Analysis:

This was by no means a competitive event with the eventual scratching of six runners (a couple of which resulted from the less than ideal racing surface) reducing the field to just four juveniles. Consequently, the result did little to assist in gauging the form of the winner SPELLBOUND, who trotted up in the 1100 metres event. She was quickly away but opted to relax a bit and track the filly Fedrica for the first two furlongs or so. Though she’d probably prefer firmer underfoot conditions, the attractive chestnut still put her rivals away with the minimum of fuss once asked to stretch by jockey Richard Lunan, and won easing down. She’s now won two of her three starts date, and still looks in fine fettle as connections look forward to a crack at the more valuable races ahead. Fedrica looked to have physically progressed when seen in the preliminaries, and was expected to be the only one to tackle the winner. She led easily from the gate, but came under pressure to find more 400 metres out and weakened in the testing ground. Savannah Sun was always in the rear with attractive newcomer Up The Ante who never made any impression and obviously needs more time to come on.  [ROG]

Analysis:

The imported two year olds were up next to tackle the now very soft conditions, no doubt worsened by the four runners in the previous event. The surface as expected turned out to be a disaster for most, and the unsafe ground claimed surprisingly just one faller in the Sir David Seale-owned Reward Me. Slammin N’ Jammin also stumbled badly when blazing a trail up front, and her rider did well to stay aboard though losing both stirrups in the process. It was generally an ugly affair, but the winner PURR CLASS came out the best, having raced in the slightly better ground towards the middle of the course. She’s not a big, “scopey” filly, but won in good style, and her precocious demeanor suggests that she could be force to reckon with early on in these events. Indanger who started favourite as a result of encouraging reports from morning workouts, disputed the lead before being collared by the winner turning for home. He has some room for improvement and may be more effective on a better track. Both Mingun Temple and Cool Asa Breeze were badly outpaced throughout, but the former is a well-bred, attractive bay who looks like one to progress into a decent horse with time. Dany Dany was quickest away but seemed to be always struggling in the going. A decision taken to abandon the remaining races in the interest of safety was unfortunate but necessary, as the track was unmistakably the worst seen this year so far. Not encouraging either is the fact that the hurricane season is now upon us, and this doesn’t allow much hope for good racing conditions on a track that already needs desperate upgrading.  [ROG]

Analysis:

The Roger Parravicino-trained four year old GIN FOR ME put up a brave effort in this one to claim her fourth lifetime win and second consecutive. Kept close to the early pace, the daughter of Janak was always racing handily, and willingly seized the advantage 3 furlongs out. She was provided with a serious challenge from the surprising runner-up Van Helsing inside the final furlong, but had enough left close home to hold that gelding at bay. Van Helsing has had four dismal showings in his starts prior to this one, and consequently had the support of few who were expecting such a big run. He’s done his best work over the sprint distances, but still found the pace of this group to his liking, finishing well on the outside to press the winner up to the wire. Johnny Sad Boy ran a huge race for third considering he’s been off from competition since March, giving way grudgingly in deep stretch after disputing the lead for the first ¾ mile. Turbulent Guy won his last two before this one, but a 5-wide bid put paid to his chances two and a half furlongs out.  Obviously still in good form, an ease in the going should again see him in higher in the order. Analysis:

Five year old bay mare KANON continued good service to her owners with back to back wins over her fancied trip of 7.8 furlongs. Settled as usual among the back-markers early, the Boston John trainee called on a good turn of foot once clear of the hill and swooped menacingly down on the leaders. She was steered to the outside of the headliners a furlong and a half out, and was engaged in a stretch-long battle with a stubborn Batista for the final panel. Batista could still stand proud in defeat following this gutsy effort, and could be the winner on another day. He was held up in mid-division, and was always travelling comfortably for jockey Trotman, in particular when cruising to the heels of the leaders just over two furlongs out. The leggy colt seized the advantage once shaken up but appeared to be not going on and was even twitching his ears, perhaps indicative of him missing the company. He picked up again nicely when joined at the top of the stretch by the winner but was bearing out badly, and though brave, went under by a short-head. Classic Burst raced to track the pace-setter early, but found herself with little room to go on when asked for a serious effort three furlongs from the judge. She saw plenty daylight a furlong out when the first two drifted towards the outside rail, but was unable to quicken again and capitalize on the opportunity. Uneverno and Houdini both raced in the rear and well off the early pace. The former was switched from the rail to the outside for a run, and though finishing well, was always unlikely to catch those upfront. Houdini was already under the stick at the halfway stage, and looked to be in trouble at that point. He kept on surprisingly well towards the inside rail and should be even closer next time out, as he continues the search for his best form after an 8-month layoff.  [ROG]

Analysis:

