Analysis:
A sound effort by OUTENIQUA got the day's racing off to a fine start in this condition race for three year olds. It involved a trio of the better three year olds around, but developed into a three-horse race involving just one of those pre-race favourites principles. The winner OUTENIQUA again came to the fore in the contest with another gutsy effort, leaving the more fancied Lord Michael Taylor colt Captain Sully and his stable-mate Island Lad soundly beaten in her wake. Jockey Trotman was quite happy to drop the filly well off what was a decent pace, though looking somewhat in trouble over four furlongs out. Surely he must have known that the diminutive filly would pick herself up admirably and find enough to mow down her rivals with a steady surge. Runner-up Amanyara was fairly disappointing since winning her second outing five starts ago. She took the race to the opposition from the off, free-wheeling for a long way until when pressed just prior to the home turn; but stamina limitations gradually set in and she was worn down close home. It was a fairly game effort in any case, and certainly one that she could reproduce in a major test; however, she may find this distance to be her upper limit if attempting to venture further. Terentia came in here off a stylish win and second asking over 1100 metres. She settled kindly behind the leaders and saw out the distance relatively well, although unable to find enough when ridden to get further than the runner-up's flanks. Island Lad's roguish form continued here as he never got on terms with the leaders to make an impression. He raced with the blinkers off for the first time since early juvenile days and this may've been a factor in his lackluster effort today. The winner's display though was encouraging, as she along with leading three year old Leave It To Me look to be the first two (from the best of their generation) with the credentials to appreciate further, as the picture of this year's major Classic tests continues to take shape. Also quite encouraging was seeing signs of a renewed interest in racing by one of the country's biggest owners/breeders Sir Charles Williams, as he took part in the walk down winner's row; the first time in over a year. Analysis:
Eight-year-old gelding INHERIT THE WIND again found the line first for the third time in his last five outings, when again turning up late on the scene to grab the spoils over 1100 metres. The early gallop saw the old stager off his feet a bit as he was pushed along virtually throughout to stay within striking distance. Saving ground towards the inside until entering the straight, he quickened appreciably between horses and had done enough to hold off the fast finishing runner-up. The Liz Deane-trained bay is enjoying probably his best form to date, and may be this happy with himself for a bit longer yet. Super Dancer featured as the hard-luck story of the race, having missed the crucial break thus giving the opposition a lengthy head-start. Apprentice Ward gave the mare every chance thereafter when saving ground along the rail, and she just missed giving herself and the jockey back to back wins at the trip. The pole coming too soon is perhaps the only excuse Body N Soul has, after racing prominently throughout. She's been way off her best form in recent times, but on the basis of this run could still find the winning pole if meeting lesser company soon. [ROG]

Analysis:
Another useful-looking winner for sire Pen In Hand, came via a second three year old son in YOURS TRULY, as the chestnut readily dismissed a full field of maidens at third asking. Sent off as the 9/2 joint third choice in the betting, the colt notched up a promising score in the sprint, dominating the event from pillar to post and looking like a decent individual in the process. He showed significant improvement here (first apparent in the preliminaries) and looked a far cry from the horse that suffered at the hands of inexperience in two previous tries. The only real pressure came from newcomer Sophie (a likeable half-sister to local champ Apostle), who made the winner work pretty hard for most of the five and a half furlongs. Surely had she not angled poorly turning for the judge, the result may've been altered slightly; even if only that she would've held on for a closer second. Though a beaten favourite, she ran creditably here on debut and looks to be another exciting horse to follow. Joint-favourite Habibti didn't show her normal early pace, and found the resulting deficit too much to make up in the end. One would've thought initially that she should've done even better against these maidens, but considering the ability of the two she separated, her 2nd-place finish while in receipt of weight makes good sense. Most Wanted is a horse that seems to have some ability but keeps falling short wherever she is placed. The fact the she could still finish a relatively close fourth despite racing on virtually the same lead throughout (and never changing in the last four furlongs), proves that she is capable of much better. The final time was a respectable one and the winner should be even more effective next time out, now that he has had this vital dose of experience; considering he was marginally green in the run to the line. Analysis:
After forcing the group into a slow pace, 5/1 shot ROCAMADOUR made his second lifetime win look quite easy when he practically "trotted up" over nine furlongs. Last time out he broke his maiden against a poorer bunch with much less flair though in a similar fashion; and the similar tactics employed today, made his finish seem quite commanding against the more respectable foes of this division. A fairly steady galloper, he was always doing enough to keep the opposition at bay before a smart-looking sprint that put the result to bed quite nicely. Yet to show signs of top class ability, the son of Black Mambo obviously has some ability and appears poised for a useful career on the track. The first two quietly raced in tandem for most of the way, until the winner shook loose three furlongs out and finally turned it into a race. Tenpins Dancer gave a big performance upon his return in December after being castrated. He disappointed last time out in a fast-run 9-furlong event, but regained some degree of respect with this likeable run today. The four year old one-pacing type was forwardly-placed in affairs (a position that not surprisingly works to his advantage), and stuck to his task well, though unable to find a change of gear to stay with the winner. This contest was really intended to be the last prep for the Tanglewood Stakes next month, but the result did little to change the picture of that race (notwithstanding that Pretty In Red broke down and will have to miss her stakes test) as only a few nominees decided to take entry here. Don Portalsonny is the only other hopeful for that race to use this as a final warm-up, but his effort here (though 3rd) still isn't convincing of a return to his best. Bram Stoker again ran creditably for his connections, despite never really dropping his head and settling for jockey John. Being held-up behind the fairly tight bunch until just prior to the two-furlong marker, he lost his chance when not afforded a clear run between there and the home turn; conceding first run to the leaders in the process. Analysis:
A nice contest for the island's best sprinters and a final dress rehearsal for Spa Sprint Stakes hopefuls. The winner was nominated to that race initially but missed the final subscription due to skepticism of problems "down below". She showed no signs of such here in breaking her duck in fine style, making all of the running against all but the current track record holder Super Star. Trainer Kenneth Stanton was as pleased as punch at AZWA's effort, despite the fact that she carried the lightest weight if the field, compliments of the race conditions. The English-bred four year old made the lead easily and was always traveling the best, quickening appreciably in the final quarter-mile to stave off the opposition. Peaceful Envoy was having his second run since returning from a brief and unsuccessful stint at Woodbine racetrack in Canada. The colt looked in pretty good shape and seems to be on target for a big run come March 6th. Sharp Impact is another who will take the world of beating in the Sprint considering how well he finished up in this warm-up, his first race in eleven and a half months. The weights will be much closer next time out, and this will enhance his chances significantly especially now that he's got a run under his girth. Time D'or was one of the disappointments, failing to land a blow at any point throughout the 1100 metres. He's been enjoying some very pleasing form of recent and looked the part beforehand, but perhaps gave this better group of horses too much of a head-start from the off. [ROG]

