Comments:
Mid-morning watering by officials and a judicious dose of precipitation less than an hour before the start of racing ensured a slight cushion to the surface for the 9-race card. A small field of six two year olds was the first on display, having their introduction to competition in a 1000 metres event. There’s always an air of excitement and anticipation surrounding the babies, with the search now fully on for future stakes and classic winners. The result produced was a smart-looking effort by SPELLBOUND, an attractive daughter of Captain Charlie who had been highly regarded in the betting following impressive showings in morning gallops. She darted from the gate as expected and though veering left early, readily went to the head of affairs. Moderate pressure from Rush Cutter was ineffective and the filly remained unfazed; she quickened up admirably once shaken up under a hand-ride turning for home to win eased down with two lengths to spare. Her older ½ sister Mesmerize was a poor maiden, but already this one (a $25,000 yearling) looks more of a worthy representative of her dam. Fedrica (as was the winner) looked physically prepared for competition and ran appropriately. She broke sharply and tracked the leader willingly, but may’ve been a bit unlucky to not make more of an impression having steadied for a lack of running room 300 metres out. Once free, the chestnut kept on well for second though never looking like troubling the winner who was still not fully extended and always going the better. Like most of her ½ siblings (Mr. Price, Pretty Penny, etc.) she misbehaved at the starting gate, and even took a couple of tumbles when tried. Put that aside her career too looks promising and she should again be a force to reckon with next time out. Rush Cutter is a strong, rangy-looking son of first crop sire Wertz, a multiple winning sprinter in North America. He was pushed along early to keep pace with the leading two, and did come with a ½ length of the winner going by the three. That however was as close as he would get to the winner who was merely being steered. This colt should improve with time and this likeable run augurs well for a pleasing start to his sire’s stud career. The others were well back and looked generally hopeless, at least for the time being. Island Lad headed that group home after trailing at one point. He’s a handsome, compact son of the talented Island Girl but still looks backward in his preparation and this run under his girth could only be a benefit. Next home was Amanyara, a full sister to the ill-fated Saucy Brass and three parts sister to Macho Uno. She was slowest away but recovered quickly in the first furlong. She was under pressure to pick it up two furlongs out and began to tire once turning in for home. Even further behind the clock is Poor Paul, a precocious-looking daughter of Zwick out of a mare who is yet to produce a horse of any merit. She looked quite unprepared physically and will need to step up in a major way to be recognized among the first trio home. The result sealed a rare 1-2-3-4 for trainer Robert Peirce, who has been in fine form with his large group of representatives. Eyes will be squarely set on his juveniles this year, to see who else can be added to his embarrassment of riches. [ROG]

Comments:
Further showers added fuel to the fire inside TURBULENT GUY who always enjoys a softer footing on which to compete. Handicapped to his liking and racing against poorer company thanks to efforts well below his best form, the six year old was never far off the pace before engaging the leading group with a 3-wide. Apprentice Jalon Samuel gave the Naz Issa-trained gelding a confident ride, and never required the use of his stick to secure the win. Turbulent Guy’s run was a pleasing return to form and he found more favour with supporters at the last minute when the rain approached to almost guarantee his transformation. Runner-up Sweet Harmony is an honest little filly and provided an effort in-keeping with her recent respectable form. This is now her sixth straight finish in the money, and is now no lower than second in her last five starts. She locked horns with a stubborn Lion King turning for the judge, and then pointed briefly before accounted for by the winner; another solid effort to her record. Lion King was last early with a dawdling pace upfront but improved his position to track the leader along the rail after three furlongs. He came under a vigorous ride at the top of the hill and held his place well in the then quicker pace that existed. He threw down a serious challenge for the lead just before turning in, then tried to rally between horses when overtaken by the runner-up. Connections must be pleased at how he battled on in the straight, though to get the better of Sweet Harmony for second. It was a creditable effort and certainly warrants hope of him being a better horse when matured as a four year old. Arm Candy set the pace and tried to make all after finding herself in the driver’s seat after no one seemed keen on the lead. Jockey Ward then set a slower rhythm than what the mare may have liked as she was beaten for speed in the closing stages of the contest. Nonetheless, the five year old mare seems to be a happier camper these days, and should continue this good form at least long enough to win another soon. Aisling was last for most of the way, and pushed to keep up going down the back stretch. She began a run towards the outside and turned for home within striking position of the leaders. Looking for a way between horses that came too late for her to do anything with it, she was then eased down when the chance of finishing on the board was lost. [ROG]

