Analysis:
The babies were again first up and six were sent to post for their initial trial at 7.8 furlongs. It was a tidy enough little contest, up until a furlong out when the winner ISLAND LAD was checked hard and was almost brought down by the wayward tactics of newcomer Leave It To Me. Sent off as the even-money favourite, ISLAND LAD has been crying out for the extra ground, and justified that promise with a gritty effort to just nip the pacemaker in the final stride. He demonstrated significant courage to regain composure after the interference, and that makes this a performance to note for when such determination is necessary as the competition gets keener. Habibti was a bit rank early and set out to make all the running. She somewhat assisted the winner’s cause by drifting away from the inside rail turning for home, but was soon under pressure to find more and was eventually worn down by that horse. Leave It To Me was the best of the newcomers despite running a little green towards the end. As a full sister to the notable gallopers Don Anglesonny and Don Portalsonny, she has some big hooves to fill, and got off to a reasonable start with this encouraging debut. She was quite a handful in the preliminaries though, having fought herself free of the handler on two occasions and “warmed up” with a full-lap canter of the training track. This was followed by a couple of falls, all before even reaching the starting gates. Nonetheless she’s one to watch over a similar trip next time out should the expected improvement hold true. As the first foal of a Derby winner, fellow debutant Calypso Queen too has a fashionable pedigree to live up to. The inexperience was apparent at first, but she finally got more serious down the lane and finished well. The Boston John-trained juvenile is obviously a horse with some potential but still needs time. [ROG]

Analysis:
A good return to form for VANDROSS who was again tackling the distance of his biggest win, the Diamonds Int’l A/P Stakes which he won as a two year old. He did run some creditable races over the longer trips, but never appeared fully at home there. The gelding will certainly not receive any favours from the handicappers from this run, but should still be competitive if again campaigned in this company at a similar trip. Tiga Lily had not done anything as significant as this in a long time, perhaps because she too was stretched over less likeable distances. She normally tries hard wherever placed, and deserves another win which could come soon if raced appropriately. Words Of The Wise was a little disappointing after turning in a huge effort last time out. He looked comfortable up until asked to pick it up by Crawford when clearing the hill, and came home a well-beaten favourite. Nonetheless he continues to be a good servant having found himself in the money for the eleventh time in fourteen starts with this third. [ROG]

Analysis:
After a disappointing run in the Derby a month ago, the Edward Walcott-trained ERADOS returned to winning form with this gutsy win over the older horses. The son of Thady Quill was fairly evenly placed in the handicap and handed out a beating to albeit an average-looking field. He did well though to quicken at the end of a pace that was only steady, helped by the fact that the pacesetter and those pressing him did not pick it up significantly when the race was on. It was still a good effort on his part as he may have another big race entry in the near future. Runner-up Proud Bajan was thought to be a sure bet here on the heels of a couple good efforts recently. He too found plenty in the final two furlongs, but a tougher rival awaited him in the last panel. Batista normally enjoys a fight and was blinkered today hoping to keep him focused when it matters most. He ran another good race here, but perhaps hit the front too soon. Just Jiving finished closer than he has been for quite some time now, but still didn’t impress much with his effort, failing to find a change of pace in the final quarter mile to make a difference. Bram Stoker doesn’t appear genuine at the trip, and was set an even tougher task by racing away from the rail for most of the way, tiring in the dying stages and being eased when winning was unlikely. Analysis:
Raging favorurite BLOUMBERG successfully shortened to the 1100 metres trip with a good-looking score over a lightly campaigned field of seven. The colt has been running in tougher company and over longer distances prior to this, and his 4-length trouncing of these came as little surprise to most. His Spa Sprint stakes effort alone was enough to predict this result, and it’s left to be seen now in which direction his career is pointed. He seemed to be shying a bit from the whip, somewhat surprising for his level of experience. The win also marked a double for jockey Bishop who’s been riding with heightened confidence in recent times. Grenadilla looked well beforehand despite being out of competition since January 31st. His willing effort was limited only by a lack of acceleration, as the handsome colt obviously needs further to be most effective. Cash Boy donned cheek pieces again today, and was poised for a big run when racing at the flanks of the winner. He uncharacteristically hung out turning for home and that quickly put paid to any chance he had of winning. [ROG]

