Comments:
Riding tactics and rain affected ground helped 8-1 shot WASHBROOK to his fourth career win. It was a common flaw on the part of most local jockeys to canter from the gates through the first furlong of virtually every 10 furlong race, since its re-introduction in 2001. Again this un-enterprising form of riding settled the result from the instant the starter pushed his button, sending the field of seven on their journey. Not surprising then was that the only two riders who didn’t force their mounts into a little more than a common canter, would in due course finish first and second. WASHBROOK’s “tear-away” attitude on competition day perhaps also fooled the opposition into reserving themselves well off his gallop. Jockey Crawford dropped his hands early and confidently allowed his charge to settle into an even pace, stretching the field out to a single queue half-way through the distance. The colt was finally asked for an effort a few strides inside the 2-furlong pole, a point at which most of the field (except the runner-up) had already given their best effort to tap into his sizeable lead. He quickened enough to keep them at bay and came home a relatively easy winner, for a horse previously thought to be lacking in the stamina department. Top Lady continued her accomplished career with another good showing here despite an awkward start. She too was allowed to find a comfortable stride although virtually last after the first few jumps. Recovery was quick however, and she secured a good position ahead of all but the leader who was by then well clear and on his merry way. It could be deduced that as she was beaten by only 2¼ lengths in the end, she’s likely to have been even closer had the winner not been afforded a head-start of sorts in the first ½ furlong due in part to her misfortune. South Sea is normally behind early in affairs, but the lackluster pace certainly didn’t aid his chances of getting much closer. When called upon for a run, he responded well but merely ran past spent forces in the final furlong and a half to grab third place. Also a victim of the pace, Super Tarason was keen to get on with it early and although he made an encouraging move going by the 2f pole, he shortened in the straight once his turn of foot was spent trying to hack into the winner’s advantage. Both Eye Of The Tiger and Proud Bajan ran disappointing races. The former raced freely and in tandem with his stable-companion Super Tarason for a long way but as was the story in his previous start, he failed to fire. Pre-race favourite Uncle Jerry acted up quite a bit at the start and refused to be loaded, burying the hopes and expectations of his backers and connections who rightfully felt he would’ve had a legitimate shot of altering the outcome.

Comments:
The Nosferatu horse Federico, was represented by another winner when BIG FRED made virtually all of the running to score his first success. Breaking smartly from the inside berth, the chestnut easily made the lead and though pressed slightly by Millennium Mile two furlongs out, he quickened up appreciably when asked and finished quite smartly at the end of the 1100m sprint. Jockey Wesley Cave rode with the utmost confidence on the winner whose effort may suggest that he could be suited to at least an additional two furlongs; and further improvement can be expected. Inherit The Wind as usual walked into the gallop and lost precious ground at the start. Soon pushed along, and switched to the outside, he tendered a strong final bid but was beaten by the early pace and the handicap. He perhaps needs the mercy of the handicappers if he’s to win again soon, as he often finds one or two lightly-weighted horses going slightly better at the end. Millennium Mile was winner of a poor maiden last outing but found this bunch a tougher nut to crack. She broke slightly sideways and the rider briefly lost his stirrups. She was soon prominently placed just behind the leader and stuck a nose in front when pressed for more; but she laboured away from contention in the last furlong when unable to get by the winner. Maiden Moonshine veered left from the starting gate and ran close to the outside rail for 200 metres then rejoined the group going to the four. Held up for a long way, she made little impression on the leaders, and was overtaken a furlong from the money for third place.