Comments:
With most options for the imported three year olds now limited to open company in which they’d line up against older, more seasoned campaigners, it was good to see this group have the stage to themselves over 7.8 furlongs in this contest. Missing from this group was Peaceful Envoy, Words Of The Wise, Bloumberg and Tenpins Dancer; however the race was still an exciting contest and offered insight into the true ability of the winner GRACE CHAPEL. The daughter of Chapel Royal has been quite unlucky when sent out against the “big guns” in particular her showing in the OBS Stakes when beaten 3½ lengths by Ring Time after meeting trouble early in that race. Today she confirmed the confidence of her connections with a tough reversal of fortunes, stubbornly turning back that rival in the dying stages. Keen from the gate and prominently placed on the outside of horses by Trotman, the dark bay disputed the lead with newcomer Irish Thunder through very tepid early fractions, forced by the now slippery conditions. She held her position well when things got serious going over the hill but lost the advantage to Ring Time who was at that stage going better than anything. Grace Chapel found more in the stretch and rallied between horses courageously to deny and claim the prize that almost slipped her grasp. Ring Time was last early and did well to accelerate off a creeping pace. Further to his credit, one can argue that he may’ve won had he not stumbled in the mud a few strides from the line, even though the winner was steadily reducing the narrow lead she’d conceded. His turn of foot is very effective and this effort shows that he can battle. Having run another fine race, the chestnut gelding could be poised for even better things ahead. Debutante Irish Thunder is a strongly-made, rugged-looking fellow with plenty of scope for the future. He raced virtually in tandem with the winner and still made a race of it when the chips were down. He ran like more of a seasoned campaigner and looks like a useful horse to follow now that he has this experience to fall on. Bird Watch’s only worthy effort prior to this one was a second to Athena three starts back. This is undoubtedly his first decent run against horses with respectable form and it shouldn’t be long before he reproduces such form to enable a score. [ROG]

Comments:
With 129lbs to shoulder, four year old GIN FOR ME easily dismissed ten others to register a good-looking win, her third lifetime. The filly raced keenly for Jason Leacock tracking a decent pace set by the speedier Benjaman, before cruising by the leader two and a half furlongs out. Despite feeling some pressure in the run up to the line, she had sufficient gas left to get home a couple lengths clear of the nearest rival. That rival was Inherit The Wind, a fairly consistent horse, but only at finding at least one going better than he is in the end. Though still last in the early stages, he wasn’t far off and improved to race in mid-division much earlier than normal. The American-bred seven year old was still unable to produce enough to peg back the winner. Benjaman took a little longer than is normally the case to find the front end, but went about five lengths clear when he finally did so. The gelding’s speed eventually died a natural death turning for home and he just held on for third, decisively beaten by better horses. Opportunity Knocks was among the back-markers for the first half, and made ground to the leaders when pushed along by Kenny John. He doesn’t have much acceleration to offer and ran on at one pace in the final furlong. Fire Hill was one of the fancied ones beforehand but ran disappointingly. The diminutive filly was well back early and had too much to do to catch those ahead. [ROG]

