BTBA SPRINT STAKES AND TROPHY THRILLER
*TRAINER ELIZABETH 'LIZ' DEANE
SADDLES 400th WINNER
BY CHARLIE HEATH
Trainer Elizabeth 'Liz' Deane continues to write her name into the history books of Barbados horse racing.
On Saturday August 30, 2008 the Seventh Day of the Barbados Turf Club's Second Racing Season, Deane needed to saddle three winners to become the first female trainer to saddle 400 winners at the Garrison Savannah.
She made a good start to the day by winning the first race with BODY N SOUL with Juan Crawford in the irons for the Aysha Syndicate. She also saddled SABRIA LIGHT who finished second in that race.
Deane collected her second win in race four when Chris Husbands made it a pole to pole victory on the Sir David Seale owned impressive looking 2-year-old chestnut colt DIVINE MESSENGER, in the supporting feature race The Kabul Trophy (Condition Race) for 2-year-olds going 1100 metres (5 ½ furlongs). Once again the female trainer also saddle the second horse GREGORY'S GIRL.
Going into race eight Deane need just one more win to hit the magical 400 mark and jockey Chris Husbands did not disappoint her as he came up with a brilliant ride to get the the Sir David Seale owned PREACH TO ME to the wire first. For good measure Juan Crawford then landed race eight on the Aysha Syndicate's WHO'S CALLING to push her tally to 401 wins.
This puts Deane third in the overall standings for trainers in Barbados and needing just 12 more wins to pass the late Freddie Thirkell to move up to second. The late William 'Bill' Marshall DFC SCM saddled the most winners at the Garrison Savannah with a total of 648 winners.
The feature BTBA Sprint Stakes & Trophy (GR.111RB - BAR), for 3-year-olds and over, sprinting 1100 metres (5 ½ furlongs), was won by the Lord Micharl Taylor-Clifton Racing owned KINGDORA ridden by Anderson Ward and trained by Robert Peirce.
From the start the Andrew Nunes trained HOT SHOT with Anderson Trotman in the irons hit the lead closely followed by KINGDORA.
It was HOT SHOT that brought the field into the straight but KINGDORA who was tracking a length off started to close and when they passed the line no one could tell with the naked eye who had won.
The photo showed that KINGDORA had got home by a nose with BOUNCEBAK finishing third and AQUARIUS STAR fourth.
The jockey of the day was Anderson Ward with three wins while Chris Husbands and Juan Crawford scored two wins each.
Trainer Elizabeth 'Liz' Deane was the most successful trainer saddling four winners.
Owners Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing had three winners in DON PORTALSONNY, DAYLIGHT EXPRESS and KINGDORA.
Apprentice jockey Rico Maynard rode his first winner when winning race six on the Mr. Brain owned SALSA MOVES trained by Naz Issa.
Trainer Jonathan Simpson who recently took out a trainers license also saddled his first winner when BRAM STOKER won the finale.
Racing continues next Saturday, September 13, 2008 when the Barbados Turf Club will honour former employees who have passed away.
