Analysis:
Leading juvenile filly of last year SPELLBOUND returned to competition a ready winner when trouncing this small field of inadequate three year olds. As the obvious choice in the betting, the diminutive chestnut held the call throughout and made light work of the contest, her first race since a shock defeat in December last year. Physically she hasn't developed much (if at all), but clearly still possesses the ability to outrun her counterparts impressively at the 1100-metre trip, even with 130lbs to shoulder. Jihad got closest to the winner, although the official one-length margin could be misleading in showing how ineffective he was against her. In receipt of 21lbs from the filly, he hardly made any serious impression after racing towards in last early on. Habibti who represents the same trainer as the runner-up, is also clearly inferior the winner, and will need much lesser company to finally break her maiden. [ROG]

Analysis:
A shock result in what looked on paper to be a three-horse affair involving potential "Classic" colts. Instead a not so fancied filly named DANCEBAK took the honours, showing plenty of grit to land a smart maiden win. The well-grown bay looked quite tough when wearing down the highly-touted runner-up in deep stretch, after he'd been virtually uncontested for most of the way. A fact that adds salt to the wound of Dance The Distance is that he was also conceded 5lbs by the winner, who'd gone to post a whopping 10lbs over-weight! An anticipated 8-10lbs swing in the weights from today's (for the Classics), could further enhance her chances of greater glory, as she'd be on the receiving end of weight from the boys. This is hardly an unreasonable assessment for a filly that is still on the improve considering what we saw today; unless of course they're all duds and in the same league. Dance The Distance carried his head awkwardly throughout, but raced keenly on the front end. He had no excuses here and would need to re-assert himself next time out if he's really the high-class horse most people think. Much to his credit he's just two starts into his career, and could only get better with time. Dakdada's vastly improved effort here may be the catalyst to indirectly imply that the field is only average, as he hadn't done anything prior to this suggesting that he's more than just a poor runner. He still looks rather backward though, but may've relished the extra distance as his pedigree suggests. Up The Ante was bet down to even-money in the market after a smart effort last time out against similar. He was decisively beaten today though, after exerting himself too much when racing back into contention quickly, following a stumble in the Paddock Bend. Still good enough for fourth and beaten under three and half lengths was decent enough, considering he continued at one pace only for the final quarter of a mile. One of two ways to read the form of this race really; either the surprise winner is a crack distaffer in the making, or the fancied fellows are not of genuine stakes quality. Either way, the picture of this year's Classics is still not yet clear, just weeks before the Triple Crown's first leg is set to run off. [ROG]

Analysis:
A workmanlike sort of win for LOCAL SPEED who broke his maiden here after five previous tries. Not a very exciting type, he does seem to be fairly tough and may develop into a fairly consistent campaigner. He does hold a nomination to the Guineas, and is sure to earn a slot there. Whether he can find a sufficient change of pace over a similar trip to handle the likes of Leave It To Me and company is yet to be seen, but his toughness could see him produce a respectable effort. Ivanovic surprised many in this her fourth start when leading from the off, and still looked pretty strong at the two furlong pole. She did enjoy an easy lead before the winner's late challenge, but looks to finally be on the improve and should be more effective next time out - even if campaigned at a shorter trip. Not a horse with much scope though, she may quickly find the limit to her ability which is probably no further than 7.8 furlongs. There were very high hopes for Dee Zee Vogel, who ran another decent race today despite a well-beaten third; but the colt broke down some four furlongs out and may never race again. [ROG]

Analysis:
Usual a fairly close and competitive contest, this year's biggest sprint didn't disappoint in that regard with barely a length and a half separating the first four horses home. The winner was never really in jeopardy of being caught, holding the opposition's assault at bay for the full distance under Canadian-based riding ace Patrick Husbands. It turned out to be a fairly straight-forward race for the six year old American-bred WHO'S CRUISING, who became the second successive horse to score consecutive wins in the Grade 1 sprint. There was not much form to go on leading up to this one, as he was seen out only once (November last year) since his desperate "head victory" in last year's race. Quite an impressive training feat for conditioner Liz Deane SCM, who brought the normally consistent gelding back to his best with perfect timing for this one. Old stager Sharp Impact was severely disadvantaged by the outside starting gate berth, and would probably have been a winner had "lady luck" been on his side. The now ten year old was always chasing the winner, and kept on well in the final panel despite unable to wear into that horse's lead. It was difficult to anticipate Bipin's chances here since he'd to this point done his best work over further. Blinkered again to enhance his concentration, the gelding found plenty for a big final furlong effort after meeting with trouble two furlongs from the judge. Track record holder Super Star chose the wrong day to not have a "flyer" from the gate as he normally does, though it really wasn't all his fault as the rider lost a stirrup leaving the box. He too was in hot pursuit of the leader throughout, but giving that brief head-start to his opposition would prove detrimental to his chances in the end. [ROG]