Comments:
The second leg of the Triple Crown and the last step before the Derby was robbed of considerable interest with the scratching of leading three year old filly Heaven Sent who was reportedly suffering from stomach ulcers during the week. The real story though or at least the big issue was whether leading three year old AREUTALKINTOME could win the event, and affirmatively answer the question of stamina, being tested for the first time over a distance of ground farther than he’s ever ventured. It was clear from early the colt’s dislike for being rated, a tactic that was his only hope of properly seeing out the nine furlongs; and the rider’s job was not made easier since the colt may have been quite fresh, having not raced since April when he lifted the Guineas. It was made even more difficult by La Padrino (alleged pacesetter for the bettors’ second fancy Don Portalsonny) whose dual purpose included forcing the top-rated three year old into a furious early battle. As remarkable as it was for jockey Rico Walcott to win that battle of relaxing his charge amidst being bounced and roughly treated in the first two panels, it was even more extraordinary that the colt would win after throwing his head in disgust so much early on in the contest. It takes a really exceptional individual to endure such a physical pounding early on, and still pulverize the opposition in the manner that was to soon follow. La Padrino is not by any means a slow horse, and has demonstrated the ability to carry his speed for at least five furlongs, yet the gelding was spent after just three furlongs of heckling the winner! Show Me The Money picked up the running and kept up the frantic pace as La Padrino shut down, ensuring the race was a true test. It was only then that AREUTALKINTOME lowered his head and relaxed, much to the detriment of his foes. He set tongues wagging and left the entire track in awe with his dazzling performance, galloping on to further Classic glory by a long-looking six lengths and feeling the stick only once after the wraps were taken off two and a half furlongs out. Don Portalsonny had every chance of spoiling things for the winner, but came up short again. He was up on the pace early but lost some ground when steadied around the slippery Paddock Bend. Even with three furlongs to run and a clear view of the front just two and a half lengths ahead of his position, the gelding still couldn’t gain on the runaway winner. Erados hinted improvement and surprised many with a shocking defeat of Don Portalsonny on their last meeting, and came within a length and a half of beating him again this time on even terms. He seems to be getting better as the distances increase, and the additional furlong of the Derby at least on pedigree should not harm the Edward Walcott trainee. Sweet Enough seldom runs a bad race and in the absence of Heaven Sent again led the fillies home. She again broke badly and lost some ground but quickly asserted herself to join in the early hunt for a good position. Once settled into a nice cruising speed (albeit much farther off the pace that usual), the gutsy bay crept her way through the pack and turned for the judge heading all but the winner, but tired considerably in the run up to the line. Another good run, yet nothing matched the winner’s effort. What’s frightening and so far exciting is that we are yet to see how good this son of Zwick really is, as he even carried 1lb over his allotted weight in victory. Walcott exuded confidence (perhaps still feeling the unleashed power under him), when still not popping the question to his mount while the others were flat to the boards and scrubbing for what would ultimately be the minor ends of the purse. In the aftermath of his bloodbath, likely Derby entrants must be further dumbfounded. What now must they do? They allowed him to sail early with the expectation that he’d stop, but he didn’t. They sent out teasers to run him ragged and he won even further. Perhaps all that’s left is for them to hope for some misfortune to befall their nemesis for some glimmer of hope to defeat him; but in the meantime his rapidly growing fan club will sit in anticipation of their Champion’s date with the Derby, and the potential elevation to even higher echelons of turf history to be anointed a new Triple Crown hero. Comments:
After a short drought over the longer journeys, the Janak gelding GUDFRIDIE made a successful return to winning at the shorter 1100 metres, seizing the advantage once clear of the hill to score a decent win. It wasn’t the smoothest of runs as the Hayden Nicholls-trained gelding was very slow in leaving the gate, but swiftly recovered and snuck his way through to a more favourable position. He was obviously quite happy in the less than ideal ground, covering the field with surprising ease through a field that included relatively reputable speedsters. Sprinting was not thought to be his forte, but this very useful effort suggests it’s certainly not beyond his ability, as he had it all sewn up once hitting the front over two furlongs out. Neither Charleston nor Aye Aye Capitane could do enough to separate themselves at the wire with the pair dead-heating for second. The former was as usual out-paced and among the trailing bunch after a furlong, and improved just marginally when the rhythm increased at the three. Once in the stretch though, he found plenty under a vigorous ride on the outside, and bettered all but the winner and joint runner-up. Aye Aye Capitane got little in the form of a breather in this one, hard ridden early to keep position going down the back stretch. He was soon set alight again clearing the hill, and did see considerable daylight when switched to the outer but was too spent by then to catch the winner. What A Splash was fastest away and tried to make all, a feat that was so much easier when on her best form – form that has left the mare since September last year. She ran a respectable race along the inside, and kept on well in-spite of being caught by the faster finishing group that beat her. Deal Or No Deal normally leads the march leaving the gate but was never able to get away alone up front. She was relegated to sit just behind the leaders until turning for the judge when offered a seam, but couldn’t produce the finishing kick to take advantage of it – perhaps anchored by the high-weight she shouldered. Bold Ballad too enjoys a place at the head of things, but the outside draw and a wayward start put an end to that plan from early. Not asked to do too much early, she found herself in with a big chance at the top of the lane, but with no room to run her effort was thwarted and she was soon eased down. [ROG]

