Analysis:

A fairly dominating win for the American-bred CHARGE IT, who made all here to open his account in good style. The chestnut was pushed to lead early, and always travelled kindly for jockey Crawford. He wasn't doing much on the front end until clearing the hill when picking up the pace slightly to fend off the third place-getter. The colt quickened well once entering the home straight and despite not displaying a sharp acceleration, had already done enough to seal the result. Irish Thunder followed his stable-mate home but only just as he was finding it difficult to gain ground quickly enough when ridden. He kept on to lead late in what was essentially a race for the runner-up money, obviously needed every inch of the ground he saved by racing along the rail. Canduit Tuya raced at the leader's flanks for a long way but found little when asked to quicken. She was in no league with the winner but this was one of her better runs in recent times as she seems to be more effective after a break from competition.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Not a very competitive handicap except for the first three who flashed past the line with less than a length separating them. It was always a three-horse race in fact, as the first three home merely changed positions in deep stretch before the first two fought it out to the line. The result though would be perhaps the best imaginable for the winning owner who saw just a nose separate her two charges on this occasion; the reversed result of the pair's last meeting. DOUBLE DAGGER got his revenge today but it didn't come easy as he had to muster every one of determination to come out on top. Unable to sprint when pressed, the four year old was just able to stay on terms when asked to stretch, and in fact only picked up at the death when all out in a renewed challenge for the lead. He's now been no lower than third in ten of twelve career starts, and readily added another well deserved win to his résumé. Runner-up Soca Queen is proving to be as consistent as her conqueror having won or placed in five of her last seven starts. She fell victim today to bad luck when not afforded a free passage until one furlong from home, but asserted herself quickly when finally shown daylight. She was arguably as good as the winner today and it isn't unreasonable to think that could've made it three straight wins had she won first run on the colt. Deal Or Nodeal turned in another huge effort from the front-end, despite giving way grudgingly inside the final panel following a brief fight about a furlong out. She again ran creditably for trainer Saffie Joseph Jnr., especially when considering the 130lbs she carried at the helm of the handicap. The others were quite a way back and appeared to be in a different class altogether. A satisfying result however for owner Helen Spencer, who must be even higher on cloud nine after the repeat performance from her charges.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Five year old BRAM STOKER collected his sixth career win with a fairly easy triumph over nine furlongs. Despite back to last of the small field at one stage, the handsome son of Janak was never really in trouble, as he quickly extricated himself from that position when asked a question by experienced apprentice Kenny John. The result was clear from as much as a furlong out despite the favourite Kanon's decent attempt to make a race of it for the run up to the line. Both the first and second found plenty from just a few lengths off the steady pace, pulling nicely away towards the end of the contest. Uncle Jerry was closest to the pace-setter early on, but was suddenly beaten for speed when the first two turned it up two furlongs out. He looked in serious trouble turning for home, but kept grinding away as usual under the top weight and salvaged some respect when getting back up for third.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Another three year old maiden with potentially useful individuals occupying the top spots. Four starts into her career and the Philip Batson-trained filly SEA GYPSY showed continued improvement in dismissing the win-less group over 7.8 furlongs. She still looked quite green in the running, but stuck to her task well after being asked to get serious 600 metres from home. She was considerably far back and behind most of the field at that point, and stayed on quite well after being forced to circle the field well off the rail, despite an awkward head carriage. In addition to this she picked up nicely to gain on the runner-up Up The Ante who at that critical point seemed to be travelling much the best of the twelve runners. The winner though looks to have some scope and is sure to improve once filling into her immature frame. The Robert Peirce trainee Up The Ante had anything but a trouble-free run, and at this stage looks a similar Classic "dark horse" to his stable-mate Show Me The Money last year. Local Speed was a bit disappointing here after backed down to favouritism before-hand. Full of himself in the preliminaries, the leggy gelding may've got on with it too soon with the other pace-setters, and had little to offer resistance down the lane. Debutante Dance The Distance is an exciting prospect who hails from a successful yard. He was forced farther back in the field than ideal and raced a bit waywardly in stages, but kept on remarkably well under a firm hand by the jockey when finally realizing what was required of him; definitely a horse to watch.   [ROG]

Analysis:

With one faller early in affairs, this would prove to be a very untidy handicap that would cause a lengthy delay due to a warranted stewards inquiry. A charge of six abreast turning for home set the stage for a mêlé that would affect the chances of the current leaders, in what was essentially a roughly-run event. In the end the positions remained unchanged, and it's doubtful that the winner was ever in jeopardy of losing that prize when looking at the evidence. QUE PASA was making her 21st attempt at the game and finally found the winner's enclosure, notably with some authority. She'd been involved in a rubbing of shoulders (to put it mildly) at the furlong pole, but was full of run (having left her run for later than most) and readily sprinted away from the bunch. Midnight Waltz was unlucky as she'd been crying out for room for most of the final two and a half furlongs. She did pull away slightly once free, but lacked a sufficient change of pace to press the winner. Randy Andy had every chance turning for the judge though held out six-wide just prior to the furlong marker. He attempted a rally until half-way through the short stretch, when also beaten for a turn of foot late. The final furlong fracas affected Herecomeshanna, Charletanne and Tears Of The Sun the most, as they all seemed poised for big efforts in the final furlong, though unlikely to trouble the commanding winner.   [ROG]

*NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT RACEDAY

FEBRUARY 13, 2010 ROTHERLEY CONSTRUCTION RACEDAY

Analysis:

A fairly hotly contested sprint with half of the field looking to have a chance turning for home. The speed didn't hold, and the closers found favour with this in the final two panels. Six year old mare SUPER DANCER with the benefit of a 7-lb claim, easily dismissed the opposition to give young apprentice Affrie Ward his first win and an early taste of victory. She's a fairly honest campaigner and may still be capable of a sixth win before the pending retirement. The promise of winning apprentice Affire Ward was mentioned last race meeting when the youngster got his introduction. He rode a decent race on the attractive bay, only a bit anxious when punching the air before crossing then line and almost losing it as his moment in time. Johnny Sad Boy was the only one of the speeders to remain in contention at the finish. Another honest and consistent fellow, he found conceding 14lbs to the winner a bit much in the end. Inherit The Wind was again late on the scene but still good enough for the third place cheque.    [ROG]

Analysis:

Sheer euphoria aptly described the atmosphere after local hero APOSTLE emphatically returned to winning form in a stellar renewal of the Coolmore "Home of Champions" Stakes. The six year old had been under a dark cloud for the last eleven months following the controversial Gold Cup of 2009. The chestnut however, returned here to readily pound the opposition into submission and romped to another decisive victory in the Grade 1 event, in a fashion reminiscent of the APOSTLE of old. By the two-furlong pole most were already hammered, and the gelding only needed to be shaken up mildly in the straight by Trotman to put the result to bed, going further away towards the end. Though a quite satisfying result for most, it prompted questions from critics of whether he can be equally effective if not allowed a soft lead come Gold Cup day. One certain thing is that he is returning to his best form at a time when he'll need to be, as the nominations for this year's marquee event so far look to be the best ever assembled. Connections of runner-up and former Gold Cup hero Pure Temptation must have been as pleased as punch to see him finish as he did. The bay horse's career has been hindered by problems which resulted in his absence from competition for five months before this, but he ran today like he hadn't missed a step and is worthy of  a place in the Gold Cup line-up. Border Secret may very well take her chances in the Cup as well although helped along here with the controversial weight conditions of the race in her favour. She found her best stride late in affairs, but may've needed a stronger ride in the final furlong to bid for second place. So with this prep now in the books, we eagerly look forward to the Cup in five weeks, a showpiece that promises for the first time in history to pit major North American graded stakes winners against two of the best Creole champions in the history of local racing; certainly an event not to be missed! *NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT RACEDAY

FEBRUARY 13, 2010 ROTHERLEY CONSTRUCTION RACEDAY

Analysis:

A second 1-2 finish on the program for trainer Elizabeth Deane as the well-fancied DARK KNIGHT held grittily to the lead and denied his stable companion Time D'or handicap sprint. The small field represented just two trainers, and Deane swept the prize-money when also conditioning the third place-getter Cash Boy. The dueling pair to report home first were 1-2 throughout and virtually dominated the event, pulling clear in the stretch before having to be separated by the photo-finish camera. The 14lbs advantage in the weights favouring the winner surely made the difference in the outcome as he looked unbeatable on paper by a long way. The runner-up though made a race of it and surely could've reversed placings even if just a couple of pounds down in the handicap. The ride on Cash Boy ought to be questioned as he appeared to be full of run with little room prior to turning for the judge. Surely a bit more effort on jockey Lunan's part throughout the stretch would've seen the gelding closer than the three and a half lengths he was beaten, and maybe even troubling the first two.  [ROG]
