Analysis:

A useful win by imported three year old BIRD WATCH got the day’s racing off to a fine start. The Graeme Hall colt following up a good effort against his three year old contemporaries last time out, with this descent maiden win over 7.8 furlongs and some useful adversaries. He got the run of the race along the rail, and simply had a more effective turn of foot than anything else, and was a certain winner a furlong out when jockey Trotman really got serious. It was a run of some promise and the Liz Deane-trained colt was much the best in the end. Gudfridie again provided a stout effort for his supporters, finding only the winner’s turn of foot too sharp in the end. His consistency continued again here with this respectable effort, and he looks set to have an impact on this group for longer still. Bramstoker was again in the money, but perhaps would’ve been closer had he not raced so wide for most of the way. This undoubtedly left the colt (who does his best running against the rail) with too much to do. He was never afforded that luxury today, but this effort suggests that he’s not far off winning form.    [ROG]

Analysis:

The lightly-raced Federico filly RED BALL EXPRESS, stole the spotlight from her more fancied stablemate Double Dagger, with a stylish front-running triumph in this weak-looking maiden. Thought to be more of a sprinter, she took a keen hold from the gate, then tricked the opposition into following a slow pace before sprinting away for a smart maiden win. With ears pricked virtually throughout, the nice-looking bay was never seriously threatened except for mild pressure from the runner-up inside the final furlong. She looked like the winner a long way out when the others were hard at work to keep up. Que Pasa as usual settled behind horses and conceded first run to most. She did cover substantial ground in the final quarter mile, but the winner had her measured and kept the advantage to the line. It was quite a disappointing run from the favourite Double Dagger who previously asserted himself so much better against more highly regarded opponents. The rangy colt seemed poised for a winning assault 3f out, but never picked up enough to forcefully engage the winner. He was undoubtedly a victim of the slow pace and was also reported to not be as effective on the sticky ground. All in all not a truly run race, but a win nonetheless for the Nunes-trained runner, who got away at odds of 20-1 and is now the seventh winner for her generally under-utilised sire.  [ROG]

 Analysis:

Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing and Robert Peirce reconfirmed their hold (at least for now) on the juvenile contests with another one-sided result in this first stakes event for two year olds. Positions of the finishers may have shifted when compared to two weeks ago, but trainer Peirce still dominated the event, saddling the first four home; with the 1-2-3 owned by the aforementioned owner mogul. RUSH CUTTER would significantly turn the tables on his debut conqueror Spellbound, with a convincing trouncing of that filly over an extra ½ furlong. The well-grown colt tracked the leaders before pouncing menacingly turning for home, and seemed to be going farther away the closer the line came. He’s thus far the only representative of his sire’s first crop to race, and after this display became his first winner and stakes winner - albeit in a minor stakes. Spellbound was quite impressive in her career opener and duly started favourite to provide an encore performance. She however, seemed to be struggling to find more in the sticky ground after getting away early and shaking off the speedy Fedrica. A smallish filly, she was unable to maintain the pace after four furlongs had been covered and though not having as much scope as the winner, still looks capable of representing herself well once the going is in her favour. Island Lad is still a bit behind the learning curve and does not possess the early pace of the principles in this group. He stayed on admirably to just take third though stumbling badly close home. The smallish colt like the winner, looks a sound choice as the distances stretch out later in the year. Fedrica took some money down with a disappointing effort on this occasion. She found nothing of significance when pressed for an effort, and finished looking rather stressed from the effort. Still a desirable result for Lord Michael Taylor to win a race staged in memory of his deceased wife.  [ROG]

Analysis:

Another pillar to post triumph for the heavily fancied STORM WARNING who now boasts two successive wins at her favoured trips. Breaking sharply from the inside gate, the daughter of Blast Of Storm was quickly to the head of affairs and always seemed in full control though tested by the speedy Unreal early on. Once shaken up by Ward a furlong from the money, she kept up the gallop to register another score for in-form conditioner Robert Peirce. Runner-up Moonshine has been a very difficult horse to follow, but showed up today with arguably her best effort to date. She was a bit unlucky in lacking racing room when approaching the two furlong marker, but could get no further than the winner’s flank though getting there quickly. The diminutive filly took a horrible step in the same spot as Island Lad in the previous event, but was by then beaten into second. Unreal showed lots of pace leaving the boxes, and tried her best to harass the leader. She stuck to her task for a bit after being asked a question by the rider, but could never find enough to trouble the winner nor stave off the runner-up. [ROG]