Comments:
With Daylight Express back on ice and Apostle scratched, the Sir David Seale owned PREACH TO ME reaffirmed his appreciation for the going with a commanding win over six others in the 7.8-furlong handicap. He was much sharper today and that found him close up early to a fairly demanding gallop set by Kingdora. He got a dream run and snuck through along the inside rail just after the four, then once committed at the mile pole and finally shaken up by jockey Chris Husbands to go on, the contest was over. The flashy colt had it settled in a few strides and won well clear of Messi, again quickening up beautifully down the lane reminiscent of his last win. Messi was also the one to follow him home on that occasion, and beaten by 2½ lengths. Today the weight conditions were almost identical and although the margin was 3 lengths this time, the result suggests that little has changed since then. Messi seemed to be struggling a bit in the softer ground and was soon pushed along to chase all but the delinquent Compton Fields. There was very little gain when he was pressed for more, but he stuck to his guns well and was able to get past beaten horses for the silver medal spot. Lethal Liesel though still finishing on the board, was somewhat disappointing. She as usual settled in behind the leaders and waited for the speed to fold. With the winner again getting first run, she lost all hope of an effective response to his acceleration and her change of pace coupled with not changing leads was not enough to fend off Messi in the run to the line. Spicey Tiger was also held up in the rear and found himself with too much to do against the more in-form horses ahead of him. It’s been a while since his last win and he may now need a slight drop before venturing that way again. The win gave talented jockey Husbands another reason to celebrate on the day (it was his birthday), and offered some consolation for the scratching of Heaven Sent earlier in the day. [ROG]

Comments:
A full field of relatively unexposed maidens lined up for this 5 furlong handicap sprint, and though not endowed with any potential stars it still produced a decent win by the once raced ZALTARR. The ugly thing about the lanky gelding’s win would have to be that the winner’s saddle slipped badly from the gate, and the rider’s effort in getting home safely furthermore winning must be commended. Sent off at 6/1 he broke willingly for Bishop before travelling well in disputing the lead with the very speedy Joe Grimes. He quickened in the last furlong and a half and held off a fast finishing Tyson for the maiden win. Perhaps he would’ve won easier had the mishap not occurred and the rider not prevented from applying the “full treatment”. Last Dream too had one previous start like most of the others entered, and had very little in that outing to recommend him. He didn’t display any fire-works here but came with a rush on the rail close home to just miss for the win. Tyson was slowly away but caught up to be prominently placed within a couple of furlongs. He hit his best stride two furlongs out and came to the turn looking like a winner. He was bearing down when tiring and under pressure to get by the winner and lost some momentum when making contact with that horse half a furlong from the line, but that occurrence did little to affect the result. Joe Grimes looks like he can be a useful sprinting individual once finding his best in the right hands. He gave a much better effort here than in two previous starts as a two year old, where he showed similar speed but bolted towards the outside rail. There may be some support for the point that he would’ve likely gone closer with more help from the saddle. On the basis of this effort, it shouldn’t be surprising if the Richard Deane-trained animal wins a similar maiden in short order. [ROG]

Comments:
A fairly competitive handicap with some creditable sprinters would close the day’s exciting programme. The result would be a pleasing one for the connections of the well-bred RATATAT, who seems set on further progression up the ratings list. Again brisk from the gate, he showed the field through the first three and half furlongs then briefly lost the advantage shortly after jockey Trotman lost his stirrup at the critical two furlong marker. He did well to regain his footing while keeping the gelding together and the son of Boristenes quickened appreciably when finally pressed for a serious effort a furlong out. In the style of a very decent horse, he forced his way again to the fore close home, and was much the best to still win going away. Fully Loaded raced in mid-pack just inside the three. She made a likeable bid to lead turning for home, but was unable to hold off the winner once he got going. Sabria Light has been off her best form since winning back in December. She raced behind the leader until turning for home when finally seeing daylight to make a run. Even with the space to run through however, the Liz Deane-trained filly was not going on enough to get by the first two. Still a good run under 131lbs and she should be back in the thick of things if this form can be reproduced. Super Dancer was thought to be one of the horses to beat and was looking for a hat-trick of wins in this one. She was surprisingly slowly away, and was held up in the back by Bishop. She made a run at the leaders over two furlongs out, and was switched to the outside for the final furlong. The attractive bay mare finished well but just couldn’t gain on the horses ahead. The winner’s run though was a favourable double on the day for a trainer/jockey combination that has been weathering lean times of recent. The manner of both victories is a testament to the toughness of his charges when at their best, as both recovered from near catastrophes to score gamely. [ROG] |