Analysis:
What more can be said of SOCA QUEEN? Her ultra-consistency and toughness once again manifested, this time showing up the limitations of what on paper looked like a better bunch than what she'd been beating. Settling kindly behind the leaders in her customary fashion, the attractive daughter of Thady Quill was still cruising on the bit when taking up the running, and at one point appeared to be poised for a total demolition of the field. She did find a change of pace when finally asked to go on, but the runner-up had other plans. Gold Digger has been toiling in four of her five most recent tries, and may've been something of a surprise when running the winner down as she did. She's clearly back to good form now, should again go close next time out. Irish Thunder continues the struggle for his first win, which looks likely to come only if he's dropped a bit further down in class. Thunder Bird is beginning to look like something closer to the promising galloper he looked like as a late two/early three year old. Obviously much fitter than on his return a fortnight ago, the gelded bay though still looking short of his best asserted himself well and should be a worthy bet next time seen out. The winner though was again quite impressive, and not only did she win in gutsy fashion, but confirmed her well-being by returning a time much faster than standard for this group. It also proved that the filly is as tough as nails despite campaigning fairly hard since early November, and owner Helen Spencer could not be more pleased with her good fortune. [ROG]

Analysis:
This year's renewal of the Rotherley Construction Stakes & Trophy produced a smart winner in INDANGER, who again pulverized his counterparts over 7.8 furlongs. It was only the second race at the distance for the imported two year olds of last year (both of which carry considerable value), and the winner followed up his easy score in the first, with another outstanding win. Once asked to stretch by Trotman, the Forest Danger colt strangled the opposition with a lethal dose of acceleration and had it won well over a furlong out. Reward Me gained his first black-type when getting up along the inside for second spot. He had no chance of catching the winner, but did find himself short of room a furlong from home, preventing a marginally closer finish. Mingun Temple was lucky to not have been penalised by the stewards for failing to keep a straight course and causing interference inside the final furlong. He continued at one pace in the stretch after blazing a trail with Run Alke Run through the first five furlongs. Dany Dany was also stuck at one pace when it mattered, but was gaining slowly on the retreating Mingun Temple before shying away from that horse as he began hanging to the right when under pressure. Analysis:
A change of trainers again did the trick, this time for the American-bred KUDAM who finally broke her maiden when dismissing the lowest rated group over five and a half furlongs. The four year old even looks to be in much better shape since joining the Jonathan Simpson barn. She'd shown much promise early in her career as a two year old, but that potential was thwarted by problems some of which still pose challenges to her connections (not the least of which is her inability to sweat properly); this in mind, she is surely capable of doing better. The filly looked quite impressive against this mediocre group, but the true measure of her improvement will soon be apparent when she's campaigned against better over the next couple of starts at least. The others were no closer than a long-looking four and a half lengths back, with Surreal getting closest. It looked like a separate race from the winner's, but she did well to sweep through the opposition after racing in last early on. Tears Of The Sun is still seeking a maiden win, twenty tries into his career. Understandably not his ideal trip, he performed as expected and may still find a win in similar company. [ROG]