Comments:
The field for this poor 9-furlong contest set off at a tepid pace with the winner MIDNIGHT WALTZ shadowing the leaders and under a firm hold. She circled the tiring front-runners and sealed the deal turning for home, holding off `the second and third place finishers in a workmanlike triumph. Minuet was blinkered for the first time today, and was well back off the slow early pace. She took a bad step going around the Paddock Bend and lost even more ground in the sticky conditions. Her bid started going by the four furlong pole, but lost crucial momentum when involved in a bit of bouncing that claimed the chances of Lady Patrick. She sustained her run into the straight, though again troubled by a mid-stretch conflict that possibly prevented her from getting even closer to the winner to whom she gave 20lbs. Tears Of The Sun also had a less than ideal trip but held his ground well, being caught on the line by Minuet. Victor Ludorum was favoured against this group, having run some encouraging races against better company. He led for most of the way and jockey Anderson Ward was still sitting comfortably when the heat was turned up, but the leggy bay’s lengthened stride did little to help achieve more than his final position.

Comments:
The F2 & Lower group engaged in a hotly contested handicap for the fourth race, with SUPER DANCER relishing the underfoot conditions and getting up in the dying stages for the win. The Edward Walcott-trained mare was sweating up quite a bit beforehand, but saved enough to enjoy a dream run along the rail for her second successive win. She was quickly away as usual and held a good position just aft of the leading group who blazed a trail through the first two furlongs. She accelerated in good fashion once set alight, and spurted away meaningfully from the fully wound-up group. The win again demonstrated the mare’s obvious fondness for the distance, contrary to that of her siblings. Aye Aye Capitane broke very well but was quickly shuffled back to mid-pack once the speed horses warmed up. When he finally got going only the winner was travelling better, and one could expect him to get even closer with the availability of more real estate, in the form of at least another ½ furlong. Round Table Stud’s Bold Ballad ran a huge race under a sold 129lbs. Not a very large horse (in fact quite petit) and a highly-strung individual, she ran the field ragged as best as she could in the early part yet held sufficient reserves to rally gamely to the line. It was a brave and pleasing effort by the filly and one that warrants a win on any other day. Eight-year-old Shy Boy looked like his younger self as he rocketed from the gate, but was offered another waiting ride by usual partner Kenny John. The result was hardly as successful as his last winning run, as on this occasion he failed to distance himself from the stubborn front-runner, and was subsequently worn down by the closing 1-2 finishers.

Comments:
With the withdrawal of Divine Messenger and Words Of The Wise, this handicap was robbed of major interest and worthy competition. The Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing operation scratched the latter entrant, but was still aptly represented by the improving French Envoy colt, PEACEFUL ENVOY. After taking some time to find his form, the winner has in recent times demonstrated ability consistent with a type destined to certain stakes glory except his options may be severely limited. Nonetheless the well-built three year old continued a steady upward trend with a stylish trouncing of this group, commanding the attention of misbelievers in his ability. Champion jockey Anderson Ward was undaunted by the brisk early pace, and laid in wait among the trailers for the speed to subside. With just 117lbs to shoulder he swooped remorselessly through the small field, quickening remarkably well under a mere hand-ride at the top of the stretch to win with embarrassing ease. The winning margin did no justice whatsoever to the facile nature of the win, his second in the last three showings. Runner-up Aquarius Star returned to her fancied distance but was asked to give a talented three year old weight (though only 4lbs) and that may’ve been her undoing. The lone Creole in the contest, she broke on top and handily held a good position just off the heels of the leading duo. She ardently stepped up the gallop when pressed and ran on resolutely to the line; decisively drubbing all but the winner though rallying again in deep stretch. Spicey Tiger was heavily weighted, and beaten for pace - though in touch - for the first quarter mile of the race. He was stretched a bit when the gait initially quickened then ran past beaten rivals in the stretch to finish 3¾ lengths adrift of the victor. Time D’or was coming off a big run a fortnight ago and was expected to go close being favorably handicapped. Perhaps his disappointing run could be excused in light of unsuitable going. Cash Boy was prominent along the rail for three-parts of the way, but seemed to not be going on when suffering a bad step turning for home, having been brought under pressure by the runner-up. Chelseabit roared past horses going down the back-stretch but led only briefly as she beat a hasty retreat when the heat was turned up.

