GOLDEN MOON WINS GUARDIAN
GENERAL BREEDERS' STAKES (GR.11RB. - BAR)
BY CHARLIE HEATH
A well judged ride by apprentice jockey Shane Coolymore got the Gay Smith owned and bred Golden Moon up in the last few strides to snatch victory from favourite Fresh Milk in the feature Guardian General Insurance Breeders' Stakes & Trophy, (GR.11RB.-BAR) for Barbados bred 3-year-olds over 1570 metres (7.8 furlongs), at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday January 19, 2008 the Second Day of the Barbados Turf Club's First Racing Season for 2008.
The early fractions of the race were set by Vandross, Exploding Lady and Fresh Milk, while Coolymore on the Edward Walcott Jnr. trained Golden Moon was content to sit off the pace.
With two furlongs to go Paul Leacock aboard the Boston John trained Fresh Milk opened a two length lead and it looked like she was heading for her fourth straight win but with just under a furlong to go she was joined by Golden Moon who in the end got the better of her in the last few strides. Vandross held on for third while Gudfridie finished fourth.
The Attie Joseph III and Saffie Joseph Jnr owned Walk On By, made light work of her three opponents in the inaugural running of the Guardian Life Breeders' Turf Stakes & Trophy for Barbados bred 4-year-olds run over a distance of 2000 metres (10 furlongs).
Jockey Anderson Ward put Walk On By to the front from the off and at no time did this Hayden Nicholls trained filly look like she was being pressed. She ran out an easy winner from the Equus Stables owned Hawayan Tropic ridden by Anderson Trotman and trained by Victor Cheesman. Arm Candy finished third and Charlie Blue fourth.
Jockeys Anderson Ward and apprentice Jonathan Grant rode two winners each.
Ward had actually passed the post first three times but lost the fourth race in the Stewards Room when winning on Music Lover after an objection by Juan Crawford the rider of Gold Digger who had finished fifth.
The race was awarded to first time starter The Bangor Baron ridden by Chris Husbands. Itara was upgraded to second, Hot Stuff to third and Gold Digger fourth. Music Lover was placed fifth by the Stewards.
Trainers Andrew Nunes and Robert Peirce were the only two trainers to saddle two winners each.
Another good crowd was in attendance and payments through out the day were very rewarding to punters.
Racing continues next Saturday, January 26, 2008 with the feature being the Coolmore "Home Of Champions" Stakes & Trophy (GR.1. - BAR) for A and Lower class horses.
