Analysis:

Undoubtedly a race to please the handicappers with a head and two short-heads separating the first four home, and the result being determined only by the last stride. The camera gave the verdict to the Anderson Ward trainee CAPTAIN SULLY, who gamely stayed on along the inside for his first win since December last year. Obviously benefiting from the 7lb claimer aboard, the winner turned around his sour form of recent with the exciting score, finding a second wind in deep stretch when seemingly beaten in the wake of the idling runner-up. 6/5 favourite Local Speed looked like he would've turned it into a procession for the final quarter mile, but failed to quicken clear when finally asked for maximum effort by Trotman. He again left the rail when under pressure from behind and did enough to just hold for second, despite not finding a change of pace. To his credit, he conceded from 8 to 8lbs to the field, and this alone speaks to the quality of his effort and ability when compared to this bunch. Between The Sheiks carried lots of money as well, and represented his supporters with much fervour. He found plenty when handed the full treatment late in affairs, but may've inched a bit closer had he not been slightly inconvenienced by the runner-up when that horse was edging left just under a furlong out. Atomic Bomb seems to now have the hang of things, with this run being his second successive one worthy of mention. He too was closing steadily on the leaders, after giving them a healthy advantage early on. The colt gave a good account of himself considering that he was 3lbs higher in the handicap than two of the three who narrowly beat him.   [ROG]

Analysis:

This contest was not on the same competitive level as the first, and turned into a romp for the winner who was registering her second straight success for trainer Boston John. SWEET HARMONY readily defied the top weight in the handicap, accelerating emphatically off a dawdling pace to settle the outcome from as much as two furlongs out. The winner was fully in control towards the end, and pulled well clear of the runner-up Zenyatta before being let down by rider Kenny John. The Saffie Joseph Jnr.-trained Zenyatta ran her best race thus far, just four starts into her career. She had no chance with the winner once that horse picked up the running, but easily accounted for the others; undoubtedly a satisfying effort for a bleeder at the trip. Herecomeshanna gained her highest place here as well, but is obviously not of the same class as the first pair home, as she was soundly beaten while handed lots of weight in the handicap.   [ROG]

Analysis:

The highly-fancied WHO'S CALLING lived up to her popularity in the betting when decisively trouncing the poor opposition in this handicap sprint. Despite handing the field lumps of weight, the daughter of Wild Escapade put the result to bed with some degree of authority in the final panel, needing only to be shown the way home to assure the win. Though the competition may not have been the strongest, she was clearly not inconvenienced by being placed closer to the pace following a more aggressive ride from the gates. Hypa Cat was the best of the others, but the seven-year-old mare was never really able to put a dent in the winner's margin. Lady Patrick did well to rally from back in last, but still could do no better than scrape a spot on the podium in this the lowest class.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Not a contest with much depth to mention, but the result finally produced a visit to winner's row for the four-year-old filly SWEET AND SOUR, after twenty earlier tries. Initially thought to be disadvantaged in this company, the winner was always travelling well for jockey Husbands. She picked up the running in short order when shown daylight to the inner of the retreating pace-maker, and scampered away smartly for an authoritative maiden win. Country Dance ran her best race to date, perhaps benefiting from the experience of her three previous starts along with the application of blinkers which clearly sharpened her focus. The solidly-made daughter of Forty Mile now looks prepared to embark on at least a useful career should this upward trend continue. Fancied Desert Orchid was quite unlucky when having her progress hampered at a critical stage in the running. She's been in quite decent form recently, and in the final analysis should perhaps not be penalised heavily by the punters for this run in light of the troubled passage she experienced.   [ROG]

Analysis:

This event was generally a poor maiden affair, dominated from shortly after the start by the rangy-looking colt GONE PROSPECTING who trotted up for trainer Liz Deane and owner Aysha Syndicate - their second similar win on the day. His facile domination of these maidens was quite frankly an embarrassment to the opposition, none of whom at any point forced jockey Samuel to pop a serious question to his charge. The colt obliged in the pace-making role then waltzed home untested, having turned the contest into a bit more than a morning breeze with a following of discouraged mortals in his wake. The effort was reminiscent of a one in a similar contest last year, in which the high-class Show Me The Money provided an almost identical showing. Though this fellow is hardly of the same calibre (to this point), he's sure to be effective against much better than today's opposition at a similar trip or even further. It was eight long-looking lengths back to an all-out St. Winifred who easily accounted for the others in what looked like a separate race. Wild Dani lost quite a lot of ground at the start, and deserves some credit for her finishing position despite claiming only beaten horses late.   [ROG]

