Analysis:
A fairly average-looking maiden contest in which no one was able to offer a serious test to the winner AMANYARA in the final half of the 1100-metres event. The Naz Issa-trained chestnut was slowly away from the inside gate but had quickly raced into a prominent position after a furlong or so had been covered. She willingly struck the front four furlongs and came home much the best having been lightly pressed just enough to keep her busy a furlong out. The filly looked to have improved physically on her debut appearance a month ago, and the addition of blinkers helped to confirm this fact, as she won in good style. Pre-race favorite Island Lad was also sporting the head-gear for the first time, and it did sharpen him enough to be closer than normal; but always pushed along to keep up he failed to quicken and kept on at one pace under a heavy hand behind the winner. It could be seen as a disappointing run from the colt who was down 7lbs in the weights after running an encouraging race last time out. Nonetheless, to his credit he was good enough for the runner-up spot in spite of beliefs that he may be more at home over a further furlong or two. Habibti who shares the same sire as the winner, was quickest into stride and showed decent pace early on before weakening when things got serious, eventually finishing well-adrift of the first two. Newcomer Firey Dreams is sure to benefit from the experience of this effort, and is another who may relish more ground as times goes on. She too was niggled along to keep pace just off the leaders, but failed to increase when ridden three furlongs out. The form of the principles in this event still seems slightly behind that of the two current leading two year olds (Rush Cutter and Mesmerize), however these are early days yet and the future appears exciting as we look ahead to the more valuable juvenile contests later in the year. Analysis:
American-bred three year old BIRD WATCH made it two consecutive strikes with an impressive romp in this 10-furlong handicap for three year olds and over. Carrying the high-weight of 130lbs he made light work of the opposition to score decisively and in a manner of a very useful horse. It was hardly a strong pace early on, and the colt disputed the lead before being shuffled back to be ahead of just one going to the four. The Liz-Deane trained animal again found an exciting change of pace along the inside rail, and assured the result within a few strides a furlong and a half from home. He obviously enjoyed the journey on this reappearance and again won going away in the end. Runner-up Proud Bajan was prominent in the running thanks to the dawdling early gallop, and stayed on well in the straight to better pace-setter Uncle Jerry for second money. He was poised for a strike at the lead two furlongs from the money, but as expected lacked the turn of foot to go with the eventual runaway winner. Uncle Jerry was also high in the handicap and ran creditably until weakening, giving way to the first two home when under pressure for more effort a furlong out. Three year old creole Queendora was having just her fifth start and was shaping to be an honest little filly. She ran her heart out again today to finish fourth after sitting just off the pace, but tragedy struck when she sadly broke bones in both front legs when pulling up and had to be euthanized. [ROG]

Analysis:
Though running greenly throughout, debutante KING OF THE JUNGLE responded fiercely to vigorous urgings from the rider, and dismissed his rivals with an authoritative win in this maiden field. He was pushed along early to take up a forward position and along the rail, and was always within striking distance of the lead. Only runner-up Double Dagger offered anything of a serious objection once the winner was asked to stretch three furlongs out, but his one-paced effort was inadequate to peg back the hard-ridden Edward Walcott-trained colt. Double Dagger continues to knock at the door with worthy efforts such as this one, but is still desperately seeking his maiden win. Indeed his day is not far off, but the frustration of him so often finding something going better than he, must be setting in. He had a reasonably good trip except for an awkward-looking start, but found the winner’s burst of speed two furlongs out a bit more than he could handle. Victor Ludorum has run some decent races earlier on, but recently added a series of disappointing showings to his name. Though well-beaten on this occasion, he was equally clear of those behind him, suggesting that a win could be still on the cards for him in a poorer maiden. Quality Time was having just her second start since a mediocre introduction back in May. She was outpaced and among the back-markers early in affairs, and accounted for beaten horses in the latter stages for fourth money. On the other hand it was an exciting triumph for the winner who should improve from this run, a pleasing thought as he joins his paternal sibling Lion King as another winner for their highly-touted North American-based sire. Analysis:
Five year old American-bred gelding WHY NOT DANCE didn’t benefit from a dream trip, but got the job done to score his second life-time win from 22 tries. Sent off at 15-1, the Liz Deane-trained animal overcame a wide draw and a lack of running room just over a furlong out to win under a relatively passive drive. He was a close third last time out to the talented Ratatat, and was therefore expected to follow up that good effort with another here; and though not a stellar field, this win is as good as any considering the problems he’s been reported to have. Deal Or Nodeal has been off her best form in recent starts finishing off the board in her last three outings. She returned here with a more appropriate display, being worn down just inside the final furlong by the winner to whom she gave 10lbs. Also receiving weight from her was Inherit The Wind who, like the winner, also hails from the Liz Deane stable. He was quickly relegated off the early gallop and raced along in last for a long way until being switched outside for a run. He did well to grab third considering that he was still among the back markers even with a furlong and a bit to run. The other four home were virtually heads apart at the line with Easter Peace gaining the advantage for fourth money after racing wide for most of the way. [ROG]