Analysis:
This result speaks well for the form of this year’s three year old crop. Never mind the winner may’ve not been given the best chance in the Derby, his efforts previous to that were consistently of a high standard and this win is more in line with those. DON PORTALSONNY willingly saw off a gutsy Walk On By and Derby runner-up Show Me The Money to increase his tally to four wins. In winning he also dismissed the in-form imported Bird Watch, who’d racked up an impressive double in his two starts prior to this one. The only spoiler really was that he was a bit difficult to load on this occasion, but made up for it in the race when pressed by Crawford, for whom he is particularly effective. Walk On By appears to be close to her better form and was just outstayed by a younger, tougher colt. Show Me The Money was rank in the early going, but still gave a fairly genuine effort despite having the tables turned on him by the winner. Hopefully these two three year olds can continue their good showing in the upcoming Breeders’ Classic in a couple of months, when they’ll be put to the test by a stellar bunch of older creoles. *NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO RACE #7
Analysis:
A roughly run race with very few horses having a fair chance by being offered an unimpeded run. FAR-TOGO showed considerable improvement to just get home, but not before he took the ground of the eventual third place finisher Soul Rebel. The winner is a reject from the powerhouse stable of Lord Michael Taylor, with two previous runs under his girth. He was still running green well inside the final furlong, but was good enough to hold on. Last Dream ran a similar blinder in this company two starts ago, and looks to be happier (at least for now) at this shorter trip. He does his best running towards the end, and with better luck should claim a win soon. In desperate search of racing room, Soul Rebel hampered the progress of the hard-charging runner-up slightly in deep stretch, and could never find sufficient daylight for a true run. On The Run was not given a breather by apprentice Latchman, and though saving ground on the rail throughout could never really get on terms with the leaders. [ROG]

Analysis:
Quite a spectacular effort from FIRE HILL who ensured a second consecutive win with this stylish, run away triumph. She’s by no means a big filly, but certainly appears to have a big heart on the basis of these last two runs. With one circuit to travel she was about twelve lengths off the lead, and heading the second group who appeared to be in a separate race. That she would turn it in to an apparent one-horse race for the final furlong can only be attributed to a spectacular turn of foot and a determined winner, who looked to have thoroughly enjoyed herself. Soca Queen set out to make the running and was more eager than in her last three starts. She’s certainly capable of it as seen when breaking her maiden in May, but the winner’s finishing kick was too lethal on this occasion. Who’s Calling deserves some credit still, as she gave the first and second, ten and seven pounds respectively. Outside of that it was maybe just an average run for her, but she could be a factor next time out in similar company. Aisling looked badly beaten two furlongs out, but tiring horses ahead made it easy for her to claim the fourth spot with a strong final furlong run. She was still well-beaten, but could claim the scalps of a poorer bunch if tackled next time out. [ROG]

*NO WINNERS CARRIED TO THE
NEXT RACEDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2009
Analysis:
A fairly textbook result with the abundance of speed burning up and giving way to the closers, who took three of the four major spots. At the furlong pole it looked like anyone’s race with eight of them stretched across the track. The winner ST. NICHOLAS BAY is obviously a talented fellow, but his upward mobility was hindered by throat problems. Since that operation he’s been in pretty decent form and perhaps now can realize his true potential. Inherit The Wind has been hunting for another win for quite some time. The gelding again came close today, but he always finds himself behind at least one other at the finish. Storm Warning was the only horse directly involved in the punishing pace to be around at the finish. She’s normally more effective when allowed to have things her own way, but continued nicely in the final furlong only beaten by the fierce closing kick of the first two. Athena was quite unfortunate to not finish closer. She’d been short of racing room for most of the critical final two furlongs, in fact the jockey was only able to ask for an effort (albeit only a passive one) under a furlong out. She recently changed hands and has improved at least physically since the transition – definitely one to watch. [ROG] |
