Comments: Two well-beaten favorites got the day’s racing off to a surprising start in this first race, with 12-1 outsider LETHAL LIESEL conquering a C3 and Lower bunch on ground that she was rumoured to dislike. She was unhurried early by K. John and cantered behind the leaders for the first 5 furlongs, before making a move that would eventually wear down a stubborn Wash Brook in the final furlong. Wash Brook tried to make all with favourite Aquarius Star (who threw in the towel with 2 furlongs to run) forcing the pace at his flank, but found the winner had too much left in the end. Third place-getter Top Lady ran an improved race here, following a series of poor efforts in recent times, but failed to get by the runner-up in the last furlong. Spicey Tiger who followed her home, was not travelling comfortably after a couple of furlongs and was pushed along to keep his position. His failed effort for the lead turning for home caused him to be 4 horses wide, and he ran on at one pace making little progress in reducing the advantage the first two eventually had at the finish.

Comments: With no true pace-setter here, no one was particularly keen on dictating the early fractions, or perhaps they were but did so with less enthusiasm than normal. The result was still somewhat predictable with the improving filly AISLING obliging to break her maiden in encouraging fashion. She looked quite sharp in the saddling stall and possibly won a lot of support there. Jockey Trotman sat quite confidently along the rail and on the heels of the leading trio, then set alight the daughter of Blast Of Storm 3 furlongs from home. Her move was met by some stiff resistance in the closing stages from Gin For Me, but she was just too tough in the end and won perhaps easier than the ¾ length suggested. Gin For Me was among the fancied few after a game run two weeks ago against a slightly tougher bunch. She again received weight all around and ran creditably to be second best yet again. Jockey Richard Lunan on favourite Bramstoker perhaps sensed the lackluster early gallop and pressed on with it five furlongs into the race, slipping the field by some 3 lengths going over the hill. This move into the rising ground may’ve been his undoing as he was unable to hold off the first two in the final furlong. Like the winner, Minuet was also having her 3rd outing and ran a much improved race coming from off the slow pace to finish fourth, albeit still 5½ lengths adrift of the Nunes-trained winner, who looks sure to improve from this run.

Comments: This was a good run from SUPER DANCER who was revisiting the winner’s enclosure following a string of dismal efforts. Returning to her preferred distance of 5½ furlongs (unlike her siblings who stay much further) she gave a gutsy effort to get up in the dying stages to catch the fleet-footed runner-up for the win. This must have given her connections even more confidence for later with her full sister slated to line up for a Grade 2 contest in race 8. Drawn 12 and going 1100 meters at the Garrison is not where most like to be, but after a furlong had been run SUPER DANCER was already in third just off the heels of Family Affair who won the lead easily from the gate. The diminutive Family Affair made a race of it throughout and was just shortening when being nabbed in the final strides by the winner. Inherit The Wind is usually slow into stride and with the top weight of 132lbs he was given a positive warm up by the rider before being loaded. He was allowed to saunter along at the back for the first 2 furlongs and gave the field a sizeable advantage. After an interrupted run that included a stumble and being squeezed for room a furlong and a half out, he recovered quickly to just miss at the post. All in all it turned out to be a fairly competitive handicap with five horses coming to the line virtually together.

Comments: For one reason or another, it’s not often that 3yo creole’s compete against furthermore defeat their imported counterparts, however this year’s Realtors Limited Trophy would fall to one of locally-bred horses. It was obviously not the crème de la crème for either category, but the result was still well received as ATHENA came from last to easily claim the scalps of her 5 rivals. She’s not built like the typical sprinter and has very little speed from the gate, but even her rider losing his stirrup as she forced between horses a furlong from home was not enough to change the outcome. Bird Watch was held well off the early gallop as well, and offered a sustained run along the rail but had no answer for the winner’s final furlong surge. Dancing Rose gave a good effort against this bunch too, having been tracking the leaders she swung for home 3-wide, but was also inadequate in her effort to hold off the winner. Magic Money won the jump from the gate as usual, and was kept honest by the heavily weighted Chelseabit. The former stumbled badly about 2 furlongs out, failed to take the corner well then lost momentum, putting an end to her chances as she cantered home a distant last. Chelseabit was heavily eased at the top of the stretch when not going on, and by then the pace they’d set had already beat a path for the closers to finish.

