Analysis:
This was a fairly interesting maiden with couple of promising/or potentially useful types occupying the first three spots. It was a perfect start to racing for PRINCE OF GROVES, as he made light work of a full field over five and a half furlongs. Despite looking a little green down the lane when not changing leads until late, the colt had already done enough from the gate to stretch his foes and won with something in hand. That he would run in the fashion he did should've been fairly predictable considering virtually his entire immediate family have displayed similar attributes, in particular early in their careers. His under-utilized sire was equally sharp from the boxes and though not having many runners, has an enviable record as most have won and shared the same brilliant acceleration. To the winner's credit, the final time was identical to that of the high-class Purr Class two races ago (after quicker splits), which is further indicative of his ability. He settled on the front end quite kindly and may even stay on a bit further than his relatives. Tornade was having his first run after failing to load the gates last time out. The handsome colt was gaining slowly in the final furlong but clearly lacked the early speed to be comfortable in the pace, having to be pushed along throughout to stay within a striking position. He's a big, "scopey-looking" individual and was full of himself after the contest. Clearly the Boston John trainee should be quite effective over further, especially if he settles enough to be more level-headed when being loaded into the gates. Local Speed returned here after showing good form last time over 7.8 furlongs. He's undoubtedly more suitable over that trip but was still quite willing here despite being slightly beaten for pace early on, and is likely to break his maiden soon. [ROG]

Analysis:
Quite a stylish effort by recent import ROCAMADOUR to land his maiden over nine furlongs. Having been beaten into fourth in his two most recent outings at the trip, the son of Black Mambo returned here and looked quite commanding when willingly stepping up the tempo four furlongs from home. He obviously enjoys a distance of ground, but still has enough pace to handle a shorter journey. Not a very exposed individual, the good-looking bay still needs to improve significantly this year in order to effectively handle himself in the big races for which he's eligible. Runner-up Samsamsam was also having his fourth start, and is continuing to improve with each one. The five year old still looked strong towards the end, and could be in line for a win next time out. Conversely, Proud Bajan continues struggling to find a win, with even the services of a leading international jockey and a drop in company not enough to help him graduate from the maiden ranks. Analysis:
Last year's leading three year olds were called to post for the year's first major test for older horses over ten furlongs. Now in its third year, the contest is proving to be a big target for late maturing three year olds of the previous year as a prep for the Tanglewood Stakes on the first Saturday in March. This year's race provided another exciting result as Derby runner-up SHOW ME THE MONEY enterprisingly turned the tables on his nemesis and posted a new stakes record in the process. On the basis of this and his previous run he looks a vastly improved horse. The Robert Peirce-trained colt took the race to the Champion who, played right into his hands when jockey Rickey Walcott won the battle to temper his usual early aggression. The winner free-wheeled on the front end uncontested for most of the final mile in the event, and found plenty to deny the runner-up from whom he was receiving 7lbs. Areutalkintome wasn't disgraced in defeat, but surely his fan-club would've preferred to see their colt clench his ninth consecutive victory. Many have questioned the decision to run here knowing the weight conditions wouldn't have been in the Champion's favour; but one plausible explanation could be that since the Coolmore Stakes next week was not an option, it would've been too large a gap between his last start on Boxing Day and his next on Gold Cup day for a horse who's difficult to restrain even when he's not fresh. Perhaps he would've been more at home staring the winner in the eye throughout and ensuring a true test; unfortunately it's too late for "what if's" and we'll need to wait for the pair to meet again on even terms. Take nothing from the winner though, he was impressive nonetheless and still looks in fine fettle for when the stakes are raised next time out. Another huge run in the race came from last year's Turf Stakes third Golden Moon, who had not faced the starter in just shy of the twelve months preceding this. The five year old was full of run down the lane but came up short, though gaining on the runner-up in the last few strides. Provided he stays sound between now and then, he'll again make his presence felt on Gold Cup day. [ROG]