Analysis:

An average renewal to the Fillies' Guineas, with the finish virtually dominated by the in-form Melrose Racing stable. The result was generally true to form, at least with the first four home being the "form horses" in the event. LEAVE IT TO ME in grittily denying stable-mate Amanyara a second Classic for the season, reversed two consecutive defeats by that horse this term with a game return to winning ways. Now triumphant in four of seven starts, the joint leading three year old filly became the second Guineas winner for her team; and in doing so displayed the qualities consistent with that of a horse likely to appreciate the added distance of the main targets this summer. The brilliant Amanyara was not disgraced despite the defeat, but now has even more to prove next time out. The filly quickened her gait nicely in the stretch as jockey Samuel delivered a couple of strokes, but was forced to dig deeper on asking when the menacing winner failed to go down willingly. That she failed to see off the determined winner after having every chance to do so turning for home, lends some credence to beliefs that she'd be hard-pressed to stay the additional two furlongs of the Derby. Time will tell. The stoutly-bred Sea Gypsy again raced with much promise, proving her form of last outing to be no fluke. The Chally Jones trained bay was kept off the rail virtually throughout, and found herself with four horses to her inside when committed to the task by John three furlongs out. She's another expected to have a greater say in the result as the distances increase, though this effort alone confirms she's capable of beating these even at the local mile. It took Outeniqua a couple of furlongs to settle, finally losing the undesirable fight for her head to Trotman at that point. This was likely the cause of her subsequent undoing as she was relatively flat when asked to stretch, though not badly beaten in the end. Surely this will need to change as she ventures a furlong further in the Midsummer Classic in a month's time.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Another reason for the handicappers to gloat as the first six runners across the line had just three lengths between them. The camera was called upon to separate the first two, and it showed that the Boston John filly JANAKI had got there in a flurry of a finish to score her fifth lifetime. The smallish bay had plenty to find at the furlong marker but was good for it, and got to the tear away pace-setter at the death; the line coming just in-time to keep her safe from the brilliant stretch run of second place-getter Zoom. The winner is again heading in the right direction, and her upward mobility could see her entered for a big sprint contest in the near future. Prior to this, Zoom had done his best work over nine and ten furlongs, and as such it came as a shock that he'd be even entered in this contest with any expectations of the effort he was about to turn in. In the process the five year old accounted for horses who'd (at the trip) devour most horses in training today - and this as the third high-weight in the handicap. Closing remorselessly from rear, he was forced to check about 75 metres from the line, yet still found another gear late when pressed. Many would agree that his run was quite deserving of the win, especially considering that he gave a respected sprinter the calibre of JANAKI a solid 13lbs. The English-bred Azwa had no excuses really as she'd cruised around three to four lengths clear with little fuss three-eights of a mile out. She was nursed along until just turning for home, but the healthy advantage she enjoyed was chewed into by the winner and runner-up; the pole always to far away despite her best efforts.

Meanwhile, winning trainer Boston John continued to enjoy further success today landing two wins on the card, following a handsome treble at the last meeting.   [ROG]

Analysis:

American-bred filly KUDAM continued her best form when making every pole a winning one in the day's final handicap sprint. Now victorious in two of her last four, the Luther Miller filly's solid form continues since changing yards earlier this year. In customary fashion she readily took the advantage leaving the inside gate, and ran most of the opposition ragged through the first four furlongs. The only threat to loom came when the Simpson-trainee weakened close home, as a last ditch effort by Bold Ballad came up just short of adequate to change the outcome. Bold Ballad kept the winner directly in her cross hairs for most of the way, until edging out to issue a challenge inside the final furlong. Slammin N' Jammin made some headway along the inside turning for home, but finished-up fairly evenly behind the winner. The run of the race though must have come from debutante Essien for trainer Andrew Nunes. The strapping grey son of Monarchos turned in for the run home stone cold last, but stuck steadily to the task and made up remarkable ground late. He looks a promising sort and will likely be a better animal next time out should the distance be more in his favour.   [ROG]