Comments: In winning this handicap, SHY BOY registered his sixth lifetime win and second on the day for his trainer. Carrying the high-weight of 128lbs, the 8 year old bleeder benefitted from a change in tactics and was much the best in the end. He shot from the gates in his customary fashion, but remained handy when quickly swallowed up by two younger adversaries in Deal Or Nodeal and Johnny Sad Boy. Positions remained unchanged for the most part until the 2f pole, when the gelding was asked a question by young Kenny John. His response was immediate and within another 100m he had the leaders covered thanks in part to an opening on the inside rail. Deal Or Nodeal (carrying 18lbs more today than she did when winning easily last time out) attempted to rally but was collared for 2nd in the closing stages by a fast finishing Charleston. Charleston was badly outpaced for the first 3 furlongs, but saved a lot of ground along the inside rail and perhaps was the only one travelling faster than the winner in the critical stages. He’s had some problems and is steadily taking to his racing, so one could expect enough improvement for him to win soon.

Comments: All Aboard like many of the horses in Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing silks has been showing a recent trend of considerable physical and racing improvement since being handled by Peirce. He came into this contest with much better form than most, and was backed accordingly by the punters. Unfortunately the second call jockey for that stable (Lunan) had other plans and he guided a stubborn LA PADRINO to an exciting maiden triumph. The winner is an American-conceived, Barbadian–foaled horse, representing a trend that to this point yet to produce a local stakes winner. However, LA PADRINO after five previous tries was at least able to “break his duck” against this maiden bunch. It was evident from early that the favorite would have to call on everything he had to get by the winner today; as that gelding kept up the gallop once pressure was applied turning for home. All Aboard never found enough and, he and last year’s Champion jockey went under by ¾ length. After eleven outings (including 1 disqualification) All Aboard is still searching for his maiden victory, but that must be in the near future provided he can maintain efforts similar to this one. Third place finisher Opportunity Knocks has shown glimpses of ability at times and ran his best race to date here, though beaten 5 lengths by the first two. On the basis of this run he looks capable of beating a poor bunch or winning a maiden soon. Two newcomers started here as well (Billy the Kid and Fire Hill), and though neither of them made any impression they both appear to have some ability and could find a Comfort Zone when stretching out further. Another one to watch is Red Ball Express who had just one run before, back in September. She looked much lighter in body today, but obviously still needed the run for she backed out quickly once the pace quickened with a quarter mile left.

Another 1-2 finish and certain domination of both divisions of The Fosters Trophy (CR) sealed the Champion Trainer, and Champion Jockey of the day for Peirce and Lunan respectively. This time it was the fleet-footed MILLENNIUM MILE and Sweet And Sour who emulated their stable companions in the earlier half by outrunning from start to finish the eight opposing foes. Blinkered for the first time, MILLENNIUM MILE was hustled to the lead from the gate and was handy for most of the way when pressured by no one. She was asked to quicken turning for home and spurted away nicely to score eased down in the end, with none of her opponents able to land a blow at any point. Sweet And Sour who was receiving 10lbs from the winner, was well positioned early and kept to the rail until turning for home when she drifted into the middle of the track. The filly still ran on well and was clearly second-best on the day. The Andrew Nunes-trained Summer Star was having her second life-time run, following a ninth-place finish over a similar distance on Boxing Day. She has since grown a bit and looked much fitter for this outing, demonstrating the ability that she has shown in morning gallops. The grey was pushed along just behind the leaders, and saw daylight when Sweet And Sour went wide turning for home but was unable to quicken again. Trotman then eased her down once third place was assured. Raging hot favorite (and justifiably so) Trilok, was a huge disappointment though it is widely believed that he won’t be at his best over this short a trip. He was never allowed to settle by the swift pace, and was running towards the outside of horses when asked to improve his position going by the 2f pole. His acceleration was short-lived and he one-paced to fifth behind a late charging Tears Of The Sun, 7 lengths behind the 21-1 winner.

