APOSTLE GIVES NUNES, TROTMAN, HALOUTE

AND WILIAMS FIRST CLASSIC OF THE SEASON

BY CHARLIE HEATH

The first leg of the Barbados Triple Crown, the Banks Barbados Guineas (GR.1R. - BAR) was won on Easter Monday April 20, 2007 by the Elias Haloute and Sir Charles Williams owned 3-year-old chestnut gelding APOSTLE.

The race was the feature on the Barbados Turf Club's Seventh Day of the First Racing Season for 2007.

Jockey Anderson Trotman put the Andrew Nunes trained APOSTLE straight to the front from the off and because of his outstanding cruising speed none of his rivals could catch him.

Anderson Ward on the Lord Michael Taylor - Clifton Racing's owned CHARLIE BLUE, trained by William Clarke, tried his heart out but just could not match strides with APOSTLE and had to settle for second while the consistent HAWAYAN TROPIC with Rocco Bowen ran another good race to be third. ENCHANTED was fourth.

The Stewards called an enquiry into the running of the race and there was also an objection to the winner APOSTLE lodged by the connections of CHARLIE BLUE, however, it was not long before the Racecourse Stewards rightly       over-ruled the objection.

The day's secondary feature the Banks Beer Trophy Handicap for the top class horses going 1570 metres (7.8 furlongs) was very exciting with the Trinidad bred SALSA MOVES with apprentice jockey Jonathan Grant taking a ten length lead before reaching the paddock bend. KABUL and DUC D FER were in hot pursuit and by the time they reached the three furlong pole SALSA MOVES was a spent force.

That left KABUL, DUC D FER and WHO'S WAVERING to fight out the finish and in the end it was WHO'S WAVERING with Anderson Trotman that hit the wire first followed by DUC D FER with Anderson Ward giving Owners the Aysha Syndicate and trainer Elizabeth 'Liz' Deane another one-two finish in the top class.

Martiniquan female apprentice jockey Luana Lalung won her first race at the Garrison when she booted home outsider TRINITY in the day's third race and is sure to win many more races at the historic racetrack.

Anderson Trotman and apprentice Rocco Bowen both rode two winners while trainers Elizabeth 'Liz' Deane, Andrew Nunes and Naz Issa each saddled two winners.

Racing continues on Friday 20, April, with an eight race card entitled 'Salute To The Cricket Playing Nations Day'.

The feature event is the West Indies (Handicap) for BI-D2 class horses over 1100 metres (5 1/2 furlongs)
