Comments:
On paper it looked to be a very competitive race with five of the ten runners boasting relatively fine form in their most recent showings. The competitive field included the ever-consistent Wash Brook, last start winners Lethal Leisal and Tenpins Dancer, and the solidly-backed Messi who was stretching out to what is believed to be his preferred trip. The handicap would however fall to a maiden 3 year old filly having her seventh start, and second try against open company. GRACE CHAPEL made good on this effort thanks to a brave move between horses with a furlong and a half to go, after being firmly restrained for the first 3 furlongs. She broke cleanly from the gate, but was taken back off the heat up-front behind a hard-pulling Wash Brook and Vandross (who was also quite keen to go on), a tactic that seems to work well for her. Trotman kept her towards the rail for most of the way until it was deemed essential to force her way through if she were to gamely out-finish her rivals in the manner she did. Second place finisher Vandross came into this one with a creditable fourth in the rich Tanglewood Stakes on his last outing. The leggy gelding was again competitive and added another good showing to his 18-race record.  Ridden from the gate to find a good position early in proceedings, he was poised for another score turning for home having pressed the pace for most of the way. Surprisingly, he found insufficient acceleration once off the bridle and was unable to hold off the late thrust of the winner. South Sea was again allowed to settle in behind the other eight runners, a position that usually offers him the best chance. The lightly-weighted 7-year old gelding was switched to the outside for his run when things got serious, eventually wearing down all but the first two in the rush for the line. Tenpins Dancer - the other 3 year old in the race – was having his first crack at the distance, having been displaying a running style suited to longer trips. He had the added advantage of a 7lb claim and (after racing off the rail throughout) turned for home with a chance at glory, but kept up the gallop only at one pace to finish just off the heels of the winner. Perhaps he’d find it more likeable to set his own pace even against a similar group and certainly when dropping back in company with fellow three year olds. Proud Bajan was racing for the first time since November, and ran a praiseworthy race from off the pace to finish just ahead of pre-race favorite Messi. This run under his girth could only help and he ought to deserve a good each-way wager when next seen out over the distance. The long-striding Messi looked a solid bet here on the basis of his last run behind the talented Preach To Me. As usual he lacked the pace to be positioned closer, but then failed in his 4-wide bid for the lead after a somewhat troubled run. In his customary fashion, Wash Brook held the call under a strong hold for a long way, but folded when the pressure was applied from behind.

Comments:

It was a smooth run from TIME D’OR who was winning for the third time in his last five starts (all at the distance). The strongly-made chestnut was in receipt of as much as 13lbs from the other chief contenders, and obliged in good fashion to win under a continuous drive from apprentice Kyle Carter. The son of Tour D’or broke well and was quickly dictating affairs from the front. His seven opponents were always playing “catch-up” and none could get on terms with the somewhat lazy-actioned sprinter, who held the rest at bay to win with a length and a half to spare. Most of the small group was away tidily from the starting gate except second-place finisher Mystic Moon. She was off a step slow having leapt uncharacteristically awkwardly from the 2-hole, giving her rivals a head-start that would eventually cost her at the finish. She was then allowed to settle off the pace but was found with much ground to make up once the front-runners quickened 2f out. The jockey got serious with the filly turning for home and she surged past tiring horses, just failing to peg back the winner.  Flawless last start winner Peaceful Envoy was handicapped just 2lbs below top-weighted Cash Boy, a horse who he failed to beat in their last meeting. After an unfavourable 3-wide run, Peaceful Envoy today confirmed his recent improvement by trouncing that foe, and all but the first two in the run to the line. He was kept in the middle of the track for the full distance and ran on strongly in the end after only just coming under the whip with a furlong to run. He obviously carried his assigned weight well, so a slight drop in the handicap would undeniable see him again much closer to the winner’s enclosure. Just U And Me was always well positioned tracking the leading duo but never made a serious challenge for the lead. He came under pressure earlier than expected and was outrun close home by faster finishing horses. At 7 years old he may have seen his best days but is a tough horse and could be around long enough to win again, but in poorer company. Cash Boy faintly pushed the pace and sat in hand behind the leader after 3 furlongs had been covered. His response however, was disappointing and he tired markedly to beat only two horses home. One could surmise that the recently improved gelding was always perhaps facing an uphill battle conceding so much weight to the field, and his run today can be written off.

