Comments:

The first contest under a newly implemented handicapping system turned out to be a mostly one-sided affair with the three year old filly CHARLIE’S ANGEL making all of the running to score her second career win. She was allowed to lead at a pedestrian pace then stepped it up a notch going by the three, but only just enough to keep them at bay. Coming under serious pressure from Sweet Harmony for the run home, the chestnut responded to vigorous urgings from jockey Andy Ward to score rather cheekily in the end. Sweet Harmony was the fancied choice in the betting but again could only play second fiddle to a better horse on the day. She was always close to the pace and in hand, but found the winner too stubborn at the end of the 9-furlong journey. Wild Memories missed the break completely and gave the field a head-start of at least 10 lengths from the gate. The unhurried gallop allowed her to catch up after four furlongs were covered, but still seeing the entire field. Not an unfamiliar place for her to be, she crept up along the inside going to the three, switched lanes to the outside and had enough in the end to just miss by a neck for second place. Joint pre-race favorite Charleston was the pick of the parade ring but certainly ran well below expectations, though beaten only a bit more than two lengths at the finish. On the heels of the leader for a long way through the passive gallop, he failed to pull out sufficient in order to make a greater impression on the result. A renowned “one-pacer”, Tom Dooley plodded along just to the outside of the pacesetter and finished with little flair, having not quickened when asked to do so.

Unknown or generally poor form comprised the field for this maiden condition race over 5½ furlongs. Not surprisingly, it fell to the most exposed campaigner of the bunch ERADOS, who used every bit of his ability to capitalize on the opportunity. Blinkered again today, he was up close and towards the inside until blocked for room after he tendered a bid for the lead two furlongs out. The colt finally saw daylight between horses turning for home, and obliged in a head-bob finish with second-time starter Charletanne. The runner-up had an easy time until they cleared the hill and on the way to the two. She came under increasing pressure from Queendora and the winner, but ran like a deserving joint favourite as she kept it together for the final panel only to be unlucky in the photo-finish. Queendora was among those tasting competition for the first time. The full-sister to top sprinter Kingdora used the first furlong to find her stride but settled into a good rhythm on the flank of the leader once she did. She tried hard while running 3-wide but was unable to head the first two when it mattered, and should come on quite a bit from this run; perhaps more likely to excel as she stretches out a little further. Another debutante and one with equally big hooves to fill was Lancelot. He’s a ½ brother to another brilliant sprinter in Hot Shot and his career is likely to be closely monitored. Sent out for his first run he raced comfortably closely tracking the leading group, but was eased down in the last ½ furlong when it was clear that he wasn’t going on to make a difference; still an encouraging first run.

With his strong finishing kick, four year old colt BRAMSTOKER underscored his return to winning form and simultaneously reaffirmed the point of his $5,000 purchase price as an obvious bargain. Campaigning again at his ideal trip of 7.8 furlongs and benefitting from another patient ride, the Jonathan Simpson-trained animal justified his short-priced odds in a driving finish with Eye Of The Tiger to record his second consecutive strike. This win was undeniably more challenging than his last, and it underlined his toughness as he out-dueled Eye Of The Tiger in deep stretch despite being steered away from the inside rail that he clearly favours. The winner then survived an objection for interference warranted by a brief mid-stretch bobble that caused the second-place finisher to alter course slightly. Eye Of The Tiger was disappointing in his last two starts and this effort represented his first positive run since a game effort in the Tanglewood Stakes. He sat willingly behind the leaders but stayed tough throughout. Turning for the judge and handed the full treatment, the son of Thady Quill was clearly under duress to get past the stubborn winner and failed in his bid by neck. Third place finisher Kanon was as usual beaten for pace and pushed along at the rear. She missed the kick four furlongs out, but held the rail and saved considerable ground. She was tight for room in deep stretch but that hardly prevented her from a higher place. Pacemaker Gudfridie set off at a comfortable rhythm initially, but markedly increased the tempo going by the four when attempting to prevent a two-furlong sprint to the finish. The plan didn’t work accordingly as he was easily covered by the more precise turn of foot of the winner and runner-up. Nonetheless this run suggests that he could find winning form soon. Aisling, badly hampered last time out, was thought to go close here, but those aspirations were perhaps thrashed when she was up to push the pace rather freely and early in the contest. Halfway through, she didn’t seem quite at home after over the shorter trip, having to amplify her gait even more after the early exertion.

Favourite SOCA QUEEN rewarded her many backers with a useful performance to score her maiden victory here. The win was the second of three on the day for her rider and two short of an eventual beaver-trick for trainer Robert Peirce. Sitting in a box-seat just behind a brisk pace, jockey Anderson Ward made his move for the lead once the warm gallop upfront progressively diminished to a smoldering flame. The chestnut cruised clear of the already beaten foes, and though running a bit green it still proved a daunting task for anyone to catch her. Que Pasa ran another useful race though never a real danger to the winner. Racing much closer on this occasion positioned her for a more effective effort, yet she’ll need to reproduce this run after waiting at least another fortnight for a similarly poor maiden if she’s to finally score. Soul Music just bettered Lady Patrick for third money, but both were ever in a position to land a serious blow.

