Comments:

The authenticity of the form she showed last time out was confirmed here with SUMMER STAR dismissing a group of seven to score a good maiden win. The Andrew Nunes-trained grey filly was having just her third lifetime run and on the basis of this performance one can expect even further improvement in the near future. Though not a very big horse, she was an eye-catcher in the preliminaries and her pending victory could’ve been anticipated. She jumped away from the gate evenly, but lacked the early juice to stay on par with the speed without being pushed along. Again beaten for pace 3 furlongs out, jockey Anderson Trotman applied light right-handed encouragement but the response he got was momentarily affected by a retreating Big Fred, who was having trouble maintaining his footing in the uneven spots. She still kept in touch with the leaders and once switched outside of horses for a clearer look, toughed her way past the Robert Peirce-trained pair of La Padrino and Millennium Mile to win obviously easier than the ¾ length suggested. From the look of things, she is likely to appreciate a step up in distance, and it’s a pity that an interrupted training schedule has cost her a justifiable place in the upcoming Fillies’ Guineas line-up. Nonetheless, the future remains encouraging for the three year old daughter of Moon Solitaire. La Padrino was tough as nails in the final ½ furlong, after logging the top impost in a speed duel upfront for most of the way. The run was consistent with his recent form, but the 12lbs he gave the winner was obviously a bit too much on the day, especially after not afforded the easy lead he is accustomed to. Silk N’ Satin warmed up for her date with the aforementioned fillies’ “mile Classic” with a reasonably good effort. She obviously disliked the shorter trip, evidenced by her rider being hard at work from a long way out to keep within striking distance from the front. She picked up only marginally in the final furlong but was good enough to finish just a length behind the winner. New starter Ocean Star undoubtedly needed the experience, breaking awkwardly and losing lots of ground to some pretty speedy horses. She finished well once straightening up for the run home and it looks like the ¾ paternal sister to Whataline could develop into a useful horse as time goes on.

Comments:

The Lack of an honest pace pretty much settled the result of this one from the gate, with CLASSIC BURST stealing the win from the front, virtually unchallenged throughout. The Jamaican-bred bay filly continues to be a good servant, having registered this third win in the last four starts. After likely front-runner Sunny Side missed the kick at the start with an awful break, the Victor Cheeseman-trained filly easily assumed command and slowed the pace to a bit more than a canter half-way through the distance. This effectively transformed the intended 9-furlong contest into a two-furlong sprint and none of the other seven runners could find enough change of pace to make a difference on the outcome. The winner was receiving 8lbs from the runner-up Batista, who issued an unsuccessful challenge as much as four furlongs from home to alter the leader’s plan. Although he suffered from a lack of speed when most needed due to the winner’s tactics, he again ran well, and a drop in the handicap could very well see him much closer. Positive tracked the leading group and saved ground on the rail which saw her poised to be a factor in the finish going to the four. She found a bit extra once pressed for more, but only enough to maintain third place. Tears Of The Sun was fancied to go much closer here but ran disappointingly after racing close behind the leader. Jockey Hibbert lost his stick at a critical stage but it’s doubtful whether that would’ve made much difference to his finish in the end.

Comments:

TENPINS DANCER got it right today following a dismal effort last time out against his three year old contemporaries, by just getting up close home to beat these older gallopers. Poised and waiting for a run behind the pace-setters until turning for home, the colt found a good stride along the inside rail in the last ½ furlong and capitalized on a visibly idling Messi just inside the distance. While Ward on Messi thought the fight was over after turning back Grace Chapel a furlong out, Kenny John kept the winner up to his work well and got the advantage in the last few strides for his second win of the day. Messi was blinkered today and it obviously sharpened his attitude in the first few panels. The pace wasn’t the strongest early on but stepped up markedly going towards the four, a change that in conjunction with the equipment adjustment obviously aided the recently beefed up colt. One is hard pressed to recall him ever being this keen in a race, and it’s likely this change will be a permanent one for the four year old. His defeat here was a bit hard to swallow though he gave so much weight to the winner, having won himself a reputation of being a tough ride especially in the latter stages. To his detriment, he instantaneously relaxed just a few jumps from the wire when Andy Ward put the stick away and had what would’ve been his fourth win stolen. Third place finisher Grace Chapel made a good-looking challenge two furlongs out, but the turn of foot got her only to the shoulder of Messi and no further. The effort can still be looked on as worthy, though she didn’t seem as keen early on as she did when beating a similar bunch on even terms; in light of this one could possibly discard this run as short of her best. The next one home was a tired-looking Proud Bajan who since returning to racing has continued to disappoint. The slow galloping four year old is yet to feature in a finish and unless his form changes drastically for the better, a win for him soon is unlikely.