Comments:

Following a slow and fateful start to their operation, the Opportunity Knocks racing syndicate has in recent months enjoyed popular successes with their 3-horse operation. The highlight so far has undoubtedly been the dominating win of Athena a fortnight ago, which resulted in her chance at black type with a nomination to the Fillies Guineas. Nonetheless, every win counts and equally exciting was this triumph by OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS in a less competitive handicap event. The gelding delivered a pleasing win for his multiple owners having been bet down to race favourite before the start. Benefitting from a 5lb claim and a sensible ride compliments of Kenny John, OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS courageously broke his maiden after battling the hardened Inherit The Wind for the final furlong.  Inherit the Wind was also highly fancied here against this less accomplished field. The four career wins he owns out-numbered the total number of those of the other seven runners. He was customarily snagged back to second to last early in proceedings, and was the last to be questioned when the pace quickened 2½ furlongs from the wire. The Liz Deane-trained animal again ran creditably having wrestled the lead briefly in the straight; but he faced a relentless opponent (who was in receipt of 12lbs) in the final panel of the 7.8 furlongs. Worth mentioning is that his rider Chris Husbands lost his whip at a critical stage and was unable to offer the full treatment when it was most needed. The speedy BENJAMAN shadowed the free-running pace-setter Ting A Merry Slew until she toiled with five hundred meters to run. He was covered by the two that beat him turning for home and failed in his rally to hold off their final charge. The undoing for him may’ve been his inability to have things to himself on the lead, a position he relishes. Que Pasa was always beaten for speed early and came late on the scene to finish along the rail and on the heels of Benjaman, but still 5¾ lengths adrift of the winner.

Comments:
Youthful conditioner Saffie Joseph Jnr. is the youngest trainer in Barbados, but his inexperience is far from apparent considering the impressive record he enjoys for this First Racing Season. His team of horses had prior to this race won five of their twelve starts for the year, with just one horse finishing lower than fourth on a solitary occasion. So the successful run continues, with the least accomplished (and experienced) of his small string scoring excitingly here against her eight lesser mortals. DEAL OR NODEAL darted from the gate and attempted an easy lead but was quickly covered by an even sharper Enchanted Lake who bounded to the head of the pack despite a strong hold from Crawford. Her reign lasted just over a furlong as she bolted at the “Paddock Bend” and never recovered. That left Joseph’s filly with an uncontested lead at a sensible pace and well clear of the others. Jockey Walcott on the eventual winner quickened the gallop and began to stretch the others going over the hill, and though she may’ve tired slightly in the run to the line the diminutive filly had the race “in the bag” 200 meters out. More compelling evidence of her superiority over this field is that she carried 3lbs over her allotted weight, and still convincingly beat the others for speed, some of which had claimed up to 7lbs below their handicap. Sweet Harmony was always second-best today, chasing the winner throughout having lacked a sufficient turn of foot when asked, to significantly pressure her conqueror. Third-place finisher Charleston was again lightly-weighted and continues his steady trend of improvement with back to back efforts of merit. He was slowly into stride from the off, but quickly found himself tugging against the jockey in mid-division. He then took a bit of time to find his best stride when the pace changed for the race home, but the run was genuine and he finished quickly on the outside to just miss for second spot. Batista was back in action today having been away for about eight weeks following a winning appearance back in February. He shouldered the top impost and tried valiantly to dent the advantage of the leaders but appeared a little short, and was eased down close home when fourth place was assured. That said, he looks like one to follow at the opening of next season.

Comments:
The application of more sensible tactics and a slight drop in the handicap (albeit against a better group) was proven key to 6-1 shot BRAMSTOKER’s return to the winner’s enclosure. It was long overdue amidst a couple of disappointing efforts, and the son of Janak’s emphatic win was a lopsided one for a race that was otherwise a close contest. It was a reasonably good start for all eight contenders, and the colt jumped eagerly to head early. He was forced off the headline shortly after by eventual runner-up Uncle Jerry, a move that gave him enough cover to instead relax behind horses. The Jonathan Simpson colt was shown daylight going by the 2f pole and the winner was hardly in doubt just over a furlong out. The burst of speed he displayed left the others toiling in his wake; and despite bearing toward the rail in the final furlong, he was vigorously shaken up and accelerated again to register an emphatic win. Top-weighted Uncle Jerry contributed to a swift early pace and was always prominently positioned. His response was inadequate to repel the winner, but the long-striding gelding grinded it out well enough to hold all others at bay in the all-important final furlong. With his stable in such fine form, he could continue these good showings into the next race-day once entered. Super Tarason was under a snug hold at the rear of the field for a long way and came from “the clouds” to snatch third widest of all. He was noticeably bearing inward in the stretch and lost momentum when seriously hampering the chances of Aisling who was just hitting her best stride after waiting for what seemed like an eternity for racing room. Like Super Tarason who beat him home, Ribo Tango was dropped off the pace for the first three quarters but took a different route sticking to the inside for his run. He ran on reasonably well in the end but was never a threat to the first two, though failing by a short-head to grab third.

