Comments:

The day’s racing got off to a lackluster start with favorite STORM WARNING making all of the running to account for seven victims in this poor handicap sprint. The Blast Of Storm filly easily claimed the lead leaving the gate, and eclipsed her rivals readily once finally asked by jockey Anderson Ward for a serious effort after turning for home, running out an easy winner in the end. Tom Dooley’s attempt to apply pressure to the winner when the chips were down was only moderate, yet he comfortably separated himself from the lower rated horses behind, though the journey was shorter than his optimum. This start marked the first for Cove Bay, after a brief break due to injury and the chestnut filly ran creditably until losing her chance in the run home, obviously coming up short in the fitness department. Not much can be said of the others, with only Lady Patrick and Enchanted Lake ever being in a striking position at any point in the race.  [ROG]

Comments:

After a slow and unimpressive start to his racing career, the highly regarded LION KING finally made this start count with a useful effort in the 9-furlong contest. He looked quite backward for those early engagements, but turned up today a much improved horse physically, and the result manifested itself as such. Prominent among the headliners for the first ¾-mile, the son of Lion Heart then conceded the lead to favourite Trilok at the 3, before re-engaging that foe turning for the judge. Though still running green when pressed initially, the Edward Walcott-trained colt continued steadily in the final two panels to eventually wear down the idling runner-up in mid-stretch for a popular maiden win. It’s quite pleasing to finally see another winner that was bred in the US but foaled on our shores, a practice that has produced disappointing results to date. LION KING is from the first crop of leading North American Sire of Stakes Winners Lion Heart, and his progress will be watched closely as further improvement is expected. Trilok now has successive good efforts following this run, but should’ve justified the support of his backers and soundly beaten this bunch if he’s to be a serious Classic contender. Blinkers were off again today, and he was held up among the trailing group early on, giving the majority a detrimental head-start while conceding weight all around. He looked all over a winner when swooping by on the outside of horses 2½ furlongs out, but conceded the advantage to a more willing horse once straightened up for the run in. Double Dagger was racing in tandem with Trilok early, and was still within striking position at the top of the hill when squeezed for room between and behind horses once asked for a run. He would’ve certainly been closer had it not been for that mishap, but was also eased once it was no longer possible to head the first two. He also conceded weight to most including the winner, who got away at odds of 7-1. Major Sam was keen early and sat just behind the leaders for the first half. He was caught flat-footed as the tempo increased four furlongs and though finishing creditably and catching Que Pasa on the line, the first three home were already long assured.  [ROG]

Comments:

It looks as if each time the Lord Michael-Clifton Racing pair of ALL ABOARD and La Padrino meet, the others in the field are racing for the lower placings. This contest again offered a similar outcome as the two greys again occupied the first two slots, with ALL ABOARD being the one to steal the spotlight with a very impressive run. The son of Captain Charlie has clearly progressed ahead of his stable companion, evidenced by a 6½-slaughtering of him at level weights in the handicap. The matter was virtually settled from the gate, when the Robert Peirce-trained gelding shot from the outside gate and stamped his authority forthwith. It was from then a one-horse race and the winner scampered home having been ridden right out at the distance. La Padrino was left standing in awe at the winner’s flawless performance, failing to land a blow at any point except to those struggling behind him. Claims of ALL ABOARD being “pulled” a few starts ago in almost identical conditions, so as to allow him a win, might have been finally laid to rest now with the decisive result. Nonetheless, he was again better than the rest and should find winning form again soon. Unreal scraped home for a maiden win last time out, and was stepping up in company slightly with an 8lb concession in the weights. She found herself in a decent slot early, but just didn’t have the acceleration to remain a major threat. Millennium Mile found daylight late, but was still not able to improve her position when it mattered. With no one of this calibre able to effectively test the winner, one may need to source more worthy opposition from higher in the ratings for the gelding.  [ROG]

Comments:

