The Elias Haloute & Sir Charles Williams owned 3-year-old chestnut gelding APOSTLE, trained by Andrew Nunes and confidently ridden by leading jockey Anderson Trotman made light work of the opposition when winning the 68th running of the United Insurance Barbados Derby (GR.1R. - BAR) at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday November 3, 2007, the final day of the Barbados Turf Club's Second Racing Season.

As the horses left the 2000 metre (10 furlongs) starting gate APOSTLE was the one to take the early lead followed BOUNCEBAK and KINGDORA.

Turning into the stretch for the first time APOSTLE was being pressed by BOUNCEBAK for the lead with ENZO, KATE O' CONNOR and WALK ON BY in contention.

Approaching the five furlong marker BOUNCEBAK took the lead while Chris Husbands on the Joseph brothers' filly WALK ON BY, trained by Hayden Nicholls moved into third with KATE O' CONNOR fading into fourth.

At the four furlong marker APOSTLE regained the lead as BOUNCEBAK started to loose ground. WALK ON BY was still in contention and Rico Walcott on the Naz Issa trained CHUCKTHEWOODCHUCK was at this stage beginning to make a move.

With two furlongs to go APOSTLE opened a three length lead as CHUCKTHEWOODCHUCK moved into second with WALK ON BY in third and the Edward Walcott Jnr. trained OBERON PRINCE owned by Gay Smith and ridden by Renaldo Cumberbatch getting into contention.

However, there was no stopping APOSTLE as he went on to win by two and a half lengths in convincing fashion giving trainer Andrew Nunes from Jamaica his first United Insurance Barbados Derby (GR.1R. - BAR) win. Second was The Unusual Suspects owned CHUCKTHEWOODCHUCK while WALK ON BY finished third and OBERON PRINCE fourth.

The win by APOSTLE was his second win in a Triple Crown race in 2007 as in April he won the "First Jewel" the Banks Barbados Guinaes (GR.1R. - BAR). Unfortunately he was scratched from the "Second Jewel" in the Crown the Pinnacle Feeds Midsummer Creole Classic (GR.1R. - BAR) on Saturday September 29, 2007 due to the soft track conditions.

The days secondary feature was the T.A. 'Tommy" Peirce Memorial Stakes & Trophy (Handicap) for the top class horses sprinting 1100 metres (5½ furlongs).

As expected this proved to be a very exciting race where in the end 'class' told as the Gay Smith owned pair of ZARAD and SHARP IMPACT now trained by Edward Walcott Jnr. finished first and second as they did in the 2006 running of Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup (GR.1. - INT. - BAR), only this time it was ZARAD that won.

Credit has to be given to the trainer for bringing these two horses race fit after coming off a layoff over a year.

William Clarke was the most successful trainer of the day winning three races for owners Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing while Roger Parravicino J.P. and Boston John saddled two winners each.

Chris Husbands was the only jockey to win two races on the card.

Racing continues next Saturday, which will be the start of the Third Racing Season for the year with the features being the Sagicor Life Breeders' Classic (GR.1RB. - BAR) for Barbados bred 3-year-olds and over horses and the Elliott Williams Memorial Juvenile Breeders'  Championship Stakes & Trophy (GR.1RB. - BAR) for Barbados bred 2-year-olds.