Comments:

With success in the last two races, hot apprentice Kenny John ensured a rare hat trick on the day in a thrilling 3-horse finish. With only the same number of horses in the field of nine having ever placed third or higher in their career to date, and none having ever tasted victory, it was always hard to find a convincing winner in this competitive yet poor maiden; even with 100 metres to run. The first five home were each separated by less than ¾ length but the one to separate herself (albeit just barely) in the end was the Liz Deane-trained UNREAL. She was among the fastest into stride and breaking from the inside stall was able to command a good position early. Kept within striking distance of the trail-blazing Shall We Dance until turning for the judge, she switched towards the outside of her stable-companion for the run home. It took a strong ride from Kenny and every ounce of effort from the filly to stick her nose on the line in-front of the equally determined runner-up. Sir David Seale’s Shall We Dance was the one who had shown the most likeable form to this point, and as such came in at the top of the handicap. Considering her gutsy effort after screeching away from the field 600 metres out, one could surmise that perhaps with even 3lbs off with a capable apprentice, the result would’ve been reversed. Nonetheless the run was a pleasing one in which she didn’t pack it in three-quarters of the way through the distance, and furthermore found more in the finish to just be denied on what was a little more than a head-bob. One can only hope now that the small yet attractive filly would repeat the effort next time out and hopefully circumstances will be more in her favour then. Espiritu was second to last and ridden along with 3½ furlongs to go. She was ridden hard in the final furlong and just missed for the win, gaining ground with every stride as the line came closer. In fact it is conceivable that she could’ve won with a bit more ground to cover. Bert An’ Pete raced just ahead of Espiritu early on but took the inside route for the sprint to the finish. It was his best finish to date and hopefully he could finally find similar form again. Blast ‘M Charlie’s run here suggests improvement and offers further evidence of the weak field. He was beaten a total of 73½ lengths in his first three outings, and was obviously expected by most to be again soundly beaten. He however, refuted those beliefs and ran a much improved race weaving his way (albeit greenly) between beaten foes and finished strongly for fourth. He may still need some time to find winning form but is clearly not as far off as previously thought. It was a race that proved to be fairly accurately handicapped and in general, evenly contested.

Comments:

As expected QUEENDORA delivered a worthy performance to score an encouraging maiden win. Obviously suited by the extra ground today (compared to the sprint last night), she was forwardly placed on the heels of the pacesetter and was always going the best of the lot. Not called upon for a serious effort until just inside the mile pole, she kept steadily to her task and won by a long-looking length and a half. She’s likely to be supplemented to the Fillies’ Guineas next race-day and that will undoubtedly be her stiffest test thus far. Nonetheless she’s an improving filly and could assert herself well in the Classic. Trilok has been a bitter disappointment to his connections as he’s still searching for his first win. The colt ran better than his most recent efforts suggested, though it must be mentioned this wasn’t as strong a group as on those occasions. He appears to need a strong pair of hands behind him throughout, and despite carrying the top weight, was separated from the winner by just the necessary sex allowance and that was unlikely to have cost him the win. In any case he could be one to consider favorably next time out, especially if blinkers are re-applied. Double Dagger was equipped with the head-gear for the first time and was clearly in much better physical shape than on his first try where he trailed the field by a distance. He still looked short of ideal racing weight and though competing well, will need more time to physically progress and be able to offer his best effort. Ridden hard just inside the ½-mile pole, the big bay kept on well once past the two, finding only the first pair home to be too much in the end. He should benefit in a major way from this, and subsequent racing experiences should see him fully wound up and ready to win.

