CHRIS HUSBANDS WINS THE HAROLD "SMIRKEY" BLADES MEMORIAL TROPHY

Jockey Chris Husbands was in fine form at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday July 5, 2008, the Third Day of the Barbados Turf Club's Second Racing Season.
The young rider scored four wins on the nine race card, which gave him the
Harold "Smirkey" Blades Memorial Trophy and $500.00, kindly denoted by the the family of the late "Smirkey" Blades for being the jockey of the day.
Husbands first win came in race two when he won on
COVE BAY for owner Mr. Northco and trainer Boston John. He followed that up by winning race four on GOLD DIGGER for owner Lisa Wheeler and trainer Roger Parravicino.
Husbands was back in winner’s enclosure the very next race on
WASH BROOK for owner Faraway Stables and trainer E "Clayton" Greenidge. His fourth win came in the day's final race when he won on BANDALERO for owner Sir David Seale and trainer Greenidge.
The feature
Carlyle "C.A."Jones Memorial Trophy Handicap, for the C2 - D2 (D2 maidens not eligible) going 1570 metres was won by Lord Michael Taylor - Clifton Racing's DAYLIGHT EXPRESS with Anderson Ward in the saddle. The 3-year-old brown colt led almost from start to finish and won eased up from stable companion COPY THAT with apprentice Kenny John in the saddle. Both horses are trained by Robert Peirce. Third was Gay Smith's FIRST EDITION ridden by Wesley Cave and trained by Edward Walcott Jnr., while MESSI finished fourth.
Jockey Anderson Ward rode two winners on the days card.
Trainers Haydn Nicholls and E. "Clayton" Greenidge saddled two winners each.
Racing continues next Saturday, July 12, 2008 with the feature event being the
Pinnacle Feeds Midsummer Creole Classic (GR. IR. - BAR), the "Second Jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown."
The expected maximum field of twelve is headed by dual classic winner
FRESH MILK who is the only horse with a chance to win the $100,000.00 bonus offered by the Barbados Turf Club and the race sponsors, Digicel, Pinnacle Feeds and United Insurance, to any horse winning all threes races.
