Analysis: Following up the potential she showed in her first start five weeks ago, the Blast Of Storm juvenile TERENTIA gave a fairly stylish effort to break her maiden over 1100m. She was always travelling kindly for Ward and quickened readily, settling the outcome handsomely as much as a furlong out. Most Wanted had things her own way upfront from the gates, but failed to go on when pressured over a furlong out. Cassanova was blinkered for the first time today, and again found himself in the money running a marginally improved race despite well-beaten by the winner. [ROG]

Analysis: In division "B" of the opener, the Robert Peirce-trained CAPTAIN SULLY ran out an impressive winner to finally justify the confidence placed in him by his connections. He's rumoured to be one of the stable's best charges for the Classics next year, and looked a very worthy candidate when virtually "trotting up" against these. On this form, it's not unreasonable to think that he would've still been equally dominant had the race not been split. Atomic Bomb looked physically improved since a big run behind Rush Cutter on his last outing. He was all-out behind the winner and could never get on terms, a fact that further heightens the winner's expectations for better things. Golden Moment also ran a reasonable race but was always fighting an uphill battle to make a significant impression when the leading pair really stepped it up. [ROG]

Analysis: Helped significantly by the light impost, LIGHTNING BOLT made it two wins from four starts, with this good-looking score over a decent bunch. Ridden with the utmost confidence by hot apprentice Samuel, the son of Thady Quill got up at the death for the win, after racing well off the steady gallop for most of the 9-furlong distance. He's obviously a decent type and should further progress up the ranks. Hopefully a crack at the rich Tanglewood Stakes next year would be on his agenda as potential black-type. Proud Bajan still seeks his "first" win since that major disqualification sometime ago. He again came close with a fine burst of acceleration a furlong out, but found the winner too good in deep stretch. Uncle Jerry also keeps his smart form in tact, toughing it out to the end though lacking the pace of the first two in the final furlong. [ROG]

Analysis: Finally back to winning ways, and what better occasion to do it than the richest prize for open two year olds. Since his last win early on, the colt INDANGER refused to load the starting gates, and when he did, played second fiddle to the talented filly Purr Class. This time he would get sweet revenge, and the Michael Parravicino-trained youngster was mighty impressive in the group's first attempt at 7.8 furlongs. Surprisingly settled off the pace today, he found plenty in a hurry when pressed inside the two-furlong marker, and the outcome was quickly assured. Purr Class had somewhat of an excuse when hampered at the start and forced into mid-division of the fairly tight bunch. She cruised to the lead once clearing the hill, but failed to rally with the winner; his turn of foot substantially more than what she could handle today. Dany Dany seemed to be poised for a big run having been showing the propensity when sprinting, to be happier over further ground. With that opportunity today, the handsome bay was still unable to find a sharp change of pace when the chips were down, and lost it when the first two produced theirs when asked to stretch. [ROG]

Analysis: Benefiting from a flyer at the gates joint favourite SUPER STAR made all the running to emphatically land another win on the day for his stable. The five year old launched himself from the inside gate in a fashion rarely seen at The Garrison, and always had the field at his mercy. He won quite easily in the end and returned a very sharp final time to further underscore his well-being, and dominance of the event. Time D'or was always in pursuit of the winner, and was best of he rest in doing so. He seems to be back in decent form now and looks keen to make it more of a race next time out. Bipin was having just his second start since a long lay-off and appeared to be in slightly better shape than last time out. It was reflected in his effort too as he was prominently positioned in affairs early on, before left for dead when not quickening as the race really started under three furlongs out. [ROG]