As expected, the top-rated three year old in this condition race SHOW ME THE MONEY, offered onlookers a genuine display of dominance with this seamless transition from “maiden” to “awesome winner”. With Ward aboard and virtually motionless throughout the 1,570 metres, the son of Kit Fisto recorded a stylish trouncing of the bunch with none of his eight fatalities ever in a position to defend themselves against his breathtaking demonstration. Sent to the front from the off, the striking chestnut colt’s pillar to post victory joins a mere handful of performances seen at the Garrison, in which the winner was visibly untested, a point magnified by the jockey’s incredibly relaxed posture. The colt was head and shoulders above the field on form and physique, running like one would expect a raging hot favourite to, dominating the field in a style resembling a little more than a morning workout. Through the race conditions, he was afforded 7lbs less as a maiden running against winners, but that would’ve undoubtedly made little difference to the result since the muscle-bound chestnut was never extended yet held the call throughout. Even though those in the blood bath behind him were of little merit, he still deserves praise for what can sometimes be an elusive first win. Tears Of The Sun was always second best and though beaten just 2¼ lengths, the facile nature of the winners performance, and knowing that he could’ve gone much faster than the 1:36.8 he posted, underlines his inferiority to the victor. Nonetheless, the diminutive chestnut could soon find himself in winner’s row, if raced next against his equals. Batista was full of himself in the preliminaries and looked a safe place bet, but competing for the win against SHOW ME THE MONEY was always a monumental task even if he wasn’t asked to concede 7lbs to him as he did today. With this win finally under his belt, and his confidence hitting a high note, SHOW ME THE MONEY has rubber-stamped his claims of a legitimate shot in the Midsummer Classic scheduled for July 4^th.

This handicap was a competitive sprint for all except the convincing winner, who was easily a notch above the rest. Well positioned along the rail throughout, SUPER STAR darted away from a decent bunch of sprinters to triumph handsomely under a hand ride. The Edward Walcott trainee won with something in hand, and his win was a pleasing sight as it was his first since 2006 when he won the rich Elliot Williams Juvenile Stakes. Sidelined in early 2007, the compact bay was gelded and given just over two years off, with this being just his third try since returning, clearly showing signs that he’s recaptured his best juvenile form. Just U And Me also found familiar form staying on well after being pushed along well adrift of the leading batch. Though not applying his customary finishing kick, he kept up the gallop in the final stages and crept past weary foes for second; finally a desirable run from the old stager. Bold Ballad was again consistent at the distance, running another big race for third, albeit 3¾ lengths behind the winner. She was on top leaving the gate, but relinquished the advantage to an easier-running SUPER STAR. She attempted to reclaim superiority approaching the 2f pole, but her acceleration was second-rate to the winner’s, who by then had it won. Fully Loaded was shockingly snagged back to last leaving the starting stalls, and lost critical ground in the process. A furlong and a half from the money she was still last and behind a wall of horses. Finding a space didn’t come easy but she eventually altered course to the outside for the finish, covering all but the first three in the end.

It was another good renewal for the 2009 edition of the OBS Company Trophy with no fewer than six of the nine entries capable of lifting the valuable first prize. With the exception of Grace Chapel and Tenpins Dancer, it seemed to be a fair and true contest, with another Robert Peirce protégé adding to his stable’s already impressive stakes race collection. Andy Ward’s and Words Of The Wise’s intentions of stealing another of the day’s races from in front, was thwarted by his stable companion PEACEFUL ENVOY and Richard Lunan, who was clearly out to make a point of Ward’s default on this latter mount. Tucked in along the rail, PEACEFUL ENVOY was comfortably in hand and tracked three lengths behind his stable-companion pacesetter. He was sent after the leader passing the three, and readily quickened to lead just inside the two. The win was then firmly in hand except for mild pressure in deep stretch from Bloumberg. This win is now his third in the last five starts and it echoes loud hints of his improvement in recent times. Bloumberg was returning to campaigning against his contemporaries after venturing briefly against open company. One could perhaps attribute his defeat here to conceding first run to the winner once into the hill. A good effort again nonetheless, and he should continue steadily improving to a higher level if campaigned suitably. Words Of The Wise set a good pace and stretched his rivals going over the hill. He found nothing once off the bridle and then laboured his way to the finish after drifting when under pressure away from the inside rail. A plausible excuse would be that he would’ve preferred going on the softer side of good, but perhaps another reason may be his …effectiveness at distances farther than 7 furlongs. His running style implies that he is probably more at home right now between 6-7 furlongs. The improving Grace Chapel entered with a decent shot at the first prize, but lost considerable ground going around the “paddock bend”. The winner’s triumph here marked four on the day for his trainer, who continues to get good results from his growing stable. He adds another good horse in PEACEFUL ENVOY - who is clearly going places - to his embarrassment of riches, and must have his sight set squarely on the 2009 Trainer’s Championship as the ultimate goal.

Dropping back to the local “mile” distance of 7.8 furlongs, the Boston John-trained LETHAL LIESEL again found herself well clear of her rivals at the end, scoring a stylish victory over this capable group of individuals. Just over a year ago, the precocious American-bred resembled more of a 5 furlong sprinter who’d have to be fully stretched to get a mile. Yet today she willingly cantered along behind the pace, then unleashed a devastating blow at the two that soon had everything in trouble, effectively maiming the opposition. The race was set up for a sprint through a decent pace set by the highly favoured Wash Brook – an easy winner over 10f last time out. Though easily accounted for by the winner, he stuck to his task well and even attempted a rally in mid-stretch, but the winner sealed his fate and assured the outcome with a second quickening. Tiga Lily stayed off the heat early and though finishing well, ran past mostly beaten horses as the first two were already out of reach. Spicey Tiger raced wide for the last five furlongs, and was eased down when clearly beaten. The winner’s time was a very good 1:34.8, faster than anything else on the day for the trip, thanks to a searching gallop in the final two furlongs.