Analysis:
A pretty smart ride from apprentice Jalon Samuel when guiding DEAL OR NODEAL to a stylish fifth career win in a fairly competitive handicap. Normally happy to travel on or close to the pace, the five year old was settled well off the speed and behind a wall of foes who were more eager from the gate. The youngster was a picture of confidence as he watched the speed fold, then found a seam between horses in the stretch through which he urged the mare to make her assault. Having not done much to that point, she readily saw off the fast finishing place-getters and scored another stylish win for trainer Joseph. This was Uneverno's best effort since her debut win some nine starts ago. This is her second start since a five-month break late last year, and she could on the basis of this run easily find another win if campaigned in poorer company. Super Dancer now holds the enviable distinction of giving Champion Irish Jockey Johnny Murtagh his first ride in Barbados (and the Caribbean). Though not a winning one, it deserves worthy mention as she was a closing third from "out of the clouds". She was way out of it until pressed for a serious effort after five furlongs had been covered, and was still gaining appreciably on the leaders after being forced to go wide around a wall of mostly retreating horses. Double Dagger lost his best chance when short of a clear passage under two furlongs out, despite finding plenty along the inside when pressed late. For the winning jockey, this race assured a pleasing double on the card, as he was having his first day of assignments in the saddle since nursing a broken wrist for the last six to seven weeks. He wasted little time in returning to the winning form he left late last year, and looks set for continued improvement in his trade. [ROG]

Analysis:
Six year old mare WALK ON BY emphatically returned to the scene of her career highlight with an awesome romp in the year's biggest ten furlong stakes for older horses. In doing so she joins the brilliant Kabul as a dual winner in the event, but now also owns the largest winning margin; in addition to an enviable overall record in the race with a second-place finish last year. The mare's seven and three-quarter lengths romp came compliments of a superb ride by English jockey Darryl Holland, who opted to keep the pace honest when taking the advantage over five furlongs out. Such enterprising tactics are not uncommon with riders of this calibre, and took the heavy favourite and eventual runner-up Show Me The Money out of his game plan, virtually assuring the pending dismissal of the winner's seven other opponents. Show Me The Money came into this after a stakes-record win at a similar trip last time out, and was duly bet down to favouritism. The presence of a "rabbit" and the fully wound-up winner refused him an easy lead, and that surely put paid to his chances. The first two were 1-2 for the final five furlongs, and began to stretch the others who at one point seemed to be in a separate race. Border Secret came through to be the best of the rest, finding the leaders' advantage a bit too much to overcome. Perhaps a second runner-up spot in the race would've been hers had she she raced a bit closer than in last early on. The score was a dazzling double on the card (Deal Or Nodeal in the previous event) for the owner/trainer team of Attie, and his brother Saffie Joseph Jnr who deserves the world of praise for keeping his small yet talented stable in such fine form for so long. The mare's ill-fated dam Unchallenged also deserves credit, as she's responsible for both of these winners; the second time these horses have scored consecutive wins on a day's card. [ROG]

Analysis:
Finally decent form for the handy winner QUE PASA, who's now enjoying two straight wins; this one as easy as the first (last time out) albeit not by as great a margin. A last-minute jockey change made little difference to the outcome, at the miniature chestnut saw off her rivals quite nicely when quickening late in the affairs. She's sure to get a penalty for this second win, and will soon have to prove herself in a slightly higher class for trainer Kenneth Stanton. Tiger Cat's effort was a surprise one, with the mare having only poor form to show in at least seven starts prior to this. Wait and see if probably the best advice on her. Supercharge too had little to recommend outside of a fourth-place finish last time out. The one-time winner could find another triumph soon in similar company if this form holds. [ROG]

