Analysis:
The opening contest on the card was again reserved for the babies, and they handled the rain-affected surface well enough for their 5-furlong contest. The newcomers appeared un-phased for the most part by the ground, showing reasonable form to take up the minor places.
The winner though would be their once-raced stablemate ISLAND MEMORIES, a handsome half-brother to stakes-placed winner Island Lad. He was a bit outpaced by the speeders early on, but stuck grimly to his work to get by Vitality in the final furlong. The son of Happy Memories showed a fine turn-around in form from his first outing, building on that experience to score nicely in the end. The much talked about colt Vitality showed good promise here on debut, with immaturity perhaps his only excuse for defeat. It seems that the colt may've "missed the company" after sailing to a clear half-way through, and forfeited some of the advantage at a point where he should've been poised to increase the tempo. Istanbul found little once off the bridle, but also stayed on well despite looking beaten at the furlong pole. Winning rider Randy Whitter was also breaking his maiden in this one, and the Jamaican-born youngster who recently struck a relationship with trainer Anderson Ward, has provided the Blue Diamond team with instant success.
Another fact to note is that each of the first four horses home were bred by Sir Charles Williams' operation, as was last raceday's other two year old winner Slip Stream. This falls in line with the breeder's record from last year where the likes of Leave It To Me, Outeniqua, Island Lad et al gave the operation a huge boost with their fortunes. [ROG]

Analysis:
The three year old maidens were next up to do battle, and the conditions were worsened by another bout of steady precipitation which gave the nine-furlong event the appearance of a longer journey. It provided an upset of sorts, and the beaten favourite may've also lost some support for his claims as a Classic horse (or perhaps the winner is better than initially thought).
The lion's share of the purse went to a strapping fellow named CONQUEST, who was returning for just his second attempt at the game following an eye-opener just a fortnight ago. For vigilant punters the result would not have been that much of a shock, but the others who allowed him to get away at odds of 8/1, would still be counting their losses as the betting in no way reflected the performance he was about to give. The handsome bay had shown promise in his only previous outing (at a trip short of optimum considering the pedigree), but found everything to his liking on this occasion and duly capitalized. He picked up in fine style when French jockey Luana Lalung shook the reins at him, and despite losing her whip two furlongs out, she managed to get enough effort for the colt to do the business. With the start of his career delayed for sometime due to injury, he's made a favourable beginning. Though the inexperience showed a bit in the closing stages, the son of Sea Raven should come on nicely from this run and looks like a decent type and one to follow. On form as the sole guideline, Up The Ante looked head and shoulders above this opposition beforehand but may've been the victim of the tactics, having handed a tough assignment when asked to quicken from off a slow pace in heavy going. He did find a good change of pace late, but the winner had already flown and though still holding an entry in the Derby, the flashy chestnut would be out to sea there unless he has a huge effort looming under his sleeve. Supporters of Dakdada must be growing weary of the colt's efforts, despite almost always hitting the board in the final analysis. He is still a fairly honest fellow, but perhaps classier individuals beat him today and his search for a win unabatedly continues. [ROG]

Analysis:
Not a very competitive sprint, and this was hardly a surprise since more than half the field were still maidens, and only a couple of the winners had shown any pleasing form in recent times at the trip. One of these was the eventual winner, and looks like a smart performer going forward. The Liz Deane-trained SURINAN nicely rewarded her connections' decision to forego a spot in the more valuable Coronation Sprint Stakes, in favour of this weaker race. Now a winner in two of her four lifetime starts, the daughter of Surya Bhagwan continues heading in the direction of a useful sprinter with this being her finest example thus far. The rider was a picture of confidence once clearing the hill, and his filly responded with just the slightest urging to smoothly put the result to bed. Most Wanted was the other recent winner, a "much the best" romp in the start prior to this being the catalyst in her popularity in the betting market. She appeared to have no excuses to really blame the defeat on, except maybe lacking a sufficient finishing kick to stave off the winner's challenge. Jihad had every chance as well, but ran as he did last time out when second over a similar trip, this time lacking a finish after racing closer to the pace on this occasion. [ROG]

Analysis:
The well-backed REWARD ME campaigning for the second time over 1800 metres, took full advantage of the slushy turf and wired his field with quite some authority. The market leader (and rightfully so after solid efforts behind the classy Mingun Temple), was never far off the headline but settled kindly behind runners early on. His response when asked to stretch was immediate and with the leaders affording him a healthy space towards the inner, the contest was as good as over in a matter of strides. The well-grown colt as expected took some time to progress into the individual he is today, but looks the sort likely to win lots more races if campaigned sensibly. Just Jiving had no chance of catching the winner, in fact he'd done just enough to get by the front-running Deal Or Nodeal in the final panel. Lacking a change of pace when called upon was again to his undoing, but the seven year old stayed on well to get second money. Deal Or Nodeal dictated the pace for most of the way, by the top-weighted entrant had no reply to the winner's charge when that horse got going. [ROG]

