Analysis:
A fairly predictable result for the opening contest as the winner MOCCA rewarded his numerous backers with a dominating performance over generally inexperienced rivals. The 3/5 favourite had only to shake off the speedy newcomer Golden Moment about two furlongs out to assure victory, and did so as impressively as most would've expected. He's a strong-looking individual, still with room for development, and seems an honest threat to the current principals of his division in future contests. Golden Moment could almost be mistaken for a miniature pony, but makes up in muscle for what she lacks in size. She has a very short, choppy action and the rain-affected ground did little in the way of helping her along. Nonetheless she travelled reasonably well from a sharp jump, though lacking an adequate change of pace down the lane to trouble the winner. Voice Mail on the other hand took sometime to figure out what was required of him, and once successfully negotiating brief traffic problems easily accounted for all but the first two in an encouraging debut. Analysis:
The second half of the Liquid Bliss (CR) produced a more exciting result with debutante PRINCESS ARIELLE holding on by a reducing 1/2 length to start her career off perfectly. She got away from the gates quickly and enjoyed an uncontested lead until digging deep to repel a late assault from the fast finishing runner-up. The daughter of Kit Fisto wasn't doing much just over a furlong out but found enough in the last panel when finally set alight up by jockey Husbands. Jihad improved considerably on his only previous outing with a closing 2nd from off the pace. The dark bay still raced green when brought under pressure to a furlong out, but kept on well enough to be wearing into the winner's advantage late. Cinci Dansatori ran a very encouraging race considering that she'd been forced off the pace by wayward rivals 3-4 furlongs out. She saved ground along the rail once free and continued willingly, though not gaining enough to significantly alter the result. [ROG]

Analysis:
Benefiting from a smart ride from jockey Ward, the Liz Deane-trained BIRD WATCH returned to winning form here when dismissing a solid field of campaigners over 7.8f. Settled off the slow early pace, the colt crept up along the inside rail over 4f out to force the pace and position himself for a strike at the lead. That move would prove to be the catalyst in this his 3rd win, as he only needed to be shaken up lightly once clearing the hill to hit the front. The chestnut stayed on well in the straight, having put the result to bed as far as a furlong out. Ring Time's run was deserving of much praise considering he'd been blocked for room when hitting his best stride three furlongs from home. The valuable ground lost came as the winner was taking charge of things up front, and conceivably cost him at least a bigger say in the outcome if not the race itself. Top Lady continued her honest efforts in this one as well, just finding her younger adversaries a bit too much to manage when affording them weight in the handicap. She briefly hindered the progress of the runner-up three furlongs out when not picking up fast enough, and only found her best toe late in affairs, getting up late for 3rd. [ROG]

Analysis:
Just three starts into his career and NED KELLY is a winner, improving on his encouraging run last time out when 2nd in a similar standard contest to Lightning Bolt. The three year old was kept prominent throughout, and the slow pace set by Soca Queen proved ineffective at thwarting his chances though looking quite workman-like in the process. Deal Or Nodeal stretched out to nine furlongs for the first time in this one, and stayed quite competitive to the end. Held up in the wake of the pace-setter for a long way, she saw out the distance well and was only just outstayed by the winner. Double Dagger continued his genuine efforts with another pleasing display, after looking to be in trouble 3-4f out. He stayed on well in the end and was gaining late on the strong one-pacing winner despite lacking room close home. [ROG]

Analysis:
There was not much form to go on in this event, which went to Richard Deane-trained TOM DOOLEY. He suffered from a bout of poor form recently (last 3 starts to be exact), but found this group to his liking. Relentlessly at one pace for the final two furlongs, the five year old was punched right out for the score and did enough to keep the fast-finishing runner-up and third place at bay. Randy Andy was traveling better than anything else two furlongs out, though constantly hanging down to the rail. That same tendency would cost him a closer finish, as he lost momentum when under pressure and having to be dragged off the heels of the winner in deep stretch. Still a good effort albeit untidy towards the end. Midnight Waltz also came from off the pace and tracked the winner into the short straight, but just couldn't quicken enough to get by, and was eased down once no further progress was apparent. [ROG]

*NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO RACE #10
Analysis:
The 80 - 105 group seldom fails to provide an exciting contest and this was hardly any different. Anyone of the twelve runners looked capable of winning on paper, and any one of five could've won with barely a furlong left. Even at the line the camera would need to separate the first two, with GRACE CHAPEL delivering another game and gutsy effort to lift the spoils. The American-bred three year old filly had been off the track since the first week in August due to injury, but returned to competition here seemingly on her best form. Though stumbling very close to the line, the dark bay regained composure and kept grinding it out to land emphatically. Spicey Tiger picked up where he left off last term by going under by the slimmest of margins after being stuck in traffic by the three furlong marker. He's a tough old fellow and though maybe approaching the end of his career, can still be quite honest. Unfortunate for him today that after getting free, he was met in the stretch by a horse that clearly enjoys a battle. Vandross was not as fierce as the first two in the final furlong, but held up well after rolling with the leaders early on. His third-place finish looked to be in jeopardy about a furlong from the money, but the gelding kept on well to secure his place on the proverbial podium. [ROG]

