BORDER SECRET WINS
SIR MICHAEL STOUTE
BARBADOS OAKS (GR.1RF. - BAR)
BY CHARLIE HEATH
The Sir Charles & Lady Williams owned bay filly BORDER SECRET benefiting from a beauty of a ride by jockey Anderson Trotman won the feature Sir Michael Stoute Barbados Oaks (GR.1RF. - BAR).
The Andrew Nunes trained BORDER SECRET was first out of the gates in the 2000 metres (10 furlongs) event, but was immediately taken back by Trotman who was content to let DIPITINHONEY and ZOUK contest the lead for 1800 metres (9 furlongs) of the race while he settled in fourth, moving into third before finally making his move two furlongs from home.
As the horses straightened for home with a furlong to go BORDER SECRET challenged ZOUK as DIPITIINHONEY was fading and SANTA FAYE beginning to challenge.
With 100 meters to go it was BORDER SECRET and ZOUK locked in a battle to the wire. In the end it was BORDER SECRET that got her head to the winning post first with ZOUK second and SANTA FAYE who was the back marker for most of the race third. HERE AND NOW finished fourth.
The fillies division of the Diamonds International/Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Challenge Stakes & Trophy was won by the Sir Robin Buchanan, Michael Panter and Jim Brewer owned first time starter HOT SHOT.
MISS SPITFIRE was first to leave the 1100 metre (5½ furlongs) gate followed REGAL GIRL and AQUARIUS STAR while first time starter HOT SHOT with Anderson Trotman in the saddle was slowly away.
With half of a furlong of the race run Rajpaul Rajkumar on the favourite KATE O'CONNOR lost a stirrup iron and at the same time any chance of going into the final Diamonds International/Audermars Piguet series race on Boxing Day with a chance of winning the $100,000 bonus that was being offered to the horse that won all three of its starts in the series.
However in the end Anderson Trotman got the Andrew Nunes trained HOT SHOT to recover from the slow start and go on to win. REGAL GIRL finished second, BOUNCEBAK third while MISS SPITFIRE held on for fourth.
In the colts & geldings division, the Lord Michael Taylor - Clifton Racing owned THE SUNDANCE KID with Juan Crawford in the saddle found the going to his liking and ran out a conformable winner. Second was SUPER TARASON whose stable companion SUPER STAR finished third with O-G ZAN NAGES fourth.
The ten race card, originally scheduled for Saturday December 2, 2006, was completed with jockeys Anderson Trotman, Juan Crawford and apprentices Chris Husbands and RicoWalcott each winning two races.
Trainer Elizabeth (Liz) Deane saddled the winners of three of the ten races, while William Clarke, Andrew Nunes and Victor Cheesman each saddled two winners.
