Analysis:

It was only the third try for the juveniles over 7.8f, and a full field lined up to prep for the highly anticipated longer races next season. One of these and a hopeful contender for the Classics LEAVE IT TO ME, was having just her second outing since the debut on September 5th and looked at least a decent type in the making. She'd been nursing some minor problems since that start, but returned a ready winner and looks set for a reasonable crack at at some bigger prizes next season. The track was evidently much softer than the "good to firm" reported, but the full sister to a pair of major stakes winners still found plenty in the final panel to get up virtually on the line for the score.  Runner-up Captain Sully held the call right up until the death having led "on the muscle" through fairly steady fractions. He quickened appreciably entering the straight, but found the winner's turn of foot a bit much to repel. Have No Fear who hails from the same team as the winner, was in receipt of much weight in the handicap and though having an improved run here, still looks a notch below this group.   [ROG]

Analysis: At last another win for three year old SHOW ME THE MONEY, who'd been unsuccessful in claiming a victory since his maiden win early in the year. Since a career-best effort in the Derby, the colt had been somewhat disappointing in three starts since then, with this his first victory against the better three year olds coming not a moment too soon. Teaming up with jockey Anderson Ward again proved to be the catalyst, as he was afforded another enterprising ride from the front to secure the triumph. The form doesn't look substantially solid considering he'd be lining up against the top rated horses in two weeks, but it's a win nonetheless and hopes are still high. Pretty In Red showed that her form last time out when trouncing a poor bunch was no fluke with a big effort behind the winner today. That she was just 3lbs below her conqueror (equivalent to a sex allowance in Classic races) and considering she was fairly evenly-placed in the weights suggests that she may've been a force to reckon with in the just completed Classics. She's still eligible for some decent races early next year, and the connections will certainly be looking forward to boosting her value provided she stays sound. On form Don Portalsonny was easily the horse to beat, but a recent hike in his handicap rating due to a solid short-head second to Bouncebak saw him in here with an anchor of 130lbs. He wasn't disgraced by any means and could readily turn the tables on all in here any other day once the weights shift more in his favour.   [ROG]

Analysis: Another gutsy effort from the Jamaican-bred filly CLASSIC BURST who was registering her fourth win from twelve starts for the year. She's an honest little filly who can be quite game once allowed her own way up front early on, as shown again today. Sent to the front from the off, she always traveled kindly for apprentice Carter and followed up a creditable 4th last time out, with this stylish win. Runner-up Aisling was blinkered for the second time today, and the equipment adjustment seems to have had a positive effect on her performance. This was her best effort for quite some-time and she looks likely to continue in this vein for her new connections. Midnight Waltz continued here with another hard-knocking effort for her connections, and could lift a similar contest sometime soon once she remains down in the handicap.   [ROG]

Analysis: With two races down and one to go, spirits in the Lord Michael Taylor camp are high with anticipation at RUSH CUTTER's chance of becoming the first Diamonds Int'l $100,000 Bonus winner. The bay colt reaffirmed his position as the dominator of his division with another dazzling display in the 2nd leg for colts over 1100m. With this one now securely under his girth, the two year old son of Wertz will now have to tackle the 7.8f and his three conquerors in the Bill Marshall Stakes when the group lines up for the Boxing Day finale. The Robert Peirce-trained animal seemingly has the Champion Two Year Old crown at his mercy, but an additional $100,000 and his ability to handle a distance of ground are again on the line when the bugle blows on December 26th. True to form, Mocca was next in line home after leading for a furlong from the gate. He has improved a bit since last outing, but will have to step it up even more to trouble the principles of his generation next year. Jihad got away much better from the gates today, and was kept more in touch throughout. He too finished where his form suggested, even though it was felt that the colt didn't appreciate being hustled too early.   [ROG]

Analysis: The Scotty's Amateur Race was met as expected with much excitement by the fans, who thoroughly enjoy similar out-of-the-ordinary events. The scene was still nowhere near as thrilling as that of the Veteran's Jockey Day but the event was encouraging enough to be called for on a seasonal basis by fans. The winner on this occasion SUPER JEBS was a useful sprinter in his day and had earned the most wins and prize money in the full field. He responded well when asked to quicken by the rider and kept on well once hitting the front a furlong out. Stag Hunter wore the colours of the powerful Lord Michael Taylor stable during his racing career and retired as the highest classified of the bunch. He was always well positioned and made steady headway between horses a furlong out despite not getting the help from the saddle he needed to get up. Ism and Schism had even less help from his rider as he lost both stirrups early in the contest and could only hold on for balance. The gelding was still quite willing in the final furlong and did well to be third considering it was all on his own. Hopefully the Club organisers will acknowledge the plea of fans and offer similar entertaining events more often to enhance the racing experience for its supporters.   [ROG]