Analysis: Signs of Classic-winning potential were apparent with LEAVE IT TO ME last time out, and they were further amplified here today when the daughter of Captain Charlie romped to a decisive victory in the year's final Two Year Old stakes. The small bay only got up at the death in her last start over lesser company, but ensured victory much sooner today when quickening away from the "big guns" of her division emphatically, adding lucrative black-type to her page in the process. The turn of foot she showed was nothing short of electrifying, and the signs are even more promising now for further success at the top level races for three year olds when the year turns. Probable Champion Two Year Old Rush Cutter was convincingly defeated today by a very good horse in the making, and (apart from a $100,000 bonus) lost little in defeat. He was rumoured to be suffering from a nagging sore shin since his last dominating win, and had his preparation interrupted significantly by that issue. To still run as he did having not missed a beat since the opening of the season only serves to confirm how big a heart the youngster has, and he'll undoubtedly be back with a vengeance next term as a more mature individual. Outeniqua who shocked many when breaking her maiden in the rich Bill Marshall Stakes in November, continued from that form well with another very likeable effort. She was short of room at the critical two-furlong pole, but still looked poised for another huge display down the lane. It didn't materialize as expected when having to switch away from the rail turning for home, but the daughter of Thady Quill kept on strongly behind the first two, and still looks to be a big force to reckon with as a three year old. Analysis: The Robert Peirce-trained SOCA QUEEN was all out in the end, but did enough to deny a stubborn Victor Ludorum and gained a well-deserved victory. She was unlucky last time out when completely missing the jump from the gates, but returned here a willing winner despite a bit untidy for the final 400 metres. Victor Ludorum has done very little wrong in his last three starts and hardly looks like slowing down. He conceded first run and consequently forfeited a passage along the inside to the winner, but did remarkably well to take the fight to that horse again after turning 4-wide for the judge. Double Dagger's ultra-consistency is well documented but worth mentioning again. The hard-trying fellow always finds himself in a jam when unable to pick his feet up fast enough, and that again accounted for his winning chances. [ROG]

Analysis: Another brilliant performance by the high-class three year old AREUTALKINTOME was the highlight of the day, in what was the colt's first test in open company; and what a test it was. The season (and calendar) finale has historically been a stage for stellar performances and this year proved to be no different. The result was a bit anti-climatic with a dead-heat for first being the judges final decision, however a seemingly rejuvenated JOHN BRIAN and Rickey Walcott tumbling down on the front-running crowd favourite created pandemonium only previously seen in the "good old days" of racing at The Garrison. The result answered the question of whether AREUTALKINTOME could handle the top rated group (a resounding "YES"), but it also opened the floor for a number of new questions as well as arguments of how either horse could've won had things unfolded differently. Some suggested that the younger colt would've won "hands down" had his rider not called on his sharp acceleration so soon when clearing the hill. Others argue that JOHN BRIAN would've easily been the sole victor had he not been forced wide turning for home. Either way the stage is set for the next Gold Cup prep (The Coolmore Stakes) when both horses are likely to be pitted against this year's gold Cup hero Daylight Express. AREUTALKINTOME's win follows the trend of 2009 set by Jamaican-bred superstar Bruceontheloose who hammered Trinidad's leading horses earlier in the year (and well before the Derby in September) and again just moments before this race ran. Hopes are high that these two will finally meet in the Gold Cup for a true "Caribbean Classic". Spicey Tiger was the third one home, and ran the race of his life to get that slot. He was evenly-placed in the sharp early gallop, but still couldn't find enough to trouble the first two in the final panel. The frantic fractions set up beautifully for an impressive final time just a few clicks of the track record and two tenths of a second shy of the stakes record, meaning that the Creole winner is now only the second locally bred horse to run sub-1:34 for the distance, and the first to do so as a three year old. Analysis: A good finish, a decent piece of riding, and a solid weight-carrying effort by LA PADRINO ended the year's racing on a pleasing note in this final handicap. As patient as ever, jockey Rocco Bowen saved ground on the inside behind horses seemingly un-flustered by the looming presence of five other foes, and was rewarded when the leading group opened up the rail allowing the grey access to winner's row. It wasn't all smooth sailing from there however, as he had to fight off a determined Why Not Dance in deep stretch for the prize money. Why Not Dance was in receipt of lots weight all around, but was still all out to catch the winner. Body N Soul has kept much better company than this in her hey-day but seems "over the hill" now. Still a good effort from the old mare who may very well be retired for the coming stud season. [ROG] |