Comments:

They were only his first two runners of the day, but trainer Boston John got the best result with his charges taking the first two positions in an exhilarating finish. Mystic Moon broke on top and was fighting for her head early, but eventually gave into her rider’s intentions to sit just behind the leaders. She was asked to get on with it 600 meters out but was tight for room until faced with the final furlong. She bored her way in-between horses and got up at the death to grab glory from her pacesetting stable-mate. Runner-up Hawayan Tropic can be credited with perhaps the run of the race and was as game as ever in defeat. After a highly successful two and three year old campaign, she developed a dislike for leaving the starting gates and had a string of sound defeats. Sent away from competition for ten months, she returned here with a glimpse of her former self, just failing to hold off the winner after setting an honest pace. It was a game run from the chestnut mare who enjoyed the more enterprising tactics, responding well when her rider got busy a furlong and a half out. Hot favorite Bramstoker was understandably well-supported in light of back to back successes at the distance and against similar opposition. The colt probably lost a winning chance when asked a bit too early for his finishing kick, but was more likely just unable to shoot away from the first two on the day. Hawayan Tropic drifting back toward the rail turning for home opened a seam for the winner to power through, a development that possibly also altered his finishing position. None of the others featured in the final quarter mile with only Gudfridie having a say at any point in the race. He was again lightly weighted and was in with a chance until backing out at the top of the stretch. The gelding was eased down once fourth place was assured, unable to reel back in the leaders who were sprinting away from him. This is now his fourth start since returning (most of which were this against this calibre of horses) and he seems now to need a drop in company in order to win soon.

Comments:

2007 Gold Cup winner PURE TEMPTATION returned to winning form with this workmanlike defeat of five others in a lackluster handicap. It was by no means a stellar field nor was it a stirring finish, but fine it was to see the handsome bay winning again, his first since June last year. The five year old has been campaigning in the shadows of his younger stablemates namely Daylight Express and Bouncebak, but with both absent today he obliged with this win for Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing. Interestingly enough, this comes just two weeks before he is scheduled to defend his Val Gale Cup crown, the same race that was his last win prior to this; and he did it with 130lbs and 1¾ lengths to spare on the nearest challenger. The other story coming out of this is that his trainer’s hand is now strengthened even further with his return as the upcoming stakes races for higher rated horses draw nearer. Lethal Liesel started as favorite on the basis of her solid form of recent. She was gaining on the winner, but allowing Pure Temptation the first run gave her too much to do in the end. Kingdora set off at a strong pace and did his job well until outstayed by the first two. Zoom was stepping up in class against these, but the distance (shorter than his ideal) didn’t do him justice, and he never got on terms once the pace quickened.

Comments:

Trainer, groom and broodmare can be credited with opening the day’s racing with SUMMER STAR, then making a point by closing the day’s programme with a scorching run from RATATAT. The powerfully-built chestnut made the opposition look more ordinary than they are by finding plenty in a hurry, and virtually bolted up with the top impost of 131lbs. The four year old son of Boristenes broke from the widest berth and quickly had the field covered from the front, with only his stable-companion Tom Cat offering a minor challenge to his total dominance of the race. In the end he was much the best and the official margin of victory did little to justify the ease of the win, considering that jockey Ward spent most of his time in the stretch looking around for threats that never came rather than fully riding out the gelding, as there was simply no need to. The win marked a rare double on the day for his dam Ratified an American-bred mare who in her hey-day was a Graded stakes winner in Jamaica. Her offspring today both recorded maiden wins of good promise and this one in particular is very encouraging as none of the obstacles that befell the winner, made a difference on the outcome except to perhaps prevent an even more spectacular display. It also capped off a satisfying day for trainer Nunes who scored a treble of wins, two seconds and two thirds on the day. Charleston still searches menacingly for his first win and again met with at least one going better than he was in the end. Badly outpaced from the off, he settled into stride after a couple of furlongs and saved valuable ground closest to the rail. He sustained a strong run to the finish but was never a threat to the winner who was by then already free-wheeling and safely home. Also among those scrambling for the scraps was eventual third Why Not Dance. He was held up in last place early on, and took the widest route in the field, finishing strongly but almost under the stand rail to just pip Surreal and force her into fourth. Surreal raced along behind a wall of horses and found room only when the speed began taking its toll on most of those ahead of her. She swung into the stretch with a chance but simply lacked the acceleration to get any closer, just under three lengths adrift of the convincing winner who’s clearly a notch above these.