Analysis:

The second of three feature races on the day fell to the Taylor/Peirce team once again, and their dominance was further underscored by yet a second 1-2 finish. Talented Creole BOUNCEBAK came to the fore and gave a stellar performance to secure her biggest win to date, her first since December last year. With Apostle and Daylight Express both absent, the five year old mare made light work of the opposition in an effort that was arguably second only to her Gold Cup try. Quite a facile victory it was as she had everyone struggling to keep up just inside the 3, with stable-mate Pure Temptation the only one within striking distance of de-railing the mare. She was only popped a serious question by Ward turning for home, and did enough in an instant to quickly seal the outcome. Pure Temptation was the subject of an unexplained disappointment last time out, but returned here with a typical effort under the top impost. He’s been struggling to find his best form for some time now, and this is perhaps as close as he’s come for some time now. Preach To Me was joint high-weight in the field after a runaway win last time out against most of these. A slight adjustment in his tactics which proved successful a fortnight ago may’ve been to his detriment today as he was never able to keep up the gallop once the heat was turned up.   [ROG]

Analysis:

A competitive-looking handicap and some useful efforts to boot. The winner TURBULENT GUY is not the soundest of horses, but again showed that he is a very able runner once conditions are in his favour. He came from far off of a strong pace to wire the field turning for home, and ran out a relatively easy winner in-spite of big efforts from the two who immediately followed him home. With the rainy season upon us, a close eye should be kept on him when he’s placed next. Further credit to his effort was the final time of 1:35.6, a respectable return on a track that was 1-1½ seconds slower than optimum. The win was also a pleasing sight for his trainer Naz Issa who has been experiencing some fairly lean times of recent. Queendora was retried here in handicap company again after an unsuccessful stakes debut last time out. To this point she seems to have a place on the podium whenever campaigning against this company, and is also one to follow next time out. Big Girls Don’t Cry went wrong after a pleasing career start at two. She’s been away from competition for seven months due injury, but ran huge in this return. She was hard held behind horses and found a good change of pace when asked, only tiring close home to just miss for 2nd.   [ROG]

Analysis:

This was quite an open contest with a number of capable sprinters lined up to take aim at the prize. Leading three year old filly Heaven Sent was among those entered, but neither she nor any of the other seven could get on terms with the very speedy JANAKI on this occasion. Sent off at 4-1 from the outside barrier, the Janak filly shot to a clear lead early on amidst a fracas that put an end to the chances of favourite All Aboard. It was a confident ride from Trotman who had plenty horse left when rushing by the two furlong marker, even after she was sweating up and quite flustered in the preliminaries. She didn’t angle well turning for the judge, but even with the rail open no one could get closer than the filly allowed. Millennium Mile was thought to be outclassed against these, but was offered compensation from the race conditions affording her just 106lbs. She cruised behind the leaders before switched to the outside for a run that forced her just ahead of the unlucky St. Nicholas Bay. The latter was squeezed for racing room along the rail at a critical stage in his challenge, and was just outdueled by the runner-up when finally shaking free turning for home. Dark Knight came late between horses and finished virtually in a line with the 2nd and 3rd home. This showing further confirms his affinity for the shorter trips and it’s interesting now to see where he is next seen out. Heaven Sent did not catch the eye beforehand and is perhaps still not feeling full of herself. She does have ample time prior to her date with the Derby, and having not been harassed by the rider, this warm up should go a long way in her preparation. The winner now joins her genetic relative Poetic Justice and is the second daughter Janak to lift this sprint prize for three year olds.   [ROG]

Analysis

Mrs. Gay Smith’s home-bred colt SUPER STAR put up a game effort in this final event to deny a group of good sprinters in a keenly contested handicap. Just two lengths separated the first four home, but a nose is all the dark bay needed to gain his fourth (and hardest fought) career win. He benefitted from a 5lb claim through apprentice Antonio Bishop, but was still the high-weight in the 5f event. His return from injury to now be recognized as one of the island’s leading sprinters is quite a feat, and should be credited to his ability and that of trainer Edward Walcott. The five year old is now likely to be tested when lining up for the coveted Breeders’ Sprint Stakes next month. Sabria Light ran quite as expected considering she was the lowest handicapped horse with the ability to compete against this group when at her best. She seems to be back to her best form and should find a win soon once placed suitably. Her stable companion Time D’or was again in the money but may’ve appreciated an extra ½ furlong and a rail run, as he finished admirably on the outside, and just failed to snatch the win.   [ROG]