Comments:
“Last two in, first two out, first two home” was the story of this handicap for West Indian Bred 3-year-olds. It was essentially a repeat performance of a month ago for the Robert Peirce-trained pair of ALL ABOARD and La Padrino, albeit this time with the former turning the tables on his stable-mate in convincing style. Breaking quickly from the number eight berth, the son of Captain Charlie flawlessly assumed command of proceedings in a few strides, thwarting the intentions of jockey Richard Lunan on La Padrino whom he overtook for the lead. The leader was kept honest in the gallop by fleet-footed Family Affair until the top of the lane, but with only insignificant threats looming he kept on well in the straight under a firm hand to score his second successive. With this win quickly following his long-awaited maiden win, ALL ABOARD now seems poised for more frequent visits to the winner’s enclosure. One and three-quarters lengths back in second place at the finish, La Padrino was again praiseworthy in his run though not afforded the rail skimming ride that was instrumental in his maiden win. He travelled kindly for his jockey early on and was switched towards the outside for his run at the leader (perhaps in search of better ground), losing vital ground in the process. One can argue that had he taken the alternative route towards the inside of ALL ABOARD, the winner would’ve surely been forced to work harder for the money. Having had her debut last race-day, Charletanne ran a much improved race to be third, having been galloping along evenly in mid-pack. She was covering the ground well in the critical stages and should be more at home with an increase in distance. St. Nicholas Bay was just off the heels of the leaders for most of the way and though provided with a let in on the rail turning for the judge he failed to capitalize. Family Affair got away from the widest gate and soon split the Robert Peirce duo early. Soon pushed along, she made her presence felt until heads were turned for home then flattened out to finish a well-beaten fifth.

Comments:
Not a high-class bunch of individuals by any means, but a satisfying win nonetheless for CLASSIC BURST, who dictated things from the start to chalk up her second win in the last three starts. The Jamaican-bred filly scampered out of the inside stall and travelled freely yet comfortably for Kenny John. She enjoyed a relatively stress-free time upfront for most of the distance until the rider finally got serious two furlongs out. She quickened noticeably and stuck to her guns when pressured from behind by the runner-up. Surreal on the other hand did not leave the gates with as much enthusiasm and was then forced to alter course to the right due to a bit of shuffling to her outside. She kept herself in touch and due to a lack of running room along the rail, was sent splitting horses 3-wide. Towards her outside was Eastern Peace who she easily got by in the stretch to secure the second spot. Eastern Peace finally earned a place in the money again, though not very convincing that he’s anywhere close to the potential he showed in earlier days. In addition to taking the final bend poorly, he momentarily shied away from the right hand whip a furlong out but by then had third place won. Why Not Dance raced towards the middle of the track and in the company of Moonstone for most of the sprint. Both held their positions well until tiring and outsprinted by the first three horses when heads were down.