Analysis: It was just her third lifetime start, but the Victor Cheeseman-trained CINCI DANSATORI emphatically overcame the odds and delivered an impressive performance to break her maiden in the distaff division of the DIAP Youth Female Stakes. The daughter of Southern Glory aggressively forced the pace under a handy apprentice Samuel, before stepping it up a notch once clearing the hill halfway through. She looked to have it won two furlongs out, but decisively put the result to bed inside the final panel when quickening again for the rider. She showed vast improvement to win as she did here (running to mark much higher than the 56 she came in at), and looks an exciting prospect with the scope for further successes in good company. Habibti had been handily tracking the pace until given her head a full three furlongs from home. She did make some headway a quarter mile from home, but came under pressure late to pick up further on the winner. Waltzin' ran a much improved race to be third after having just one beaten after a furlong had been run. She's obviously a filly with some ability and could win a maiden early next season if placed appropriately. Raging hot favourite Spellbound failed to fire today and won't join her stablemate Rush Cutter as a double winner in the DIAP series. She never looked the part as in previous outings, and the result showed her to be way short of her best on this occasion. The win though, represented a number of firsts as it was not only the horse's first win, but she's now her sire's first winner (and stakes winner); the jockey's first stakes win; as well as the first win/stakes win for the owner and breeder.   [ROG]

Analysis: Nice to see the Boston John-trained ATHENA finally score for her new connections after showing some promise in recent times. This win further emphasizes her preference for the sprint distances despite a close 3rd three starts prior to this. Trapped for room just inside the two furlong marker, the daughter of Ibn Diesis only needed to be shown daylight once turning for home, and apart from a renewed challenge from the runner-up, kept on steadily along the rail to settled the outcome. Johnny Sad Boy seldom fails to earn a cheque for his barn, and ran well up to his mark of 56. It's not unreasonable however to think that he would've claimed this as his second victory had a decent five or seven pound claimer been given the mount. Storm Warning was a good winner last time out, and though beaten on this occasion didn't disappoint in her effort. She kept on well in the straight despite being short of pace for the final furlong when the heat was on. Still the five year old mare continues to please her backers more often than not when sent out.  [ROG]

DECEMBER 26, 2009 (BOXING DAY)

Analysis: Apprentice Jalon Samuel notched up yet another win on the day, and graduated to the ranks of 5lb-claimer with a well-timed effort on the Saffie Joseph Jnr.-trained UNCLE JERRY. The youngster has been in stunning form recently both in Trinidad and at home, and was all out to guide the winner to his sixth career win and consecutive wins in three weeks. Chasing the winner home was the American-bred three year old Tenpins Dancer, who was returning from a well-needed 3-month competition break. To carry top weight, concede 18lbs to the winner and run him to 1/2 length suggests the rest was most beneficial and the colt could be poised for bigger things in the months ahead. Bramstoker was impressive two starts ago when slamming a similar group over the identical trip. He flopped miserably last time out, but regained much integrity with this run today; ever-consistent, he should hardly be over-looked next time out.   [ROG]

Analysis: Finally another win for the Liz Deane-trained INHERIT THE WIND after numerous trials at various distances since his last success back in February of 2009. He almost always finds something going better than he is in the end,  and as a result went under in a number of close calls. Fairly evenly-placed in the handicap (unlike most other times when high in the weights), the now seven year old also found the lesser competition to his liking and got up close home to deny the fast finishing runner-up. A change in tactics almost paid handsomely for Shy Boy who had also been struggling to find another win for some time. Apprentice Samuel kept the gelding just off the heat up front, then got plenty from the eight year old when saving precious ground along the rail. However, not getting a clear run at the furlong pole may've cost him a seventh career win. Who's Calling made up lots of ground from being around eight lengths behind the leader around three furlongs out. She was just ahead of the winner two furlongs from home but lost that advantage when steered widest into the stretch, and tendering a respectable final furlong bid.   [ROG]