Analysis:
With no real threats in the line-up, Gold Cup winner DAYLIGHT EXPRESS ran out another embarrassingly easy winner against the top rated bunch over 7.8 furlongs. After pressing the hot pace set by one-time nemesis Apostle, the American-bred son of Seeking Daylight effortlessly assumed command of affairs going over the hill, and was never challenged. The opposition offered little resistance to his dominating performance, and further credit to his effort is that he carried the high-weight of 130lbs, and was heavily eased while equaling the track record for the distance. He’s no doubt a class act, and connections are reported to be considering a trip up north to Woodbine for the valuable Woodbine Mile next month. Certainly a race of that caliber is sure to truly test the colt who’s been on the top of his form since January. Stable companion Pure Temptation has also been in reasonably good form and looks set to represent his stable well in the absence of the winner over the next few months. Preach To Me has shown that he can handle himself in these ranks, but will need to be more consistent with top notch efforts to finally win against the best. He was surprisingly rank early, and on a pace that obviously took something away from his deadly turn of foot when it mattered most. With Apostle still not back to his best, it appears that only Preach To Me or Bouncebak should pose immediate threats to him continuing the strangle-hold his stable has in these events. Perhaps the result of the Derby, the return to training of last year’s heroine Fresh Milk, and a desperately needed return to form for Apostle could significantly alter the picture and offer some hope of competitive racing in this group. Analysis:
Following a disappointing effort last try, diminutive three year old filly FIRE HILL credited her sire with another winner when she broke her maiden in gutsy fashion in this below par handicap. She raced in mid-division just off the leaders until quickening her gait readily three furlongs out to pursue the eventual runner-up Benjaman, who’d by then separated himself by some six lengths. In the run up to the line she kept on courageously along the rail to get up close home for an exciting score. Benjaman had set a reasonable pace early on and in his usual style attempted to slip the field when asked to stretch once clearing the hill. The gelding took undesirably long to change leads in the stretch and was by then worn down by the winner. Midnight Waltz maintained a steady run from way out of it to catch the on-pacing Tom Dooley, who was among the pacesetters, for third money. Not a high quality race but the winner looks like she can win more races among this group even with a slight jump in the handicap. [ROG]

Analysis:
Finally a contest that will answer all the questions surrounding the brilliance of AREUTALKINTOME, and his place in history as one of the most talented three year olds ever seen on local soil. The son of Zwick duly justified the support of his backers in the 70th United Barbados Derby and in the process sealed the Triple Crown series, as well as divisional championship honours. After sweeping aside all in the first two legs over shorter trips, the athletic colt got his well-deserved moment in time with another impressive triumph, though not as straightforward as previous trials. He was finally tested by a big effort from Show Me The Money when entering the unchartered waters of the tenth furlong, but the Joseph trainee after settling much kinder for jockey Walcott, dug in like a worthy champion to settle the outcome deep in the final furlong. To give credit to the runner-up’s effort, it is not unreasonable to think that Show Me The Money would’ve gone even closer or surely won, had his rider not opted for the inside lane turning for home. It was still a worthwhile effort to note, especially when you consider how difficult he was to rate when the pace slowed by the Paddock Bend. Surely most are anxious to see if he will replicate this form next time out. Don Portalsonny again hit the board, but was quite disappointing on a day when it mattered most for him to find winning form. He was kept way off the early heat up front (he had only one horse beaten after two furlongs had been covered), a tactic that perhaps drowned any chance he had of upsetting the raging hot favourite. After making up considerable ground halfway through the distance, he then accounted for only beaten horses inside the final two panels, as the first two were virtually “home and dry”. Lion King was outpaced and among the back markers early, and gave the principles a sizeable head-start going into the final three furlongs. He responded well in the straight but was too far off the first two to make any impression. The winner may not be genuine at the trip but his class saw him through well, and his impressive run continues as he’s now recorded six wins in a row, and pushed his bank roll to well over $200,000. Kudos as well to young trainer Saffie Joseph Jnr. on his first Derby win, and he can also now be recognized as the youngest conditioner to not only to taste such glory, but that of the entire triple-race series. Jockey Rico Walcott also deserves credit for his handling of the colt through the campaign, and his partnership with the colt also guaranteed him a first Triple Crown. Another interesting fact to note is that the two most recent local Triple Crown winners were both sired by stallions who struggle to gain the respect and support of breeders, and it’s interesting to see how his services are utilized in the coming season. The one spoiler though, was the demise of Trilok who after racing keenly among the leading group, suffered a similar injury as Queendora in the 2nd race and was also humanely destroyed. The obvious deteriorating condition of the racing surface was not surprisingly thought to be the catalyst in both incidents, and it’s unfortunate that their “sacrifice” came before the powers that be can take note. Analysis:
The handicappers would’ve been delighted with the result of this contest as no more than two and a half lengths separated the first eight horses home, with the winner SPICEY TIGER reversing his recent lackluster efforts with a gutsy triumph against a tough field. Saving ground along the inside rail throughout, the five year old son of Tiger Ridge kept on well inside the final furlong once afforded an opening on the turn for the judge. Three year old Words Of The Wise was pushed into contention early but quickly gave way to the pacesetting Walk On By within a furlong or so. He remained prominent and eventually held the call when the chips were down, but gave way grudgingly in the run to the line, just holding off an onslaught of challengers for second money. Ring Time seldom runs a bad race, and his usual unhurried style of running early in a race afforded the field a head-start much too large for him to overcome with the unanticipated traffic problems he subsequently experienced. A win could be on the cards for him very soon again, and as such he’s one to follow next time out. Bloumberg ran a fairly respectable race except for noticeably hindering the chances of Grace Chapel on two occasions. He too can have a bigger say next time out though only running on at one pace in deep stretch. Tiga Lily was all out to catch the leaders after racing kindly in mid-division, while Walk On By failed to quicken enough when coming under pressure two furlongs out. [ROG]
