Analysis:

Finally justifying some of the confidence placed in him by trainer Nunes, four year old TAJ MAHAL graduated from the maiden ranks with this decisive win over a poor group of similar maidens. Since recently taking over ownership of the gelding, Nunes seems to now have the chestnut's problems behind him, with this win coming after a decent runner-up effort just seven days prior; his only two starts since the acquisition. Following the winner home was Quality Time, another from the Nunes camp which has hit decent form of late. The filly was returning from an eight-month lay-off, and turned in this very encouraging run for the connections. She picked up and gained ground rapidly around two furlongs from home, and may've simply fell victim to a better horse on the day when unable to quicken past the winner. With this 1-2 in the opener, her trainer remains competitive at the head of the seasonal standings in both the "earnings" and "wins" categories, and this filly looks capable of adding more to his tally as the year progresses. It's difficult to find poorer company than this batch, and so Lady Patrick will need to step up if she's to finally win a race. Though not badly beaten here, the form is not very solid as she was in receipt of up to 9lbs from the ones that beat her home.   [ROG]

Analysis:

A brilliant return to winner's enclosure for the talented SHOW ME THE MONEY, who virtually dominated the contest when stretching the opposition from early in affairs. Now thriving as a four year old, the son of Kit Fisto stoutly reversed placings with his conqueror of last start, and gave new trainer (and his former jockey) Anderson Ward his second winner since taking up training duties. He still has plenty to find in order to place him favourably in the top bracket, but for the time being has the measure of this less illustrious group. Benefiting from a patient ride on the front-end, the colt was always travelling with purpose and looked like he'd win with plenty in hand when set alight by Latchman. With Walk On By for company, he was forced to set a somewhat head-knocking gallop, and expectedly tired a bit towards the end; doing just enough to repel a late-running Rocamadour for the win. The runner-up though was a bit unlucky, short of room and forced wider than he may've liked in conceding first run to the trail-blazing winner was enough to thwart what was conceivably another winning effort. The progressive bay found his best stride late and tightened the screws in the run up to the line, failing by a decreasing half of a length. Walk On By ensured a true test for the winner, harassing that colt through six and a half furlongs before giving way shortly thereafter. She looked quite beaten in the turn for the judge, but salvaged much respect when hanging around gamely in the final furlong to still hit the board. As good as she is on her day, a weight concession of any amount to her younger male foes is always a tough task, but one that she'll probably not have to face next time out.   [ROG]

Analysis:

At odds of 12/1, the Naz Issa-trained VANDROSS made every pole a winning one in this fairly competitive handicap over the "local mile" distance of 7.8 furlongs. Steered to victory by jockey Chris Husbands, the five year old virtually turned the contest into a sprint after allowed into a tepid early gallop by the other eight runners. Normally a very useful performer, the son of Boristenes was not in the best of form recently and this win is hopefully the start of his return to a more competitive campaign again. Favourite Uncle Jerry was initially short of pace when the leaders quickened just after the three-furlong marker. Though worked on from that point, the chestnut was unable to find a change of gear until hitting the furlong pole, and never found enough to anchor the winner. Consistently in the money, Bram Stoker turned in another honest effort for his connections, making his presence felt until failing in his rally for the lead inside the final furlong.

The win should also serve as a confidence-booster for the jockey, whose rapid return to competition from a life-threatening head injury was the subject of much talk and speculation recently.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Another front-running triumph on the day came in this handicap sprint, which turned into a relatively straight-forward victory for the favourite. An untidy affair towards the end, but the Boston John-trained FAMILY AFFAIR had done enough from the front to score her second career win. Spoiled only by wayward tactics a couple of strides from the line, the diminutive filly returned a ready winner, justifying the confidence placed in her by the betting public. She was always travelling better than most, having popped away from the inside berth in her customary fashion; with the late closing runner-up being the only one to threaten her dominance at any point in the sprint. That horse (Who's Calling), made her biggest impression late but was unlikely to catch the winner even if the sudden mishap close home had not come about. Unreal turned in another third-place effort, still the best she has done since turning in the maiden tag sometime last year.   [ROG]

Analysis:

As if to answer the challenge of her nearest rival in the championship, trainer Liz Deane provided a 1-2 finish in this contest, matching a similar feat by Nunes earlier in the day. It was a race consisting of maidens with generally poor form, lightly-raced or un-raced horses; and though the form may not be particularly solid, one can take a couple of potentially worthwhile animals to go forward. The once-raced SURINAN looked a very useful sprinter in the making when flying late to deny a game Indian Charlie. Favourite Indian Charlie looked the part in the prelims, a more mature individual than when last seen out back in December as a two year old. He too looks like a a horse with ability to be useful at the shorter trips, having carried the top weight in this one. Flying Rocket was starting for the first time for his new trainer Naz Issa but was up to his old antics again at the starting gate; forcing a slight delay to the start. He showed much more improvement on this occasion and ran his best race to date in third.   [ROG]

Analysis:

First-time blinkers did the trick for Margo Atkinson's TORNADE, who hacked up in impressive fashion to hand in his maiden ticket. The colt was very aggressive from the gate, and hit the front as far as five furlongs out; never looking like being caught thereafter. The margin of victory in no way accurately reflects the commanding manner of the triumph, and it's interesting to see how he progresses now with the confidence-boosting win and the change in equipment. Atomic Bomb ran perhaps his best race to date as well, staying on well towards the end to get the better of all but the winner. Jamaica Moon was a bit disappointing, as she was expected to make more of a race of it. However, the chestnut refused to settle early and was a handful for the first two and a half furlongs. Having done so much early on, the response when asked to stretch by Trotman was not immediate and she was given too many lengths to find in the final furlong.   [ROG]

*NO WINNERS; CARRIED OVER TO

THE NEXT RACEDAY - JUNE 5, 2010.

Analysis:

An anti-climatic ending to an otherwise decent day of racing, as four of the twelve entrants were withdrawn for one reason or another at the starting gate. The lengthy delay prior to this, involved reloading of the remaining eight runners, most of which had already been loaded for quite some time. Consequently, half of them seemingly "fell asleep" in the iron monster then started poorly, despite their riders' efforts to keep them focused. One to get away smartly was the eventual winner ST. NICHOLAS BAY, who soon had things his own way up front once disposing of the speedy Millennium Mile after covering just over a furlong. Representing a rare treble on the day for his trainer, the chestnut colt saw out the race nicely, except when noticeably shying from the whip in the final panel. Irish Thunder suffered another defeat and remains a maiden after sixteen runs. On the basis of this run, even the slightest drop in the handicap or company could see him finally win soon. Inherit The Wind rallied from well off the pace as usual, though never really a serious threat to the two principles.   [ROG]
