Analysis:

A host of newcomers lined up for what was the most heavily subscribed race for two year olds thus far. The result however would be a familiar one, with the Lord Michael Taylor-Clifton Racing-Robert Peirce team dominating the event with their two forward juveniles. Leading two year old SPELLBOUND returned another smart performance and in the process turned the tables on her only previous conqueror Rush Cutter. The connections have now won and dominated all but one of the juvenile races so far, and have further separated themselves from the competition in this division. The winner was quite composed beforehand and ran on a relatively easy winner, but still appears to have more of a sprinting aptitude at least for now. The attractive daughter of Captain Charlie defied the odds which were more in favour of her stable-mate Rush Cutter, and held that colt at bay in the final furlong. Even-money favourite Rush Cutter had not been seen out since trouncing the winner back in July. He ran a decent enough race considering that fact, and should be a better horse next season. There was a large margin before the next one home, confirming the dominance of the first two over the rest. That one was Mocca, a well-grown colt who'll need the six-week off season to get it right. He showed good speed from the gate but did little in the final half of the race, finishing well off the winner who has so far racked up an impressive record with three wins and one second from four starts.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Unlike the unfavourable track they encountered in their first meeting, the imported Two Year Olds found more suitable underfoot conditions for their re-appearance, this time at 1100 metres. It resulted in a fairer contest for the bunch, but the winner INDANGER was able to produce a somewhat similar effort as on that occasion to score nicely. He was more pleasing to the eye in the preliminaries as well, and looks to still have some room for further improvement. Mingun Temple showed lots more verve today, and got into the thick of things much earlier as well. The handsome colt found plenty when the chips were down, and he takes the shape of a horse with considerable promise. A solid pedigree to boot should see him developing into a very nice individual. Reward Me couldn’t be fairly assessed before this after losing his rider and chances with a stumble last time out. He was on the business end of things early as well, but lacked the turn of foot to go with the first two in the final quarter mile, and evened out. Dany Dany also showed slight improvement on the firmer footing, and was again willing. He seems to lack a significant change of pace for these shorter trips, and should perhaps be more effective over further.   [ROG]

Analysis:

It must be disappointing for the connections of KANON that the season must now come to a close. The five year old mare has hit outstanding form and now boasts a hat-trick of wins, with this one coming at a distance at which she had to this point been unsuccessful. Even the lack of early pace which saw her being worked hard on to keep up initially, was ultimately ineffective at thwarting her chances; and evidence of her toughness was again realized when she once more fought off the younger Batista for at least a furlong for the win. Batista found himself on the front end early as no one (except Uncle Jerry who tried to slow it too much) was too keen on seeing daylight that early. He found a turn of foot when needed but again seemed to be loafing a bit just prior to being engaged by the winner. Once joined by the winner the colt hung left but found plenty, and forced an almost identical result to their last encounter. Uncle Jerry showed that he may’ve been more of a factor in the finish had he been allowed to dictate an even slower gallop. The gelding was short of pace when losing a gap to the winner, but then gained steadily on the top pair in deep stretch.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Not a field with much form but the result produced a very good performance by the Edward Walcott trainee LIGHTNING BOLT. The chestnut gelding didn’t find the winning post first time out to continue his trainer’s recent good fortunes with debutantes and returnees, but did the business a start later with this decisive win. He was much the best in the end, but still had to sustain a worthy inquiry for interference about a quarter-mile out. Runner-up Ned Kelly didn’t have the best of trips on his debut a fortnight ago over 1000 metres, and found the additional ground today more to his liking. Que Pasa was well off the pace as usual and gave herself much to do. This coupled with traffic problems at a most critical stage, put paid to her chances of finally graduating from the maiden ranks. Quality Time was knocked right out of it at the start, and did well to recover enough from so far out of it to still earn a cheque, albeit just barely.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Benefitting from weight concessions all around and an enterprising ride by apprentice Jalon Samuel, five year old mare WALK ON BY turned what appeared to be a competitive event on paper, into an almost solo show of determination. The chestnut made the most of her light impost and delivered a performance reminiscent of her better days. The punter’s fancy Preach To Me was all out to peg the winner back, but had his momentum broken slightly when making a run, and this along with the 20lbs he gave her surely sealed his fate. John Brian (not surprisingly) looked beaten as far as a furlong out in this his first start since the Gold Cup in March. He was the high-weight in the field, and though beaten an increasing four lengths in the end, should be on target for bigger efforts next season. As the only three year old in the group, it was pleasing to see Bloumberg in the money against these older, tougher campaigners. He was perhaps not given the best chance having been squeezed out a bit after two furlongs, then found himself wide and fighting a futile battle to quicken up.   [ROG]