Analysis:
A race that has been claimed by some very decent horses in its short history, and equally outstanding efforts on the day. Though supported by a small field for this year's renewal the result was again dominated by a high-class horse.
The juvenile champion of last year RUSH CUTTER, needs no introduction. A colt of immense talent and an enviable record to boot, he added this prize to his growing list of accomplishments in the style of a horse destined for even greater things. The powerful bay was always travelling like the winner, and didn't need to do much to assert his superiority. In fact young apprentice Whitter was thought to have been a bit too excited with his whip in the final furlong when the colt had clearly done more than enough to see off the field. The winner gave his owner Lord Michael Taylor a second winner in the event (a feat achieved once before by Sir David Seale), and considering that he's virtually untried as a three year old, there could be bigger engagements for this fellow once handled with care. Both Habibti and Prince Of Groves were decisively beaten and this form places them well below the level of the winner. The former seems to be coming back into her best form, while Prince Of Groves continues to be a consistent campaigner. Bond Street was never involved, her chances probably thwarted by the going; while Fedrica weakened away tamely around the halfway mark. [ROG]

*NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO RACE #8
Analysis:
By no means a keenly contested handicap, as the winner made the opponents look ordinary. JOHNNY SAD BOY turned his foes into a procession of followers for the final quarter of a mile, returning to the winner's encloure for only the second time in his career. He did however come close on a number of previous occasions, but perhaps the combination of a sloppy track and a drop in company made the difference in the outcome. Normally a fairly useful campaigner, the son of Zwick rebounded here from a series of below average efforts (albeit against better company), and virtually hacked home with ten lengths to spare on his nearest rival. The smallish five year old entire assured himself consideration for a stiff penalty as a result of this dominating win, but could be still left in a sweet spot at the weights if meeting this group again soon on similar conditions - especially if partnered again by 7lb claiming apprentice. Quality Time continued her fine form in the runner-up spot (now three straight), though soundly trounced by the winner. The daughter of Federico stayed on well in the deep track, and though still a maiden after seven tries, she always tries hard and has shown enough to suggest a win could be coming soon. Que Pasa too had decent form to go on, but found herself too far back in the field when the first two made their critical moves for home; still a creditable effort considering the ground she made up to get third place. Analysis:
Now in its ninth year, the Queen's Plate often produced a decent winner. With only two sprinters rated above 120 on the handicapping list, it was virtually open to all of the better horses in training. Unfortunately a few late scratches (some due to the track condition) took lots of interest away, but in the end the contest still provided a grand finish and another stout effort by a decent horse.
The powerful Taylor stables enjoyed a huge treble on the day, capped by this victory on the card's other feature. Less than ninety minutes after landing his first stakes win as a trainer with top three year old sprinter Rush Cutter, young conditioner Ward saddled the outstanding creole SHOW ME THE MONEY for good measure, to make all the running and land the second stakes win of his career. Sent to the front from the off, the colt was always in control and only ever appeared in trouble when pressured in the run up to the line by Charge It. A really tough and consistent fellow, the winner looks to now be worthy of a place among the island's leading runners and will likely continue to be a force at the longer trips. Charge It was the light-weight entry here, and used that advantage to get closest to the winner. Still on the improve and on the basis of this run, he'll likely be sent out against this lot soon. Old faithful Pure Temptation over five lengths adrift of the first two, but had done enough for 3rd despite looking beaten about two furlongs out. Also owned by Lord Taylor, the bay horse further hammered home the point of that stable's presence in local racing. On the day the team scored three winners (including a 1-2-3 finish in the opener), and the effect of this win made even sweeter when one recalls Bouncebak's similar pillar to post victory last year. [ROG]

APPRENTICES RULE - Young Shad Belle only had to steer VICTOR LUDORUM
to a convincing win over 1100 metres in the day's final, appropriately ending
a successful day in the saddle for the apprentices.

*NO WINNERS; CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT RACEDAY,
AUGUST 7, 2010 (UNITED INSURANCE DERBY DAY)
Analysis:
A welcomed return to winning form for Mr. Philip Batson's VICTOR LUDORUM, providing another runaway win on the day when scoring in his handicap by some seven lengths. The colt had struck really good form upon changing hands to the current stable towards the end of last year, but suffered a damaged withers shortly after, in an unfortunate stable accident. That he could return this type of form in the time he's had is quite remarkable, and hopefully things will continue in this vein for the son of Forty Mile. Who's Calling turned in another decent effort though never in a position to alter the result further. She was clearly beaten a furlong from home, but luckily got the better of Supercharge on the line as that horse had been eased down too soon before the line. [ROG]