Analysis:
Make it two straight stylish wins for SOCA QUEEN as the four year old streaked to another exciting score for her connections. She daughter of Thady Quill found plenty in a hurry when pressed, having been allowed an unobstructed passage along the rail to the fore. She willingly took the advantage before they reached the turn, and only needed to be punched out to assure another decisive win. Her final time was a pretty decent one too, further emphasizing the change of form the attractive filly has found. Enough can't be said of the consistency of the runner-up Double Dagger who seems to redefine the term "honest" when describing his form. The four year old continues to try hard and this characteristic has landed him in the money nine of the eleven times he's been tried. Again his lack of a sharp turn of foot (coupled with a 9lb weight concession) has caused him the win, as he failed to pick himself quickly enough to snatch the same seam the winner took to victory. In taking second place the colt still afforded his owners a favourable 1-2 finish, and what better time to do it than when they're actually on the island to enjoy the result. Inherit The Wind has also found some decent form recently, winning his last two races - albeit over shorter. He also gave the winner weight (12lbs) a fact that certainly helps to soften the blow of defeat. [ROG]

Analysis:
Diminutive three year old filly LEAVE IT TO ME convincingly secured her place (at least for the time being) at the helm of her division with another gutsy win over her counterparts. It was not a full field this time, but contained most of the best so far in a group that is merely a few months away from their Classic campaign. The winner wasn't as brilliant as her last outing when slamming similar over the identical trip, but looked a tough customer when successfully slugging it out in the stretch with a promising colt and two others of the opposite sex left in her wake. It took a little longer for her to assert, but she found that brilliant turn of foot when needed to catapult herself to the head of affairs. The runner-up was as game as ever, and was perhaps displaying an equally deadly change of pace in order to make the winner's finishing kick seem inadequate at one point. He found a higher gear when committed by jockey Ward, then willingly picked up again when joined about a furlong out with the jockey then even harder at work. With Rush Cutter short of his best and Island Lad finding one or two ahead of each each time, the son of Captain Charlie seems to be his powerful stable's best chance of lifting a 3YO Classic in 2010, and better should be expected. Island Lad's effort today was certainly more favourable than the poor form he showed when beaten into third by lesser group on opening day. It's uncertain to what extent he would've troubled the first two, but it's not unreasonable to suggest that it may've been significant had he not refused to alter course towards the outside of the winner throughout the final panel. He may be a bit of a rogue, but could still spring a surprise in a major contest this year. The others were pretty well strung out behind these first three with only Amanyara and Rush Cutter ever being in serious contention. Amanyara did race a bit waywardly at the famed "Paddock Bend", but that hardly put paid to her chances as she may be simply out of her league with these when venturing farther than 1100m. Mocca missed the break completely and was never able to get within a striking position; surprising for a horse that is normally flawless with that part of his job as shown in his few starts before when sprinting. Rush Cutter did the same uncharacteristic maneuver as Amanyara, and though still in contention thereafter, was definitely not the same horse that dominated most of the juvenile events last year. Rumors surfaced that sore shins or another problem "down below" may've been responsible for his untidy performance, but either way he now has worthy opposition with which to contend. [ROG]

*NO WINNERS CARRIED OVER TO THE
NEXT RACEDAY JANUARY 30, 2010
Analysis:
Another stellar performance by the Edward Walcott trainee SUPER STAR who turned in a career-best effort to land this one. It was by no means as valuable a prize as his highlight as a juvenile, but the son of Super Jeblar fairly scorched the track and his six other high-quality rivals en-route to a historic win. Not only did he trounce the opposition, but he also established a new track record for the popular five and a half furlongs trip, becoming one of a selected few to post a sub_1:04 time. The win was his second successive after a 6-length score on Boxing Day in a similar fashion, and he seems pose a serious threat to all comers in the upcoming Spa Sprint Stakes. Time D'or also fell victim to the winner on this occasion after feeling his wrath last start. Both efforts deserve loads of credit, for despite being soundly beaten he still accounted for some important scalps in the process. Sprint Champion Kingdora's effort is also worthy of praise when considering that he was not seen out in almost three months. Add to that the 133lbs he carried, and weight concessions ranging from 9 to 23lbs and one can clearly see why he's ruled the roost for this long. Not known to fancy the rider's whip much, he responded surprisingly well along the rail only after jockey Ward handed out the full treatment. That said he'll have quite a bit to say in the outcome of the Gold Cup day sprint. [ROG]