Speculation of chinks in the armour of leading sprinter KINGDORA were emphatically discredited when the brown gelding decisively dismissed a small group of his fellow creoles in this renewal of the Grade 3 BTBA Sprint. He was not the fastest away today (that credit went to Super Star), but quickly asserted his authority and led the small bunch through fairly sharp splits. Once urged to quicken up by jockey Juan Crawford just under two furlongs out, he subsequently repelled an all-out effort by Super Star turning for home, and went on to record a relatively easy win, his first for quite some time. Bouncebak did as her name suggests following a poor showing at last asking. She was slightly outpaced for the first quarter mile, but held a clear third spot going by the two with just the two pacemakers up ahead to catch. She was full of run once straightening up for the line, and closed admirably on the leader before the line came too soon. Further credit to her effort was that she gave the winner 5lbs, something that would’ve always made it difficult to reverse the final placings, and to run him to a length and a quarter still deserves worthy mention. Super Star seemed to be just a notch below these sprinters today, as he had every chance of being more involved in the finish but came up short. He was under pressure when dismissed by the winner a furlong out, then lost the runner-up spot in mid-stretch to a faster finishing Bouncebak. The other two, Dark Knight and Vandross always raced in the rear and were obviously outclassed having not made an impression at any point.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Finally a satisfying result for the connections of DOUBLE DAGGER, who’ve been enduring a spate of second-best efforts from the colt. The big, rangy bay pushed the pacesetter and saved ground along the rail throughout, then proceeded to make light work of the average-looking opposition. He was also waited with a bit longer than in previous times, and readily claimed the lead once the pace-setter began his retreat. The colt went on to crushed his rivals easily and was kept busy by the jockey who was probably making sure the colt was not going to claim just a piece this time, but take the entire cake. Soul Rebel was off the track since December last year, and ran quite a pleasing race to be second. He raced just behind the leading group and made some headway when pressed a little under than two furlongs out. By then the winner was well on his way, but the chestnut kept on strongly until eased near the line when second place was assured. Lightning Bolt somewhat underscored his trainer’s ability to get big debut efforts, or similar following lengthy lay-offs. The previously unraced son of Thady Quill was allowed to race quite a way off the pace and was second to last four furlongs out. He then commenced and maintained a steady run towards the outside of horses, but was given too much to do to get any closer. Quality Time ran a decent race to be fourth, after racing in tandem with the winner for most of the way. She fell short when not quickening enough as the heat was turned up, and then gave way to faster finishing horses in the final quarter mile.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Being placed high in the handicap at 129lbs, and breaking from the unfavourable outside berth were clearly insufficient obstacles to the dominating win by HEZBOLLAH in this handicap sprint. After campaigning at the longer trips with little fanfare, the son of Ibn Diesis regained confidence with a good-looking win over his twelve rivals. It was by no means a bunch worth bragging on, but the manner of the win deserves some credit and confirms his liking for the distance as he made virtually all the running to score well. Tom Dooley had a recent 2nd place effort at the distance and replicated that result. The chestnut came under a hard ride just over three furlongs out and soon made some headway, but then one-paced in his usual fashion and held on for second. Moonshine seems to be developing a good relationship with new partner Juan Crawford. She’s been a huge disappoint until lately when finally nabbing the smaller ends of the purse on a few occasions. Today’s run was much like those, and she continues to find it hard to finally break her maiden. Her stable companion Moonstone shares some of her disappointing fortunes, as he’s been unable to show any respectable form in his previous four starts. The addition of cheek-pieces may’ve perhaps put him in the money on this occasion, but his effort still looks nothing like the one that placed him in winner’s row before.   [ROG]

Analysis:

After an unsuccessful campaign against her counterparts in the three year old Classics, SWEET ENOUGH emphatically passed her first test in open company with this stylish win over 1100 metres. For the light-framed daughter of Janak to still be in such fine fettle just weeks after being stretched over the longer trips is remarkable, let alone stare these hard-nose foes in the eye then conquer them on fairly even terms. She travelled kindly for Crawford throughout, and found plenty when switched towards the outside turning for home. The in-form and talented sprinter Ratatat was one to feel the wrath of the winner after blazing his usual trail up front for the first four furlongs. He kept on gamely though under pressure well inside the final furlong, but the winner was too good on this occasion. This was a commendable run from Canduit Tuya in her second start since returning from a 5-month break due to injury. She broke smartly but quickly conceded to the speedier types and raced in mid-pack. Saving ground all the time, the American-bred filly raced with her head high but was wearing into the advantage of the runner-up late. Cash Boy disputed the lead with Ratatat but could not go on when asked to do so by jockey Husbands. He ran on well-enough in the straight but was perhaps anchored by the top weight, and never found the extra gear needed to go with the ones ahead.  [ROG]

Analysis:

Yet another exciting handicap with HAWAYAN TROPIC delivering a smart-looking performance to defeat a strong-looking field over a mile and a quarter. Her poor habit of breaking slowly is well publicized, and today she didn’t disappoint all who expected the same. That she would recover from it to beat this bunch in such fine style is what wasn’t expected. She’d given the group an uneasy head-start (perhaps ten lengths from the leader) but soon caught up with the group and raced in hand albeit still at the back. Still unhurried she soon found herself in mid-pack and going among the best in the race. Her change of pace once asked was significant and very effective in sealing the outcome, as she had it won at least a furlong out. Proud Bajan was filling the runner-up spot for the second time in as many starts. Like the winner he was at the back early, and conceded first run to that horse. Not normal one to find extra, the lanky gelding again accelerated on the inside in the final 100 metres, but the winner had already been decided. Top Lady got into the hunt at the same time as the winner, but was unlucky when that horse took her ground en-route to pick up the running. She ran on as gamely as ever, but perhaps losing that step at such a critical point may’ve allowed the runner-up to claim her likely spot. Bramstoker was always prominently placed in the order and led briefly going by the two. He turned for home still in with a chance but probably didn’t see out the full distance in the end.  [ROG]