Comments:

There was plenty to like about this stylish performance from SWEET ENOUGH, as the daughter of Janak made light work of this field after making virtually all of the running. She broke well and won as her starting price dictated coming home with the confidence of the bettors behind her. She started (and finished) the race with easily the best form in the field of ten but her win also raised some questions as to whether she can reproduce similar form in two weeks, when tested in the first Classic for three year olds. That she was even entered against this lesser group was surprising, and brings to memory a similar path taken by these connections a few years ago that resulted in the seemingly unbeatable Kabul losing his edge in the process. The upside however is that this win offers her supporters a good leg to stand on considering that she’s likely to be the only winner at a distance further than 7.8f, to campaign in the upcoming classic races. That along with the fact that this same filly scored her only stakes win thus far, just 7 days after demolishing a poorer group in testing ground as a two year old, augurs favourably for her chances. Orion was kept much closer to the pace than in previous races and while receiving 9lbs from the winner, had every chance of but fell short in this attempt to break his maiden. Perfect Timing was also prominent with the slow pace, and ran well until fading badly in the last 100 meters, when overtaken by Orion and a closing Positive. Recent debutante Fire Hill galloped along in hand until clearing the rising ground, made a good move approaching the final turn, but was then heavily eased when left with no room a furlong from the finish. All in all it was a truly run race and a decisive win for SWEET ENOUGH.

Comments:

Finally the win has come. After numerous near misses ALL ABOARD has at last graduated to the status of “winner”, following a flawless display of speed from the gate. Jumping from the 9-gate, he fluently spurted from the boxes and assumed authority in-spite of an equally rapid break from Ratatat; the only spoiler to his full dominance of the race. After the 2f pole no one would get close to the first two finishers, who would ultimately seemed to be in a separate race when the duel intensified. Their acceleration when pressed swiftly settled the outcome (at least regarding the first two finishers) with ALL ABOARD obliging close home for a decisive score. His triumph was even more satisfying since he conceded weight to all, carrying 130lbs in just under 1 minute for the 1000 meters (on a track that was approximately 1 sec slow). This in mind, the gelding could be poised for more success in the near future. Ratatat made an eye-catching move and shot to the lead turning for home, but was unable to quicken again when the winner shook loose admirably in the last furlong. A long-looking 7¾ lengths behind Ratatat was his stable companion Moonshine, who (much to her credit) carried 8lbs overweight and still finished in the first three. Her form to date has been dreadful; however her last two starts may suggest that she could make her presence felt in lesser company. Ratatat on the other hand is bound to go on to better things in light of this run. Having his first appearance since July of last year (and third start ever), this was a run of good promise for the powerfully-built chestnut and he can only benefit from the experience. Surely the first two will eventually meet again on more even terms.

Comments:

Another small field of “A” class horses brought the curtain down on the day’s proceedings, this time four contested a handicap over the popular 1100 meters distance. Dethroned “Sprint King” Kingdora and 3 year old upstart Divine Messenger featured in the betting over Spa Sprint fourth WHO’S TO SAY and another good three year old Words Of The Wise. Kingdora under 133lbs was dropping back to his preferred distance, but just couldn’t derail WHO’S TO SAY with whom he disputed the lead for the first 2 furlongs. The winner clearly needed every bit of the 7lb claim he received via apprentice Bishop, as he just held off a determined duo for the cheeky score. Beaten for speed from the gate, Words Of The Wise was unhurried behind the small field until the gallop intensified. He was behind horses and under pressure to get on terms soon he was angled towards the outside for a run, but then switched back towards the rail turning for home. In retrospect, failing to save enough ground between the three and two furlong poles may have cost him 2nd place, considering his laudable effort in final furlong. Divine Messenger’s disappointing run left many unanswered questions. He was coming off a colossal run in the Spa Sprint, carrying the same weight as on that day, with a much better draw, yet failed to make his presence felt at any point. Though not badly beaten in the end by his elders, he was clearly a far cry today from the dazzling colt we were treated to a few months ago. That was perhaps compounded by the slow run through the first quarter, as he seems to enjoy a hot pace upfront. WHO’S TO SAY’s final time was still quite good considering the dawdling first two furlongs, and rest assured his camp will seek another sprint for him soon.