Analysis:

Talented apprentice Jalon Samuel again stole the spotlight with similar tactics for the same connections, with another confident ride on DEAL OR NODEAL. The filly made most of the running and ensured a rare double for her deceased dam as she’s the younger ½ sister to Walk On By.  The four year old was noticeably tiring close home, but had done enough to see off the opposition. It was also a memorable double for the owner/trainer Joseph brothers’ team who are likely still riding high on the success of their Triple Crown winner Areutalkintome. Soca Queen has found improved form with this repeat runner-up effort. She lacked racing room just clear of the hill and it’s not unreasonable to think that she may’ve troubled the winner had she got out sooner. Gin For Me is another who suffered painfully at the hands of bad luck. She found herself quite farther back than usual, and then had her progress hindered until too late to allow her any higher in the ranks. The effort itself was still somewhat genuine as she was able to conjure up her customary change of pace once seeing daylight.   [ROG]

Analysis:

This division “B” of the previous handicap proved to be much more competitive and went for the photo-finish camera to decide. In the end the Naz Issa-trained HEZBOLLAH was shown to have just prevailed, after making almost all of the running. The result and the horse’s showing were more in sync with what was expected last time out when he came home a dismal last over a trip he so impressively won at just eleven days prior. It’s true the field on this occasion is not as tough, and the strongly-built bay made this one count with a big effort to score. Runner-up Randy Andy who was having his first start since changing hands, was bearing in badly close home after looking hopeless about two furlongs out. A tongue-tie was included for him today, but it’s uncertain how much this contributed to helping his chances. Athena is another to have changed hands recently, and followed up her last run a couple of week ago, with another good one. She was highly fancied in the betting and ran a satisfying race, an effort that would’ve given her the win on another day.   [ROG]

Analysis:

After many agonizing months of repeated defeats, MOONSTONE finally finds the winner’s enclosure again. He’d been adding some pretty disappointing efforts to his now unenviable resumé, and it took a drop to this poorest of company and the addition of cheek pieces to get the four year old gelding home. Having now scraped the bottom of the barrel for this score, it’s sad that he must now wait at least six weeks before it can be determined if he’s now ready to win more often. Espiritu who is now handled by a small syndicate and trainer Fitz Gittens, has hardened up physically for her new connections and has been showing a slight improvement in form. She did receive lumps of weight and a beating from the winner, suggesting that her place in this company may be accurate and finally the maiden win could be close. Hypa Cat’s form has been so indifferent recently that it’s not clear if this run is as genuine as it may look. A lot could change for her in six weeks, but it’s more likely that she’s simply past her best and much shouldn’t be expected - we’ll just have to wait and see.     [ROG]

Analysis:

The final handicap of the season would turn out to be another fairly competitive one with the first six horses finishing within 3½ lengths of the progressive winner SWEET ENOUGH. The three year old filly chalked up her sixth career win (and second consecutive) against the older horses. The light-framed filly made all of the running despite being sacked with the top weight as the highest rated horse in the field. The time off should suit her well too as she’s had a long arduous year so far, and hopefully she’d continue such form into the next term. Time Do’r seldom runs a bad race, and perhaps had his win stolen by a much better horse today, while the improving St. Nicholas Bay confirmed the form of his surprise win last time out with another good showing. The three year old chestnut seems to be well over his problems now, and had he been able to shake free of traffic sooner, could’ve notched a third for his connections. Barring a few exceptions, it was a nicely contested event and a fitting end to the season’s racing.   [ROG]