Comments:
Amidst concerns of his well-being during the preceding week, AREUTALKINTOME finally settled the dispute of who’s who of the three year olds with an authoritative dominance of his field, culminating in yet another bloodless victory. More significant was that it came in this traditionally competitive first leg of the Triple Crown, The Barbados Guineas run at the most competitive distance at The Garrison. The race started off as an even rematch of last month’s Michael Parravicino Memorial Stakes but resulted with a lop-sided thrashing of the bunch by the Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained colt. AREUTALKINTOME finally answered the question of his ability to be held up and properly see out the 7.8 furlongs, by again launching an assault on the crème de la crème of three year olds with the same procession-like display he treated us to a month ago. Sent to the front from the off, the son of Zwick set a furious pace under a strong hold by young Rico Walcott, then fluently separated himself further going over the hill 3½ furlongs out. Within another furlong the contest was virtually over, as most of the field was by then properly cooked. After fractions of 24.4, 48.2, the leading three year old was still able to post a respectable final ¼ mile on a track that was slowed by around 1½ seconds by rain. Worth mentioning also is that he was not visibly labouring through the last ½ furlong today (on stickier ground), as he did in his last outing. Conceivably, one regret may be that we missed witnessing a likely stakes record had he been running on a good to firm or firm surface; and that certainly would’ve been the icing on the cake. Last year’s Champion Two Year Old Heaven Sent was clearly the best of the others and again continued consistent form at this high level. She broke smartly and tracked just behind the leader until he darted clear when questioned. She responded well to her rider’s urgings and was as game as ever though wobbling a bit under pressure in mid-stretch. In the end she failed by a hard fought two lengths to secure her second grade one win. The upcoming Fillies’ Guineas is likely her next target and on the basis of this performance she should start a heavy favorite. Show Me The Money again found himself in the show position with yet another pleasing run. The smashingly good-looking colt was much sharper today being positioned significantly closer than in previous tries and seems to have enjoyed the strong gallop. Unable to sprint when it mattered undoubtedly cost him a closer finish, however his toughness and unwavering tenacity should serve him well as the distances stretch out further. The highly fancied Don Portalsonny seemed to be the fly in the ointment on paper, having finished just behind the winner on their last encounter; but the colt never fired as expected after racing among the trailing group in the early part. He made a run past tiring foes on the final turn, but had no chance of catching the first three, finishing 7 lengths behind the winner. Janaki helped to make a race of it early but couldn’t go on when the gallop intensified from an already hot rhythm. Nonetheless, she should also have a legitimate shot at grade one glory in the upcoming Fillies’ Guineas. The other big story of the race however, was the unsettling demise of Sweet Enough. A talented filly in her own right, she was obviously robbed of whatever chance she had when campaigned against that poor group two weeks ago. Speculation around her readiness after that start was warranted and her gameness was easily drowned in the torrid pace that she helped create; cantering past the post a discouraged figure in the second-to-last place having been under visible duress from way out. The order of finish (at least regarding the first four) may suggest that the result of their last meeting was likely to be unaltered had that been a tidily run affair. There must also now be no doubt that the winner left the connections of his eleven victims perhaps hoping that the longer distance of the other Classics would be to his detriment if they’re to head him again.

Comments:
Just four of the best horses in training contested the final race, a handicap over the Gold Cup distance of 9f. Gold Cup 1-2 finishers DAYLIGHT EXPRESS and Bouncebak were joined by stable companion Pure Temptation and Preach To Me, who by virtue of the lightest weight was tipped to spoil the dominance of the Lord Michael Taylor – Clifton Racing operation here. The group set off at a pedestrian gallop, then increased slightly passing the stands for the first time. DAYLIGHT EXPRESS found himself in the middle of the track on better footing when shadowing Bouncebak for the first couple of furlongs. Jockey Ward kept him relaxed on a long loose rein poised for an explosive transformation for the last two furlongs. This didn’t quite materialize as the colt had to work harder than expected to get by the Creole Bouncebak. His win though in hand ½ furlong out was still somewhat workmanlike, but consideration should be given to the 130lbs he carried to victory. Bouncebak in her customary fashion tried to make all but was out-toughed by a better horse. 2008 Gold Cup hero Pure Temptation seems to still be a shadow of his former self but showed slight improvement with a closing third place finish. He took some time to find his best stride when asked, but ran through to the finish closing the gap on the runner-up in the process. Preach To Me was felt by many to have suffered an unfavorable ride since he was not better placed in the field. He jumped into stride ahead of all but the pace-setter, but was then allowed to lag back off an already dawdling gallop. The first sign of his situation becoming critical came when he was caught flat-footed as the other three horses amplified their rhythm going through the stretch first time around. The colt then appeared in even more serious trouble when fully extended 2½f out and making no impression on the Peirce-trained trio. His effort however, was so lackadaisical that it would probably be more encouraging to learn that he was not at his best today for whatever reason, other than to blame it squarely on the shoulders of jockey Husbands.