Analysis:
Arguably the most interesting Gold Cup since it's inception, and undoubtedly one of the finest fields, compliments of the presence of two major North American stakes winner featuring against the island's finest. The form held true (for the most part), and the lion's share of the spoils went to Canada's classy 2009 Connaught Cup winner STERWINS, who swooped late under that country's leading jockey Barbadian Patrick Husbands. In his customary laid back running style, the grey/roan gelding rallied from well back to catch another high-class North American entrant at the death in the nine furlong test of champions. He'd been campaigning with reasonable success in major stakes throughout his career, with the most recent notable effort being a close third to Champion mare Ventura in last October's record-breaking Woodbine Mile. Despite this, he was still sent off at a generous 3/1 in the betting, perhaps reflecting the doubts circulating before about his running style's usual ineffectiveness on the tight Garrison circuit. That was quickly proven to be less troubling than first thought when the Canadian was still cruising a bit more than a furlong out, with all others flat to the board. Husbands lost his whip just after the furlong marker, but clearly had little use for it as his fellow's sharp final panel was enough to hack into Bribon's lead and assure victory in the Eastern Caribbean's most prestigious race. Although the finish was close, it was clear that the winner had plenty in hand; the ease with which he won was almost embarrassing and painful as it was impressive. This was certainly jockey Husbands highlight on the day, having earlier lifted one of the other two Stakes on the card. He returned to the winner's row in absolute jubilation, continuing the celebrations he started as much as four or five strides before the line. Also to note, the win elevated the Eugene & Laura Melnyk to the ranks of "equine millionaire", an accolade earned by so few. 2009 Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap ("Met Mile") winner Bribon represented his new connections respectably, and truly ran like the North American Grade 1 horse he is. He too came in here off fine form, with quality efforts in his last five starts (including three Grade 1's and a Grade 3) among some of the best company in North America. His worst run in that period was a fifth in the aforementioned Woodbine Mile, a "short-head" behind STERWINS; and so again going under by a narrow margin to that horse in a Grade 1. After surging past long-time leader Apostle, Irish Champion jockey Johnny Murtagh handed the chestnut the full treatment once straightening up and he pulled well clear of that horse. The son of Mark Of Esteem wasn't stopping but, unfortunate for him, the winner still had a furlong to uncoil and a clear path through which to do it. His effort may've been inadequate for the win here, but he clearly ran to a level consistent with his most recent form and should continue to do well when back in his homeland. Creole Champion Apostle is due many superlatives for his game showing against these invaders, and deservingly returned to the unsaddling area to a rousing round of applause. The front-running chestnut had most of them off their feet from very early in the contest, and was simply outclassed by millions of US dollars in horse flesh. Having to work a bit more than normal for the early lead didn't help either, but it served to give an indication of the creole's toughness as he was the only horse that raced prominently from the gate, to last the nine furlongs with any pleasing degree of fight still left in them. John Brian too deserves some praise, turning up today in a big way at a trip over which he hasn't been highly successful. In fact it was only in this race two years go, that the colt showed any signs of ability to handle the distance. He'll probably continue his campaign for another year before retirement, and could finally win winner's row again soon if he can reproduce a similar effort and not be the rogue he's thought to be. Bad Action was the third American import for the race, and also had decent form behind him. Not of the same calibre as the other two, he didn't have much to say in the outcome due to traffic problems, but found a change of place late to claim a few scalps. Spicey Tiger was something of a surprise to finish where he did, though still hindered by the necessary acceleration he lacks. Triple Crown winner Areutalkintome's seventh place finish should in all fairness be written off as he'd been handled quite violently by the opposition when jostling for position on multiple occasions; the last straw being an inadvertent denial of a clear run when the chips were thrown down two furlongs out. All in all, a race that screams "horse racing at it's best" and a pleasing result for most despite the fact that the prize will be shipped north in a few days. Now in it's 29th year, the prestigious Gold Cup seems quite likely to maintain its international Group 1 status for a little while yet (despite the relatively small purse), with other high-class entries likely to follow these North Americans to local shores. One thing's for certain, local owners, breeders and buyers now have a clear means of determining what is now required to win this event, and should now refocus to lift the standard of racing (and breeding) in the country in order to be competitive at this level. *NO WINNERS; CARRIED OVER TO THE
NEXT RACEDAY - MARCH 27, 2010
Analysis:
Obviously not a race of the same quality, but four year old filly JANAKI did her best to reverse the normally anti-climatic nature of the race following the Gold Cup. The talented daughter of Janak ran her rivals ragged from the start, and sprinted away quite nicely towards the end in a manner consistent with the good horse she was always thought to be. Quite a different looking performance to what she'd been showing since her last win in July last year. Canduit Tuya is still in search for the maiden win, and her indifferent form is quite testing to follow. One key piece of information is that she's shown to be quite happy at the sprint distances, and this may be helpful in pin-pointing her chances next time out. Body N Soul now has three thirds in the last four tries, and this effort puts her over the $100,000 mark; a feat accomplished by so few in racing. [ROG] |