Since being fully taken over by owner Sir Charles Williams, the Jamaican-bred mare TOP LADY has again struck very satisfying form culminating here with a likeable win over nine furlongs. Stalking the pace until clear of the hill, the honest mare took some time to find her best stride, never hitting the front until a furlong out. She kept to her work well and maintained the winning margin under a full drive from jockey Anderson Trotman. The talented Hawayan Tropic again showed signs of her dislike for starting, and it resulted in her occupying last place early on. She caught them within a furlong however, but was still probably further back than the team would’ve liked. Few people would’ve given her much of a chance after such a dismal jump, but nothing was travelling better than she was when asked the question by jockey Chris Husbands. She continued to lay herself out beautifully upon entering the stretch, but began to shorten close home, not surprising after the ground she made up following the slow start. Three year old Tenpins Dancer was also stalking the leaders and in fact shadowed the winner for a long way. Luck was not on his side on this occasion as it was for a lack of racing room when the heat was turned up that he was unable to get closer. Unfortunately he was only presented with a seam to run through after pace-setter Washbrook threw in the towel a furlong out, but was gaining ground swiftly once clear. There’s much to like about his more recent form, and as he continues to beef up and mature, his progress will be closely monitored especially as a four year old next year. I’mjusttoomuch ran a respectable race albeit carrying only 109lbs and having made up ground after racing well off the dawdling early pace.  [ROG]

Comments:

The consistent bay mare KANON, found the winner’s enclosure for the fourth time in her career with this relatively easy win. Backed down to favouritism in the betting, the daughter of Janak found this group more to her liking. She bravely forced her way between horses on the turn and reported reporting home going away from the one-pacing Gudfridie. Gudfridie again cut out the early fractions before being collared by the winner on the home turn. As expected with this step down in opposition, he ran a satisfactory race though one-pacing for the final two furlongs. He’s somewhat of a tough campaigner and shouldn’t be too far off a win if he continues in this vein. Ratatat looked a worthy bet on the basis of a scorching run last time out over the minimum trip. He pulled hard early for Trotman, having been provoked by Gudfridie who was intent on the lead. The rider waited longer than usual to ask the gelding to go on, perhaps saving his mount to ensure he saw out the trip after using himself up early in affairs. He didn’t take the final turn well, but still appeared between horses again with a chance and, though keeping on well, just didn’t have enough to account for the first two. The first three are without doubt a notch above the rest in here as they (except Gudfridie) conceded weight to the entire field yet were well clear at the end.  [ROG]

Comments:

Two scratches at the declaration stage reduced what would’ve been an even more competitive race to a three-horse battle, and though the result was for the most part predictable, the contest proved an exciting affair. Turning for home the three were virtually in a line, some consolation for the small field that lined up. PEACEFUL ENVOY’s run of success stepped into another gear with yet another scintillating triumph and now boasts a solid beaver-trick. Handicapped for the score at 118lbs, he received 15lbs from Kingdora, clearly not enough to snag his impressive change of pace. In winning, the colt had to fight much harder to turn back his victim of last race-day Super Star, but claimed that scalp as well as that of Kingdora with something to spare. Super Star tried his hardest to deny the winner, briefly leading at the top of the lane and engaging the winner in a brief duel, before having his colours lowered again. Kingdora got a few cracks early in the running, perhaps to ensure a sharp pace and set things up for his stable companion. Surely it wasn’t necessary if that were the case, but jockey Ward hardly asked for much thereafter and he cantered home three lengths behind the first two.  [ROG]

Comments:

It had the looks of a very competitive event for a group of capable sprinters, but it produced a one-sided result for the talented TOTAL ECLIPSE, the second winner on the day for his trainer. The son of Moon Solitaire led from pillar to post, never allowing his rivals the chance to make an impression and winning by 2¾ despite tiring marginally towards the line. The chestnut turned for the judge with a commanding lead and a line of challengers in behind hoping to swallow him up; but the Nunes-trained runner sustained the gallop admirably under pressure and kept his flanks well clear of the onslaught. It was his first run since January 31st and that may be offered as a potential reason for any shortcomings on his part, but a useful effort nonetheless. The win provided a double on the day also for the jockey, who’s enterprising ride caused the winner to leave some pretty good sprinters in his wake, in a time just of a few clicks off the track record. Time D’or was thought to have a huge chance going into this one, and does deserve some respect for his effort today. He sat just off the leaders and along the rail, before suddenly switching to the outside for a bid and losing costly ground in the process. Not the type to really quicken sharply, he was just able to run down horses in the middle of the track, but was always well adrift of the runaway winner. Cash Boy chased the winner from his outside draw for most of the way, but was unable to find enough pace to gain on the leader. Only the runner-up managed to get by him close home, and his run here was welcomed as it was his highest finish in five previous starts. Body N Soul has been in generally disappointing form recently, obviously losing a step or two on her best form. She too lost position when hindered by Time D’or’s move but finished strongly widest of all to claim fourth money. The winner though should be climbing higher in the ratings following this run, and he’s sure to progress even further should he stay sound long enough.  [ROG]