Analysis:
Finally an end to the unprecedented reign of the Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing/Robert Peirce clan's hold on the two year old races, and what better occasion than the prestigious W.C. Bill Marshall Memorial Championship Stakes; a race often won by the Champion 2YO but always by decent types. This year's winner may yet have much to prove for such a championship accolade, but the signs are promising as she fairly trounced top colt Rush Cutter over a distance neither of them had contested. OUTENIQUA last offering of 17/1 still seemed like fairly short odds for a filly who only had a meager effort against poorer company prior to this, but perhaps the word got out of her steady improvement and the quiet confidence in her camp. Kept right off a warm early gallop in the sticky conditions, the diminutive filly was always traveling kindly for jockey Trotman. She readily set to work once asked by the rider, and stayed on steadily inside the distance to convincingly break her maiden and pass the first stakes test. Runner-up Island Lad feared best on the day for the aforementioned stable who virtually dominating the last meeting a fortnight ago. He would be their only charge to hit the board and almost fell short having to really pick up in the last half of a furlong to do so. He's not a very big colt, but is certainly tough and takes some work by the rider to get going. It did however help the winner that he got caught in traffic three furlongs from home, delaying his slow-to-accelerate finishing kick. Grand Slam ran her heart out despite being well back in last at one stage. She did plenty get this close, and could only benefit from the experience at this level. Her dam has thrown many winners and she looks to have the potential to join her siblings in that category. Rush Cutter's short odds told the story of his fine form prior to this, though venturing beyond distances ever traveled. He handily picked up the running just over three furlongs out but failed to go on when asked to stretch. He tried desperately to hold on entering the final furlong, but became leg weary and just didn't have the deep pit of stamina needed to hold off the first three. The win however was the first Graded Stakes for OUTENIQUA's sire Thady Quill who has been desperately seeking a winner at the top level since his anticipated retirement a few years ago. It also gave the owner/trainer combination a double on the day. [ROG]

Analysis:
With 130lbs to shoulder the well fancied UNCLE JERRY dismissed returning favourite No Spin Zone and ten others for a hard fought win division "A" of this handicap. Contested over the "local mile" of 7.8 furlongs, the four year old chestnut needed to be his toughest in order to claim this sixth career win. Jockey Rico Walcott had been hard at work well over three furlongs out with little response, but the gelding kept his head down and gained the advantage late towards the outside. Two short-head and a nose separated the next four home, in what turned out to be a fairly evenly handicapped contest. Favourite No Spin Zone is as genuine as they come and ran a huge race though having not started since Gold Cup day back in March. This absence from competition undoubtedly contributed to the probable lack of fitness that likely cost her the win. Nonetheless she's definitely one to follow next time out. Johnny Sad Boy was lightest in weight of the first five home, and again provided a smart effort. He hung tough in the run up to the line, nabbed only by the shortest of heads for the runner-up spot. Batista is another hard-knocking type but has not been going through with his run when it mattered most. He again took up the running and Trotman appeared to still have plenty in hand, but the three year old was merely idling late and failed to deliver in the stretch when hard-pressed for maximum effort. Analysis:
With one exception, it appeared (and turned out to be) a very competitive handicap, as the best three year old sprinters drew swords to battle over 1100 metres. The result was a favourable one perhaps even for those who failed in their attempt to land a blow, as the winner and new darling of local racing AREUTALKINTOME virtually sauntered home to settle the outcome. He'd been allotted the high-weight, a wide draw, kept busy to stay on par with the sharp pace, and forced well of the rail throughout; all factors which caused the colt to take longer than normal to assert, but the result was hardly in doubt once they reached the furlong pole. He was quickly taken in hand by Walcott and still coasted further clear to win by a long-looking three lengths - quite an impressive warm-up for his date with older company on Boxing Day. An improved Dark Knight was the closest one to the "Champion-to-be" on this occasion, and is incidentally the first of only two horses to ever lower the colt's colours (albeit on controversial terms). He ran a creditable final quarter mile once free of trouble encountered between the 2 and 3-furlong poles, but is still at least 14lbs and three lengths inferior to the winner. Janaki was having her first start since changing to the stable of Boston John. She's always feared well in these divisional contests, and did justice to her 4/1 price just being caught close home for the runner-up spot. [ROG]

Analysis:
Impressive training feats add to the multi-faceted make-up of horseracing, and ever so often fans and enthusiasts are treated to the refined talents of the thoroughbred conditioners who get the most out of their charges. This handicap would afford us one such feat, as trainer Andrew Nunes brought the once-raced filly PRETTY IN RED in the pink of condition to score a highly impressive win over 7.8 furlongs. The flashy chestnut had been sidelined for 15 months due to injury, but returned to competition with this stellar effort to open her winning account in fine style. In her only start prior to this, the daughter of Captain Charlie had a likeable yet unfortunate second-place finish to talented three year old Don Portalsonny in her only other start, and this should augur well for her chances of some progression up the ranks. Gregory's Girl has been a disappointment in five most recent outings and is now down a bit in class. She ran a good one today having looked under pressure inside the 3-furlong marker. Irish Thunder had a very impressive debut in July, but is still in search of that elusive first win. He didn't have the best of runs here, but was gaining steadily on the runner-up in the stretch. His wait for winner's row could soon be over. [ROG]