Comments: On paper it promised to be the most competitive affair for the three year olds with no less than four horses poised to figure prominently in the finish. The event was however, marred by consecutive incidents that spoiled the chances or true efforts of most of the field. Some patrons felt that the result was inevitable, but following an awful start the showdown between the island’s best three year olds failed to materialize. It turned into a one-horse domination by the judiciously backed AREUTALKINTOME who was notching up his third consecutive success, and first going further than 1100m. Zergar and Show Me The Money got the worst of the jump as the eventual winner and Sweet Enough both broke awkwardly and converged on the former two. Then just a few strides later, Dark Knight clipped heels with Sweet Enough and took a violent tumble that unseated his rider. This unsettled Charlie’s Angel, Silk N Satin, Orion and (for the second time) Show Me The Money who had already been shuffled back. In fact the only ones to emerged relatively unscathed after the first ½ furlong was eventual runner-up Don Portalsonny (who was drawn widest of the 10 runners) and AREUTALKINTOME who, once straightened up from the gate, used his awesome speed to sprint ahead going into the Paddock Bend. Quarter of a mile into the race he was already 10 lengths ahead of SWEET ENOUGH as if it were a 5 furlong sprint. Don Portalsonny, Sweet Enough and Heaven Sent slowly started cutting into that lead, though it was a monumental task that the son of Zwick had set his rivals. He appeared to be shortening slightly as you would expect after such enterprising tactics, but the damage was already done. Don Portalsonny who was also coming off back to back wins (both at the distance) ran another good race today, despite surprisingly subtle urgings from his rider. He is a full brother to Midsummer Classic winner Don Anglesonny and should be well suited to an additional furlong or two. Show Me The Money has been steadily improving since his late debut as a three year old on Valentine’s Day. He was stepping up in weight and company here, and despite that hazardous start the handsome colt handled himself well and could give his sire and connections Classic glory a bit later in the year. Trainer Robert Pierce appears to have a strong hand in the upcoming 3yo races with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers both demonstrating Classic-type ability behind a brilliant performance by the winner. AREUTALKINTOME earned $35,216.00 for the win, pushing his bank roll to over $70,000 from just five runs. It’s interesting to see how this colt handles a step up in distance, as his fractions on a track that was on average 1½ seconds on the slow side were nothing short of breath-taking for the distance. Perhaps we ought to be even more anxious to see the tactics employed with him as the three year old Classics approach.

Comments: With eleven “A” and “B” classified horses in training but less than a month after our most prestigious race for the best horses in training, this A & Lower event was deprived of quantity with just two horses from those groups taking entry - Kingdora, the recently dethroned “Sprint King” and a previous Gold Cup winner in the out of form Whiskey For Me. Also in the field however, was one of the most improved horses in training, the Pulpit colt PREACH TO ME. The chestnut has been a model of consistency during his 16-start career, but since late last year has been on an upward trend culminating first in a creditable 3rd place finish in the Gold Cup, and now this stylish win over a shorter trip. Though clearly not his best distance unless charging at a stiff pace, PREACH TO ME was dropped in behind to lead the second group 2½ lengths off honest fractions set by a hard pulling Bloumberg and Kingdora. Husbands was a picture of confidence as he merely shook the reins at his colt and covered the leaders effortlessly, sprinting emphatically in deep stretch to win going away. Messi was outpaced and pushed along as usual from the outset but consistent in his run at the leaders, easily going by all except the winner who was clearly much the best. This son of Good And Tough has run back into some respectable form, and should be visiting the winner’s enclosure again soon once he can maintain this long enough. Kingdora was shadowing the leader until that one folded, and then held the call briefly before being out-finished by the first two. He’ll most likely be campaigned at his preferred trip, since he fails to stay the 1570 meters unless he can get a soft lead and virtually canter for the first 5 furlongs. Whiskey For Me tracked the winner until passing the 4f pole, then applied more pressure going to the 2, but faded badly as the clip quickened and the first two really “set sail” for home. He may be past his best now, running below par and not placing in any of his last five outings.
